Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Yes, I can legitimately deny that race had anything to do with the uproar. If you think that a white guy NEEDLESSLY giving the middle finger to a team that was BUILT around him, where EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE CONCESSION was given to him and his entourage would get a lesser reaction, then.....well, we clearly disagree. If Tom Brady had done what LBJ did, trust me, Boston would be just as hurt, sad, and angry as we are. Race, and racist accusations, have been factors in Lebron James career to some degree. When he was on the cover of Vogue roaring with some model, there was a lot of hoopla about it being racially insensitive. When he left and the useless Jesse Jackson started moaning about the Cavs trying to enslave LJB, we get another racist accusation though I'm not sure if Jesse's were all there with his commentary. Hts121, this race card thing has just got to stop. Just because an athlete is black and unpopular does not mean that race has one iota thing to do it, and your guarantee is both impossible to prove. Race race race race race race race. Why are we Americans so damn fixated on it.

Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
I disagree that the coverage has inflated the problem or make it seem like it's worse than it really is. These underage kids are obnoxious and rude to the point of their being harassment. The people in the clubs are okay. For example, I went to Fortress (I think that's the name) on Saturday. The first floor was mostly Latino and European dancing to salsa. The second floor was hiphop, maybe 90% black. I hung out in both parts with my girl and there were 0.0 tensions on both floors. We left and walked by St. Clair to W3 where I parked. Walking by a large parking lot of W6/st cl, we saw a large group of teens hanging out and yelling at passerbys. Not innocent catcalls, but truly ugly stuff. I think I was more pissed off at the parking attendant, and by extension owner, than these kids as clearly they were just tailgating and loitering without anyone telling them to leave. The kids were ugly enough to put a slight damper on the night. They have got to go

A lot more responsibility needs to go to the parking lot owners too. They're letting kids loiter, smoke up, harass passersby, and so on.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
This is an iterative process. It's doesn't happen overnight. It takes careful and deliberate modeling of both existing rail traffic and what happens were more trains are introduced. To suggest that someone was holding something back is absurd. For estimates to change from 37 mph to 61 mph between Cleveland to Columbus is a radical leap, and I don't think it's silly to question where the numbers came from and how realistic the new speeds are. I'm not saying the numbers are wrong (how the hell would I know anyway), but it's perfectly reasonable to want to learn more and even be somewhat skeptical about this project, which is now very different and far more attractive than just last week. That kind of leap is something else, and with elections on the horizon..... And considering how often Clevelanders, and I'm sure Ohioans in general, have so often received extremely flawed/fraudulent estimates for various projects (think Ameritrust building costs, Juvenile Justice Center costs, RTA line to the Flats and East 9th passenger estimates), it's certainly worth discussing.
-
Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
2 hours from to Clev to Columb sounds great, but I would like to hear a little more about how they came across these numbers, and why it's only now that we're getting reasonable time estimates between the 2 cities.

Favorite comics/comic characters
I've read some of Sgt. Rock stuff. Those war comics are always good reads. I forgot to mention All Star Superman and how brilliant a series that is. It did a really good job capturing the essence of old school comics (where things really weren't that serious i.e. Superman spanking Lois would be on the cover of every other issue). The art is great, there are multiple iconic images, in particular the cover of the first issue where Superman is sitting calmly on the clouds looking over Metropolis, and the storyline is very satisfying. An easy 10 out of 10. Not sure about the upcoming straight to DVD animated film. If it's just another Luthor vs Superman storyline, then they're missing the point of the series. You can see it here. http://www.411mania.com/movies/news/154460/%5BMovies%5D-Trailer-For-All-Star-Superman.htm And on an unrelated note, look at Chris Evans as Captain America here. He got JACKED. http://www.411mania.com/movies/news/154664/%5BMovies%5D-First-Look-At-Chris-Evans-&-Hayley-Atwell-In-Captain-America.htm

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Now punch....you're not that kind of poster. Come on now And I don't think my opinion of the euclid corridor project is important here. I'm just talking about what I perceive RTA taking undeserved credit for a number of major projects.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
I respectfully disagree, JMasek. Read this statement and tell me it doesn't sound RTA is taking responsibility for billions in development: "...the HealthLine is helping lead (okay, “drive”) the rebirth of Euclid Avenue. After all, this sleek bus rapid transit line isn’t just moving passengers from places like Public Square to University Circle in 20 minutes flat. It’s moving our economy toward numbers like $4.3 billion in economic development. Not to mention, making our city a little greener, thanks to hybrid technology and 1,500 new trees (no wonder that little bird is so happy). So hop on board. And see how the RTA HealthLine truly is pumping new life into Cleveland..." http://www.rtahealthline.com/healthline-what-is.asp

Cleveland: Mayor Frank Jackson
Has Mayor Jackson's office said anything about the recent arrests? I can't find anything online. Is he even remotely aware of what's happening and how angry/scared/embarrassed Clevelanders are about this corruption scandal? And it's not even corruption anymore - it's more like political terrorism! How can he not have a major press conference addressing these real concerns. Just acknowledge it for crying out loud!!!!!

