Ohio payday lending regulation
That's too bad - I voted against this legislation because for every moron who lives outsides his means and has to use these kinds of stores, there is someone who, despite living on a buget and being very careful with her finanaces, simply cannot wait two weeks for the next check to come in. Not everyone can afford to save for a rainy day. Sometimes it hit all just hits the fan at once

What Obama may mean for Cities
Some kind of national level infrastructure project, which would create lots of jobs and of course have all kinds of longterm benefits.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
"Also, today's Americans do not need smaller bus seats... several riders have noted this." I don't think RTA should be punished for the average Americans' gluttony. But signal prioritization is something that really should have been taken care of earlier, as it really is the crux of this whole project. Stil, I'm sure it'll be working properly soon enough.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
"...With that hope [for redevelopment] comes an abundance of doubt" Would that kind of negative commentary happen in ANY other city besides Cleveland? I mean, does this guy work for the Plain Dealer or something?

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Nice little article here, though I would be concerned with Joe Calabrese's quote at the end since it isn't really true. http://newsmanager.commpartners.com/aptapt/issues/2008-11-03/8.html Greater Cleveland RTA Launches HealthLine BRT “This exciting project is a role model for the rest of the nation.” With those words, Federal Transit Administration Chief Counsel E.S. Severn Miller joined other officials Oct. 24 to launch the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s (GCRTA) new HealthLine—the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in the nation to be funded with federal New Starts money. “This BRT project is cost-effective and environmentally friendly,” said Miller. “It is a terrific way to move people.” The weekend-long launch of HealthLine service began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and continued with free service, a community open house along Euclid Avenue, fireworks, and a family concert. The 21 new Rapid Transit Vehicles (RTV) operating on the line, 63-foot articulated vehicles powered with hybrid-electric engines, were packed much of the time. GCRTA signed a $168.4 million Full Funding Grant Agreement for the project in October 2004. Development work for the BRT project has included the restoration of Euclid Avenue. The HealthLine connects Cleveland’s two largest employment centers, downtown and University Circle, ending in neighboring East Cleveland. The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, both located on the route, purchased naming rights to the line for $6.25 million. The line operates on 9.4 miles of transit-only lanes on Euclid Avenue and two downtown streets. The 63-foot RTVs from New Flyer were designed specifically for use on the HealthLine, with doors on both sides, 11 interior and exterior cameras, and a signal prioritization system. The service operates with “rail-like” features such as level boarding, precision docking, and off-board fare collection. “I am thrilled that this first-class service will significantly reduce travel time for our customers,” said GCRTA Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Joe Calabrese. “It has already generated more than $4 billion in new and planned development.”

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I'm suprised that you guys are happy about this rumor. I understand that the Tower City site might not be the best one, but considering Cleveland has just lost National City, Eaton and now, for a while at least, the Flats, I just can't celebrate another project's being delayed. I mean, what if this is the impetus to our losing the Med Mart completely. That would be just heartbreaking.

Jones Day is actually a major legal firm, one of the world's biggest and most well paid, and is headquartered in downtown Cleveland. It is also one of the reasons that the city will not allow Burke to be redeveloped, as a number of Jones Day's clients travel straight to Burke and then limo to the North Point building on East 9th and Lakeshore to do business. And I plan on attending the Jones New York store later today, as I noticed some pretty good sales when I walked by there this morning.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
The Dodgers offered Manny a 2 year $60 million contract, and he wants a 4 year $80 million contract. Is there any chance the Indians make a bid? Sabbathia rejecting the 4 year $72 million contract (which is just absurd, especially for a pitcher) from the Tribe shows they are willing to spend that kind money - I saw they go for it!

"do folks look at the HealthLine as a "new" route/line or rehabilitation/renaming of the 6?" It feels like the former though it's really just the latter

I love that name - University of Cleveland. It has a more professional feel than CSU and hey, sometimes comestic changes count

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
My understanding is that there is an attrition rate of something like 5000 workers every year at NC. Since there is a hiring freeze presently, then the workers who would have left anyway simply won't be replaced, and since there's a big difference between the bank firing people vs simply not hiring new ones, I'm (attempting to be) cautiously) optimistic that there won't be massive layoffs. Also, I would think that PNC's investing in the Flats East Bank would be a heck of a way to ingratiate itself to the Cleveland community, where it will obviously have a strong presence even if there are mass layoffs.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I will be next year about a month before my lease expires. And, according the website, I just realized the mortgage would be closer to $15k/year, not $25k, which definitely changes things a bit

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I do plan/hope to move downtown within the next year or so, and these condos seem like a very attractive option - I'm actually on the website right now. Unfortunately, I can't imagine I'll be in a financial situation that would allow me to purchase anything even remotely close to the price they're asking. I'm sure this is has been discussed on these boards, but have there been any rumblings as to an upcoming price drop. The tax abatement is great as is but I cannot possibly pay $25k+/yr in mortgage payments alone.

^I'm sure mistakes like that happen with any major project. At least now the driver knows better. It's also comforting to see that the passengers knew the new route so well. Nothing worse than mindless drones

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
I'm just dreading the next Feagler column. We all know El Smugo is going to say something like this: "Last Friday, National City, a beloved Cleveland institution responsible for thousands of well-paying jobs, was sold to Pittsburgh. The death of this company will mean thousands of dollars of lost tax revenue, jobs lost, families' lives disrupted, and yet another slam to the city I once loved. In response, Mayor Jackson decided to party like it's 1999 with the opening of the Euclid Corridor Project. Hurray, now I can take a bus from East Cleveland to downtown, but only this time in buses that are silver!" And so on and so forth.....
