Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Good question. Being 28 now, I suppose I am starting to get a little old for that area. Also, I definitely enjoy Tremont and E4 more since you don't go there strictly to meet people but rather to hang out. Still, 28 isn't THAT old for W6

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Just a few thoughts. The easiest solution would be to have mandatory dress codes in all of the bars and clubs. Also the streets should be cleaned out by 3am latest with some sort of curfew law. On the dress code, that means guys would have to wear slacks or jeans, no hats, and no baggy clothing. I would also prohibit hip-hop nights and 18 year old nights too, if the clubs still have them there. I don't know if this would hurt business, but at least the clubs would seem a little more refined and the overall atmosphere would be calmer. Next, I don't know if Forbes is off his rocker. Maybe there is a double standard of how cops treat black vs white party-goers. I can't believe some gangbanger would go as far to formally complain about his treatment, which tells me that some of the complaints are probably legitimate and by good guys just trying to have fun. Next, like it or not, there is a growing racial tension and disharmony on W6, and I have noticed a lot more ugly behavior by predominantly young black men. I used to go once a week at least, but now it's closer to two or three times a month max, and I notice a level of aggressiveness that did not exist a few years ago. The incidents mentioned in cleveland.com seem very familiar, and I'm starting to enjoy myself less and less in that area. Friends of mine living on that street and W9 have been saying these things for a long while since before I moved back to Cleveland, but I've been unwilling to admit the same since it's just....so damn depressing. But after reading this article and subsequent comments on this and cleveland.com, I have to admit - W6 is going downhill. Why do all of these nice places we have take a turn for the worse:( Is West 9th next? East 4th? Finally, having gone to W6 the last few years and early/middish 2000s, I can say that I've been attacked by a UFC wannabee whiteguy at Bar Fly (for conversing with his girlfriend), pushed against a wall by some college/grad school age white guy in the Blind Pig basement (for making out with his female friend), and my date was assaulted by a black dude who had 2 of his black friends with him. Nothing horribly traumatic and I guess you have to expect some level of adversity in areas where everyone is drunk - but still, times are 'a changin'.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
It's hard not to smile reading this article. Katie O'Keefe shows her love of Cleveland with tattoos [url=http://http://www.cleveland.com/pdq/index.ssf/2010/07/katie_okeefe_shows_her_love_of.html] http://www.cleveland.com/pdq/index.ssf/2010/07/katie_okeefe_shows_her_love_of.html Katie O'Keefe, a 28-year-old Web designer/developer at Case Western Reserve University, might be our city's most dogged cheerleader. After growing up in Avon Lake, her family moved to New Jersey in 2001. She went with them. "One of the biggest mistakes of my life," she says. Now back home for good.....

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
They closed the Sony Store from Beachwood Mall earlier this year, and the closest one is in Columbus. This would be a good location. Of course what Cleveland really needs is a real Borders or Barnes & Noble (not that garbage at Tower City or CSU), but I'm sure the space here is too small.

Fluff pieces are always fun to read, but in the end this article is pretty pointless.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
In reference to what CBC said, there does seem to be some momentum in Cleveland lately. It's hard to explain, but things don't feel as dire as they were the last few years. If you look at sports, the Indians have basically bottomed out and are rebuilding the team with some studs (Santana and LaPorta in particular) and surprisingly good starting pitching (Talbot, Carmona, Westbrook). As bad as the Tribe is right now, you can tell they are on the verge of putting it together. Same with the Browns - we have a new team that is probably going to win at least 7 games this year. Regarding the Cavs, we can finally start building an entire team as opposed to surrounding one superstar with overpaid veterans. So clearly we have some sports momentum and have probably bottomed out. A number of major events - Gay Games, DNC, Ohio Special Olympics, a bunch of others - are going to happen, are rumored to happen, or have already happened. That kind of publicity is only good for the community and morale. Politically, we are finally getting rid of these scumbag commissioners and other local politicians who have caused unimaginable havoc to the city and neighboring counties. They are leaving, and the city could not possibly hire any more incompetent and malicious individuals. Things can only improve from a political perspective. Plus you read about the museums (Moca, Natural History, Art) in University Circle getting more money for expansion, the Clinic always seems to be building, Bette White is doing what Drew did 15 years ago, various downtown and neighborhood projects, and so on... There does seem to be some momentum here. It's just a feeling I've had for a little while now.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I had the Lobster Bisque at Southside in Tremont today with a side salad. Fantastic salad and the Lobster Bisque, especially when you add chilli sauce and pepper, was just out of this world. Only 9 bucks for the meal too!

Cleveland Flats memories from back in the day!
Kind of a sad but interesting look at tbe Flats today. Not the most professional video, but the pop ups are very informative to someone who doesn't really know that much about the Flats clubbing history.

