Indoctrinated distrust of the police by inner city black men, women, and children. Perhaps concerns of safety and reprisals for talking. Proudful ignorance as well. It's probably some combo of those reasons

To iPhone/ipad/ipodtouch users, enjoy http://iphonemoviez.net. The tv shows work about 2/3 of the time; the movies 100%. Usually the movies are in 5 or 6 parts at 20 minutes. Seriously, this site rocks. Just watched the Prestige. Awesome! Enjoy:).
  3. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/09/naacp_city_council_members_cal.html NAACP, city council members call on mayor to find solutions in Warehouse District "CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Black civic leaders said this morning they want Mayor Frank Jackson to take a more assertive role in the Warehouse District controversy and to lead the city toward solutions. " Even though I don't care for the organization, I have to give the NAACP credit for pushing for discourse on this topic before patrons, area residents and area business owners say enough is enough and abandon the stret. Reed and Patmon are right - something needs to be done and soon - though their concerns only address some of the problems, mostly the racial aspects and they're not being completely genuine. But at least they're talking, which is more than I can say for Frank. Our mayor does appear detached on the subject of public safety on one of downtown Cleveland's few nightlife areas, and some grandstanding is important. For instance, if there were some major problems in the Rush/Division area, the Vegas Strip, or my old stomping grounds at Federal Hill, Baltimore, then I have to imagine the cities' respective mayors would have more a presence in the discussion. Press conferences, radio addresses, television or print interviews - anything to get the point across that the city's leader is aware of the issues and is making real, proactive attempts to initiate change. Remember Michael White's battle for the Browns. I think the reason W6 going downhill is so alarming is that it shows that maybe Cleveland cannot handle nightlife. Among other reasons, the criminal element and an anything-goes atmosphere in the Flats contributed to the area's decline. Now there are some parallels W6's recent issues. And if W6 can tumble, then why not W9 or E4 eventually? Where does it stop. One brief anecdote: my girlfriend went on some bachelorette party last week starting at Barley House and moving all over. Around 1:30am, when the girls were drunkenly getting on the party, some underage mutants were catcalling them. And not just cute flirting, but things involving the c-word that do not bear repeating. The girls were too drunk to really care; me, I would have flipped out and broken someone's neck if I had been there! Well, maybe. The point is, the area is changing for the worse (this kind of conduct would have never been accepted a few years ago), and if we lose W6, then there's no reason other trendy neighborhoods can't suffer similar fates.

I will check on that. I don't know offhand, it was right by the freeway, closer to the I-90 side.
  5. The relatively recent addition of Legacy Village does make that overall area a good location for killing a day as there are very different stores and restaurants in the three malls. I mentioned on another forum that my dad volunteers at the Dietrich Museum. In addition, he is also involved with the National Ocular Heritage Society from which a large number of people (mostly retired ophthalmologists and their families) are coming to town next April. This is a bit of a coup for the city since the members usually hit up more major cities, and my dad is helping organize their activities during the 3 days/2 nights. For better of for worse, it's looking like they will be spending a large chunk of at least one of the days at the Beachwood Place/La Palace/Legacy Village mall triad. And before anyone starts whining about tourists spending time in the suburbs vs in the city proper, you have to realize that mobility/retail congestion is going to be an issue for some of these folks, and the proximity between the three malls in addition to their decent restaurants and good clothing and other retail stores does enhance the area's reputation as a kind of destination.
  6. According to my friends at Cheesecake Factory, the restaurants other than Cheese and maybe Brio are doing poorly. Servers at the other 8 restaurants are evidently pulling in $80-$90/night at dinner shifts whereas Cheesecake hits $25grand on average during the same shifts with servers hitting $140 plus.
  7. Question. Maybe rhetorical question. So Weiss fur left Beachwood place earlier this year and had some going out of business sales at some temporary outlet store on Chagrin rd. But now I see that they're opening one up in Legacy Village, which must be an expensive place to operate a business. Can someone explain this business plan? Of course, I am happy that Legacy is filling it's vacancies as this, an expensive store, a seasonal Halloween store, and something next to Joe Beth are filling this struggling mall nicely.

