Why on earth does Dubai keep building these ridiculously tall buildings. Other than the ego element, I can't imagine those buildings are all that necessary or practical, not to mention that 100+ story buildings in a (somewhat) Western friendly Muslim state is...a little disconcerting. No offense intended by that last comment, just an observation.

I didn't tell anyone about the incident since I had a train to catch and didn't want to deal with it, and the CCTV cameras are ineffective in England (just google it and read some news stories), despite their effectiveness (though somewhat futile) against Jason Bourne.

This is a strange argument. One of the posters asked what people wanted downtown, and I gave three answers. Perhaps New York doesn't have Giant Eagles on every corner, but for me personally, I would like to have one downtown. I'm not saying what's most economically or pratically feasible, just what I'd like. What's the issue here??

The fact that you're comparing the Cleveland Public Library and a Borders Express to a Borders is ludicrious. And I don't just want a specialty, expensive grocerymart - I want a Giant Eagle. And regarding the Tower City theater, well, let's just say it's not the most pleasant of places though perhaps any other movie theaters downtown would have similar troubles

I'd rather have more police officers or perhaps some kind of formalized volunteer deputee force in that area. I almost got into a brawl with 4 abusive guys (they were harassing/cat calling people, throwing out the n word to each other loudly, and blocking the entrance) at about 6:45pm outside the doors of Tower City, and if they had decided to jump me (luckily they (clearly angrilly) backed away when I told/shouted at them to get the F out of the way after they purposely ignored my original polite request to move aside), it would have gotten ugly very fast Plus, I've heard that these kinds of cameras are ineffective in England, so I'm a little pessimistic as to their effectiveness.

That's an amazing picture of Cleveland on the website - I don't think I've ever seen the city from that angle. It looks bigger somehow

A friend of mine in DC texted me today and said he heard that some bailout package has actually been negotiated and agreed upon. I asked him for more info but he hasn't gotten back to me. I'm missing something about why people don't want a parking lot. Perhaps it could be used for people to drive to UC so that they can access the health line.

Well, I'm considering moving downtown in late 2009. Honestly, though, I couldn't care less what businesses are there as long as there's something, anything, that can fill a lot of these vacancies. A Giant Eagle, movie theater, and Borders would of course be nice.

From one of the cleveland.com posters: "The Huntington building will now be redeveloped as mostly residential. Everyone in the development community is talking about it. That will actually make this a net gain for downtown because the BP tower will be full and the Huntington Building will have new life as well. " Is that true, that the development community is really planning on something for the Huntington building?

There was a great scene in the West Wing (maybe season 1), where Martin Sheen chastises a religous wacko's views on homosexuality and lists a number of idiotic Biblical provisions that are clearly not followed by even the most religious zealots. Not to mention, but does the bible even talk specificlaly about gay marriage? I'm not talking about gay acts or being gay, but just the marriage

Bleak as in depressing. I don't know, there's just a negative vibe lately with the national and economic local problems.

^Understandibly frustrated. As mayor, he should be addressing the city about our current problems - and I mean ALL of them - and discuss what's going on, what improvements he plans, and so on. We need visible resassurance that things are going to get better, and we need visible leadership. I can't tell you how bleak it's been lately downtown and we Clevelanders truly deserve a boost of confidence with Mayor Jackson telling us in a televised conference, even if impromtu, about a lot of the city's problems and his response to each one. We need some reason to be inspired and optimistic, something to change our perception of what's been going on. I mean, we need something from the man, some reason to believe he's working furiously behind closed doors to help better our present and future lives here; otherwise, he just appears as a nice guy in way over his head.

MTS is absolutely correct. I recently flip flopped on the issue when thinking about the big picture. Originally, I was for the auto bailout because of how many jobs and lives are at stake (millions!). However, I've changed my mind completely. Putting a $50 billion bandaid on this wound is not going to make people want to buy Fords. The big three need to file Chapter 11, have a massive restructuring, and stop bending over to the unions that are forcing $3000 per car to go to health benefits for retirees. That's just not sutatainable in the long run and we would through all this again. Hell, didn't we bail them out a few decades ago already??? At most I could see the government helping fascilitate some kind of merger and in doing so loan some, but obvoiusly not the $50 billion, money to whichever entity would need it, provided that such money would be fully exempt from any potential bankruptcies down the road. We had to bail out the banks because they are the crux of our economy. The Big Three are not and if we bail them out, where do we stop?