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Adios Bill. Don't drop the soap. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2010/09/21/sources-bill-mason-expected-to-resign-soon-face-charges-from-feds Sources: Bill Mason Expected to Resign Soon, Face Charges From Feds "Cuyahoga County’s corruption scandal has touched almost every corner of county service except the Prosecutor’s Office. That will change in the coming weeks, according to sources with close ties to county politics. Mason is expected to resign by the second week of October, the sources say. Federal charges against him are expected within the next two months. “There’s a reason why they’re not included [in the federal indictments] at this point,” says one of the sources, who spoke with Scene on condition of anonymity. “They’re collecting more information.”"

Cleveland-random venting
This is one of Cleveland's most iconic places, yet it seems like it's been relegated to a ghost mall. I'm aware there are businesses there and a nice hotel attached, but the Arcade always seems completely empty when I walk inside. There really should be a massive birthday paid by the business community or city (just get it done!) so that people can be reintroduced to the Arcade and start appreciating it and its history. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ac_clevela/ac_clevela_ts3665#mwpphu-container The Old Arcade: a look at a national treasure, 120 years young " We should all look as good if (and when) we turn 120 years old, even if we don't have formal birthday parties anymore. The Old Arcade—one of the country's first shopping malls and the first of Northeast Ohio's skyscrapers—celebrated its 120th birthday this year. Now occupied by the Hyatt Regency Cleveland Hotel, the Old Arcade resides between Euclid and Superior Avenues downtown and was built in 1890 as one of the first indoor shopping malls in the United States."

No way the Euclid Corridor project has anything to do with The Cleveland Clinic expansion. I always felt RTA was acting tastelessly when shilling that

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
What in god's name is going on in Mentor? http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/09/5_student_suicides_put_focus_o.html 5 student suicides put focus on bullying issue in Mentor "MENTOR, Ohio -- Little more than a year after Mentor High School adopted an internationally known program designed to prevent bullying, 16-year-old junior Sladjana Vidovic hanged herself from a bedroom window....." There are a few extremely disturbing things here. First, I am utterly shocked that 5 students in one school committed suicide in 3 years. I have no clue what the national average is, but this seems extremely high. Two, in reading the article, it also seems the teachers at Mentor were at best complicit and at worst contributory to the problem. "The Mentor school district does not acknowledge that bullying has been a problem. " What? It took 5 years for them to implement some kind formal anti-bullying policy? Where was the principal during these 5 years? What about students who would have witnessed the abuses? Any teachers or administrators nearby? How come no one came forward and did something? And what is this crap about "Bullying issue is 'touchy.'" Explain that one to me. Suppose the victims were being sexually abused instead of emotionally? There are laws about harassment and abuse and assault. What's touchy about enforcing nonphysical abuse? Third, I can tell everyone here that kids these days are changing for the worse. Or maybe it's just that people are scummier than in year's past. The other day, I was looking at my youngest niece's facebook messages with some of her peers, and....jesus....I wouldn't be surprised if there was a similar incident at Orange one of these days. Some of these girls were saying absolutely chilling things about one-another - it's like a whole other level of smack talking that I have never seen before. Fourth, these bullies from 05-08 are probably now all in college. I'd be curious to hear reporters interview them a little more. Do a little more research and see if they're still evil sociopaths or see if they've matured. Do they regret being bullies? Do they even realized they contributed to someone's death? Of course, the article does say, "they told him the allegations had been blown out of proportion" so I guess they don't feel all that guilty.

Japanese moving to northeast ohio - Help Please
I would say Solon. There is a great business community, close proximity to Chagrin Falls, has a lot of young families, fairly diverse community racially in a good way, metroparks, has immediate freeway access, has a lot more momentum in general

Superdickery.com has a ton of those kinds of comics. They used to do a ton of S&M back in the day (think old school Wonder Woman comics) and it was all pretty tongue in cheek.

I can't wait for that Green Lantern movie - Reynolds was a good choice. It's so bizarre how DC only takes their live action Superman and Batman films seriously whereas everything else is complete junk (The Losers, Steel, Catwoman, Watchmen, Jonah Hex). They such an incredible library of characters that would make for amazing franchises: Wonder Woman, Flash, Plastic Man, JLA, JSA, Starman (1990s version), Hitman, Preacher, etc. Meanwhile, Marvel is printing out movie after movie every year that really range in quality as we have utter crap (Fantastic Four series, Blades 2 + 3, Hulk, Electra) to mediocre (Iron Man 2, Spiderman 3, Daredevil) to good (Xmen, Spiderman, Incredible Hulk) to damn good (Xmen 2, Spiderman 2, Iron Man 1, Punisher: War Zone, Blade I). The Thor movie looks weak so far and I wasn't crazy about the Captain America stills (the uniform looked really bulky), but still, Marvel is really doing a great job at least getting those films into production. But then again, DC keeps printing out impressive comic book animated films with only a few misses, I find whereas Marvel's are almost all pretty boring. The more recent DC ones are just incredible (Under the Red Hood probably had the best action sequences of any film I've seen all year)

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Atlantic City? Albany?? Hartford??? NEW ORLEANS???? I agree there are probably some US cities that will become ghost towns in the next few generations. But this list is just bizarre and completely random. Did the writers just throw a dart at a map of the US?