Another best kept secret: the boardwalk at Lakewood park. You get the most amazing view of downtown. My east sider friends were in pure shock. Another secret: the converted loft condos on 55th that are crazy cheap, quite large and support a growing gay population. Mini lakewood on the rise?
  9. TBideon replied to a post in a topic in City Discussion
My dad volunteers there - it really is a secret, even among case kids
  10. Tedolph probably got it from here: http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2010/08/sales_tax_collections_up_this.html Sales tax collections up this year in Ohio "Sunday's Numbers, a weekly feature from The Plain Dealer 2.5 percent: County sales tax collections are up 2.5 percent this year for the 80 Ohio counties that have not changed their rates from the same period last year. Some $529 million was collected through May and distributed to the counties through July. 2 percent: Size of the increase in sales tax collections for Cuyahoga County, or $1.7 million over the five months....."
  11. Having watched a few episodes, I can also agree that the show is garbage. Absolute crap. Some of the worst writing in the history of night-time American television. The jokes, one-liners, and over-the-top acting are ridiculously awful and the laugh track button seems to be broken as it seems to go off at a far higher rate than the average sitcom. Live studio audience my arse - those laughs ain't real!! The "star" Valerie Bertinelli is in particular unfunny, untalented, and the show's director is doing a bad job at hiding the weight she's clearly gained back since those bikini shots last year. True the program is a remarkable hit and my guess is that it is 110% due to Betty White and her popularity since the Proposal (really stemming from Lake Placid when she began this crass granny character that continued to Boston Legal and now this show). Then again, to each his own. My sister watches the show every week, mostly due to the Cleveland connection. And the theme song, though brief, is kinda cute. But the show. Really. Yikes. Doesn't hold a candle to Drew Carey, which in itself was pretty hit or miss.
  12. Very cool stuff. They really should get better marketing outside of EC (you're of course doing a great job) since the PD hasn't touched this story in months
  13. I'll tell you, I never even knew there was the remotest issue between Akron and Cleveland until the Lebron interview. Or maybe it's like the Steelers/Browns alleged rivalry, where Browns' fans hate the Steelers while the Steelers' fans couldn't care less about the Browns. Then again, the Steelers don't seem to mind having a violent criminal for a quarterback, so I guess they're just laid back out their in the Pits.
  14. I spent the afternoon, evening and a large chunk of the night at the Lakewood park yesterday. If that isn't one of the most pleasant areas in metro Cleveland, I don't know what is. The promenade, which I'll refer to as the boardwalk because we need one here, in particular had some stunning views.

According to a friend's facebook newsfeed: "Good news, the Cedar Center construction has finally started after a 2-year hiatus... right outside my bedroom window at 6 in the morning."
  16. I dunno. The firm already went through three rounds of layoffs last year with a number of Cleveland attorneys and paralegals taking a hit - I can't imagine how that affected morale. Someone always seems to lose during mergers.
  17. That doesn't sound good.
  18. I understand the environmental value of this program, but it's really a cloaked tax and a disincentive to live in the city proper
  19. Wow, I never knew

I will probably buy a 7 inch ipad, but it is a little silly that we (will soon) have a 10 inch, 7 inch, and 3 inch ipad to choose from (ipod touch is close enough to an ipad). I'm thinking the 10 inch ones will be phased out since that's a tad big for tablets. 7 inches just seems perfect. And yes, that's what she said
  21. Is there a mobilized version of UO for phones?

Superdickery.com just go there - there are no words
  23. Wow, I never knew honor based systems were so prevalent. How are they enforced, if at all, in other cities
  24. How could RTA have not planned for this? An honor-based fare collection? I've never heard of anything that silly.