Looks like there are some bulldozers and new temporary fences parked at the empty part of Cedar Center. A lot of the debris is finally being cleared out

Help, I got two driving citations
I don't know if anyone else was involved unless you mean the cop. He just pulled me over; the first driver was well on the way. Anyway, I called city hall today and asked about what the fees were. It turns out the cop changed his mind as I was charged with something totally different than what's on the ticket, I think it was not yielding as opposed to reckless endangerment (the latter of which he had written on the ticket). Not yielding is only 2 points, and $165 total ($135 for the traffic violation, $30 for the ticket). So I'm wondering if he cut me a break. I'll probably just pay it off....unless you guys think that two points will increase my rates, in which case I'd want to plead not guilty and then find the prosecutor before the hearing. Also, the cop did check the 'waiverable through violations bureau' box too.

Help, I got two driving citations
So if I went to court and lost, are you saying that the court wouldn't notify them that I would get 4 points? Or that I was involved in this mess in the first place? Man, 12 years of being an overly careful driver and then this happens!!!

Help, I got two driving citations
So I took a left turn outside of a store and almost hit an oncoming car. Either he was going faster than I was, or I was going too slow. Either way, the car had to swerve out of the way and of course a police car was behind him. So I received two citations for reckless endangerment and not having a seatbelt, but no ticket (I'll call tomorrow to see what the costs are). My court date is in a few weeks, and I have no idea what to do, if this is going to screw up my insurance, what happens if I plead no contest, not guilty, etc. I've done some research and I think I'll get 4 points for the reckless driving and 0 points for the no seatbelt. Am I right about this? Will this raise my insurance substantially? I've heard that I should go to court, plead not guilty, then try to talk to the prosecutor before the next court date and explain what happened, that I haven't had a ticket in 12 years (for going 37 in a 25). Will I be then responsible for court costs if I go to court and lose? What would that run? I'm really not sure what to do here, and quite frankly I'm a little freaked out. This happened in South Euclid a few days ago, but every time I called they have no news for me on the case (it hasn't been uploaded into the computer). Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? What I should expect?

Food around CWRU?
At Cedar/Lee, they have a decent Thai restaurant, Lemon Grass. Not too bad and it's closer to Case than Tai Fun Bistro in Tremont.

Cleveland: University Circle News (Non-Construction)
I disagree. First of all, the article is very flattering for the area and a nice little promotion for a great part of the city proper. Next, the Medical District name doesn't have to replace the University Circle completely - it can just be a major component of it. And third, maybe the whole area should be renamed the Medical District. If medicine is the new manufacturing for Cleveland, then we need to focus all of our attention on that, which includes semantical changes that might be a little more appealing or recognizable to other parties. For instance, I guarantee you that if CSU changed its name to University of Cleveland, there would be some positive effects since that name sounds more...professional. Case medical/health line/Clinic/UH/all those bio companies on Euclid..... It really has become a medical district.

Cleveland: University Circle News (Non-Construction)
Some yahoo.com love. This may eventually be a whole new topic. Introducing Cleveland's newest neighborhood: The Medical District On Cleveland's east side there's a neighborhood called University Circle. It's an anachronism. The "circle" part disappeared 60 years ago. There is one university. Yet the same area includes three hospital systems, medical and nursing schools, the local biotech trade group and many of the city's medical startups. Enough. Down with the name University Circle. Expand the borders a bit and call it what it is: The Medical District. http://news.yahoo.com/s/medcity/medcity_ts3037#mwpphu-container

Tell me about Gay Ohio life
I have some gay friends who live in a really neat area by St. Clair/E.55 in some converted warehouses. It's a quiet little area and they feel safe and happy with their investments. I don't know if you can consider it an emerging, gentrified community (I wasn't crazy about the surrounding neighborhoods), but hey, you gotta start somewhere. They regularly hit up some of the clubs in Lakewood and Cleveland and are having a pretty good, dare I say, gay ole' time:)

The Dating Thread
To people here in their 30s and up, how easy was it to meet people in the Flats back in the hey day? I've heard that it was impossible NOT to get numbers and "action" during those awesome nights.

Isn't it high time we liberalize our liquor laws?
Absolutely. The main reason that college drinking in the US is so problematic is the ludicrous age restrictions and "taboo makes me want it" mentalities. Kids in France and Italy drink as early adolcesents, and you never hear about the kind of dangerous inebriation in their college systems, not like in the US. Plus, if you're mature enough to drive a car at 16, well, then you should be able to decide if you want to drink some overpriced booze as well.

How many passengers will there need to be on average per day/week/month/year for this project to be a financial success?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Quick review for Paladar in Woodmere. I don't know if they got a new, inexperienced chef or were just having one of those days, but the food was just terrible when I was there last week. The shrimp cerviche, tortilla soup and coffee were almost inedible, and I have very low standards. A huge disappointment.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Did anyone take the train dowtown for the fireworks at public square? I have heard some very negative things about the transit police attitudes and behavior at Tower City and was wondering if anyone witnessed anything similar

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
I recall that Mayor Jackson and/or some other local political leaders said that we could put up temporary hotel housing if we were to get the RNC in '08. That seems like the only feasible option as I cant imagine shuttles to suburban and there is no way any developer is going to build a hotel in 12 months. Not in this town.
