There is without question a ton of hypocrisy with those who oppose "gentrification", however they define it, especially with racial dynamics. White people moving into low-income black or Hispanic neighborhoods are routinely vilified for pushing out local residents, which is such nonsense and limited to really a handful of cities in the US, and within them a handful of neighborhoods. Yet, at least in Chicago, you have protesters adamant about the Obama library NOT being built in Jackson Park, else the white gentrifiers will arrive and push out the poor black and Hispanic from those impoverished, high-crime adjacent neighborhoods. A completely fantasy, as South Shore and Woodlawn are years, maybe decades, away from being safe, functional neighborhoods, regardless of a museum nearby. And yet the people who protest the most about investors and white residents moving in are the FIRST to also vilify the more functional neighborhoods for not being diverse enough, which in itself is a false claim as there is much more to diversity than just black/brown or white. The lesson of the day: Diversity in poor areas = gentrification, pushing out the poor, and thus racism. And we can't have that, so let's block developments and damage new properties from new developers and residents alike. Let's protest new parks, stores, and museums, and other improvements because ALL improvements must be gentrification. Yet a (falsely perceived) lack of diversity in more viable, peaceful, and gentrified areas = racism. How dare they not take in their share of section 8 housing, of affordable housing, of projects, etc, etc. So basically gentrification is racism. Of course a lack of gentrification is also racism. And finally diversity in poor, non-gentrified areas is also racism. The only thing that isn't racism is thus diversity - and by diversity we're limited to just racial diversity - in functional, already gentrified neighborhoods. Shit gets confusing. I swear you just can't win with some people.

Off my memory, don't go too West on Canal, especially at night. Mid-City has some real issues. Lower 9th ward is best to be avoided. Stick to the French Quarter and Garden District/Magazine street. Check out city park during the day, especially the sculpture garden. Take a street car to Tulane/Loyola. Frenchmen street (northern part of French Quarter) has a lot of gutter punks and long long long lines to the jazz and music clubs. Might be worth a visit but those lines + heat + sewage smells = pass in general.

I've got to say, Miami's public transportation is vastly better than I was led to believe. The trains take you to the interesting neighborhoods to the south (I doubt it was 15 minutes to Coral Gables), the buses have been fine and with real time monitoring access, the monorail was kind of fun... and the express bus to Miami beach flew!!! Much of downtown is gritty, which was a little surprising too.

It's an absolutely brutal job; a friend of mine is on his 6th month, and it's just very lonely, tiring, unhealthy, and poorly paid when you add all expenses. And that's with good weather.

I'm surprised Lyft, Uber and other rideshare companies are utilized so much that they can have any kind of financial impact to RTA with this tax. And for all the abstract additional expenses they incur, such as pollution and road use, they also provide major societal savings i.e. drunk driving, and consequences, reductions along with additional options for people to commute long distances downtown and spend their money at shows and restaurants. Seems nickel and diming to me. The city and RTA would be better served collaborating with these companies rather than squeezing them.

Jackson is certainly a more honorable person and mayor than Daley; that said, the city is still dramatically better off with his seizing the air field than before. And the airfield in Richmond Heights could feasibly absorb additional traffic and expand if that wasted Burke were ever properly developed. It's only ten miles away from downtown; Midway is 8.

Daley had real balls when he bulldozed those X's because of "9-11," and the city is far better for it. Northerly Island is a gem desire some setbacks with erosion. But I just can't see Jackson doing the same. Different kind of mayor.

With only minor, and I mean very minor, alterations, you could easily substitute Cleveland, Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Gary, Youngstown, St Louis, Memphis, Tucson, Kansas City, and on and on and on.
