  1. $8 billion in stock buybacks stemming from a profit of $10 billion last year, and now many 100s of lives ruined. There have got to be consequences, whether legal or extrajudicial. This behavior is simply destructive.
  2. YTD: Dow up 4.47% S&P up 16.62% Tech up 22.26% - Microsoft and Apple racing to $4 trillion. Nvidia will get there too. Goodness...
  3. Why do these politicians always babble about praying during tragedies. It's such a trite trope, meaningless, empty, copy-pasted from tens of thousands of prior horrors. Sorry and fury should be the response. How about Bibb encourages communities to work with law enforcement, be vigilant, even self-police. Put out rewards or bounties for gangbangers and associates. Work with the governor on imposing a semi-permanent National Guard presence with checkpoints. Actually enfore the highest penalites for gun-related crimes. And ignore the loudmouths who profit off this generational anarchy. Clearly what we've been doing for 60 years isn't working. Anything is better than the hopes and prayers bulls**t.
  4. That whole street is just a nightmare to drive on in general. If they closed it down from CSU to Public Square and pedestrianized those blocks, that would be fantastic. Let the gangly buses drive on the enormous Superior instead.
  5. The number 6 was smooth sailing when I went to Case. I couldn't tell you how long the ride went, but it didn't seem bad. Hell, the 9 and 9x weren't too shabby from Lyndhurst to downtown either. Maybe 45 minutes? An hour? I can't recall. 32X was solid too.
  6. Fair point. The city never really addressed why it abandoned signal priority, plus the ongoing back-and-forth nonsense about "equity" with fair evasion/enforcement has just led to longer trips. 45 minutes from Public Square to Stokes is NOT BRT by any stretch of the imagination. It's all so laughable. Seems this line was cursed on day one (the same day National City collapsed).

I agree US public schools are trainwrecks, but I don't know if Indian schools are that effective as a whole. China too. Those countries encompass such a huge chunk of the global population that there must be an insane range of school quality. Meanwhile US city schools are zoos and Oklahoma is mandating teaching the Bible. Seems like we can't help but race to the bottom. Generations of useless graduates.

Move over, remote jobs. CEOs say borderless talent is the future of tech work https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/30/move-over-remote-ceos-say-borderless-talent-future-tech-jobs.html Without UBI, national healthcare, and seemingly ANY government regulation over offshoring, I am not enjoying my morning coffee.
  9. Now that is a well-researched article. Love love love all that data, KJP. Plus Bibb could pull a Daley. Worth the $33k fine, or whatever it would be today.
  10. In 2000 Hopkins handled 13.3 million people. Last year it handled 9.9 million people. That's a 25% dip in passengers. Not saying traffic also dipped 25%, but surely there is some effect. Ol' Hopkins can survive a handful of Sundays with a few dozen thousand extra cars heading to Jimmy Eat World.
  11. Best record in the majors! 667 tonight? Carrasco -- use the force and remember what you once were. 2014-2018 return!
  12. They are getting Wrestlemania (a 2-night, mega revenue generating event), Summerslam (so are we!), and Royal Rumble. Indianapolis is doing something right there.
  13. And I jinxed his BA last night. I'm sorry Kwan!!! Also, I'm loving Baltimore this year. They're making it very interesting. Also, f Boston.
  14. Probably the most exciting stat in baseball, albeit it's been a dull year for pitching and hitting numbers, and it's not getting much traction. As of this moment, Kwan is hitting 396, though not yet qualified to be ranked. I believe he needs 11 more at bats to be the list, so by Monday he should be appear there, I think. CBS Sports seems to think he needs more, whereas the Cleveland.com blurb states he just needs 11 at bats. Most exciting run since Manny's 165 RBIs and Bell's 50 home runs, and this is way more impressive.
  15. Hopefully the casino there being DOA doesn't impede this project. Exact same storyline as the Gilbert one in Cleveland.
  16. Got elderly parents myself. The amount of money, covered by insurance, secondaries, copays, deductibles, and remaining member share, for what is effectively end-of-life care is just astounding. Criminal. Not f'ing sustainable. It is a financial drain, probably the biggest national crisis, though obviously intersecting other serious problems.
  17. Problem is conservatives would sooner go to civil war than support national healthcare or even a public option. Even at the expense of their health. Of course they openly welcome Medicare when they're 65, hypocrite bastards.
  18. Oh sure, I'm not arguing against that. And obviously a second income would be very helpful, especially if there are children involved. Everyone's situation is different.
  19. $34 trillion dollar debt is a scary number. The price for world peace has, for a long time, been contingent on the US subsidizing other countries' militaries. It made sense when we were a hegemon, but these days, it is frustrating that money isn't being used for subsidizations internally. But defense spending is what, 3 percent? 4? Spending several trillion on Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and ACA while abandoning working adults to fend for themselves with few labor protections for their employer-based care - that is not sustainable or even logical. My unemployed friend, family of four, pays $2300/month in COBRA. How is that possible?
  20. I'm okay, up 10% in the markets, stable income, a bit underwater with my mortgage but no specials this year, no significant bills to worry save for reasonable repairs i.e. HVAC and plumbing. I'm very lucky. A lot of people aren't. And if I had a spouse and/or chlldren, things would be much harder.
  21. The article makes good points, but it's also, oddly, part of the problem. People are struggling, the middle class is suffering, and even the higher tier jobs have taken a huge hit with 18 months of significant tech and white collar layoffs. Healthcare coverage and costs are just abominable in the US, affordable, quality housing non-existent, and education has both gotten so much worse since COVID and more expensive. Those costs alone obliterate nominal increases in household wages. So when you read articles about how good things really are, well, that can have a polarizing effect on all those people, voters, who have had difficult time for so long. The data just doesn't match most people's economies, at least those whose net worth isn't tied into the markets, and unlike Germany and Italy, the US doesn't really provide adequate safety nets. I would say things are pretty bad regardless of GDP growth and lowered CPI/PPI.
  22. Reminds me of those articles where some cities offer a stipend for people to move there and work remotely. It's so desperate and shortsighted. What happens if the transplant loses their job or loses the remote option. It's not like those cities have other opportunities, else they wouldn't need these silly programs, so now the transplant is stuck in Tulsa or wherever. All for $5 or $10 thousand.
