  1. Utterly utterly utterly blown away by the Flats today. Holy shit there is a beach bar too? All it needs is a coffee shop and cigar shop.

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/07/cleveland_mayoral_candidate_er_1.html Cleveland mayoral candidate Eric Brewer's Facebook postings show a profane, inflammatory style Oh lord, don't tell me this guy is actually running for mayor? He sounds completely unhinged. So much verbal diarrhea. However, I don't think felons like Johnson and Reed are any better; at least Brewer's unprofessionalism is limited to his rhetoric, whereas the actual conduct of those other two nutters is something toxic. They're on par with Kwame Kilpatrick if anything. Where the hell is that orange guy from the last election?
  3. I'd imagine people who go to that Orange Fitness live within walking distance; those kinds of gyms are really geared more to locals like Soul Cycles, neighborhood athletic clubs, cross fit centers, etc, than larger scale gyms like an LA Fitness or Lifetime where large-scale parking is important.
  4. This one is a bit of a reach... https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20170801/bush/us-steel-finds-buyer-for-440-acre-south-works-site 20,000 Homes Planned For Huge Vacant U.S. Steel Site As New Buyer Emerges Hopefully smarter people than I are aware of the area's limitations, potential, and have good reason to believe this project, even in piecemeal, can be viable. Frankly I don't see it.
  5. It wouldn't be the first time General Growth has screwed over its tenants. http://www.cleveland.com/beachwood/index.ssf/2014/03/school_officials_say_beachwood.html School officials say Beachwood Place owner should have told merchants about tax hike
  6. You're boycotting Beachwood because the mayor is taking on two salaries? Well... that's a new one.
  7. There is real utility in improved morale. The downtown skyline has been virtually stagnant since, what, 2 high rises since Key Tower? A lack of cranes doesn't tell the whole story, but it certainly is not helpful to boosters and potential investors/businesses/residents. Even though I think Stark is a leech and liar, I would imagine this kind of project would loosen a lot of knots in stomachs about the city and region's status. We need some, more visual evidence of momentum

There are a lot of reasons why red-camera tickets are bullshit. First, the cameras cannot positively identify the driver so the bill goes to the registered owner. And if the owner is presumed guilty because its his car, well, so much for the presumption that a defendant is innocent under proven otherwise. Second, who can the defendant cross-examine in court? There's no witness to the violation. Doesn't a person have the right to cross-examine their accuser? Due Process? Bueller?? Third, the chain of evidence is pretty vague and is effectively hearsay. Fourth, fundamentally, red light cameras are a tax on the poor. There's a reason you see them in East Cleveland and not Hunting Valley. Fifth, those things actually cause accidents as drivers brake upon seeing the cameras, unnaturally interrupting the flow of traffic. Plenty of consequences there. Obviously the traffic safety argument that proponents make is bullshit. And never mind issues with ineffective and poorly maintained cameras, along with so many related fraud scandals (such as cities shortening yellow lights nearby cameras and improperly certified equipment).
  9. They are pretty horrible - I remember going to them during law school and feeling odd while inside. Lots of bad odors, like there was something off with the air.
  10. God almighty I do not miss those cones on Euclid.
  11. Wish it were a tad better connected to Larchmere. Loganberry is by far the best bookstore in the region.
  12. The NFL gave Cleveland an ultimatum as well, and we got one of the worst one-sided deals in the history of all sports with that stadium and its funding. The NBA can go to hell with that ultimatum nonsense; the stadium is FINE as is and does not cosmetic changes. If that means no All-Star game, then fine; I'm sure the restaurants and hotels nearby will somehow survive. If Gilbert wants renovations, then he can use his Casino Phase 2 money for that it. It certainly isn't going to what was promised repeatedly.

Mayweather is going to kill McGregor in under two minutes, and the promos have been laughably forced and fake. If McGregor were focusing on Mayweather's habit of beating the s-hit out of women, then we might have something interesting -- but the racial stuff is half-assed, lame, and you can tell Mayweather, really anyone, is not particularly bothered by it.
  14. This is a bad thing? Seems like people just want to have fun and be near others who want the same. Being outside by the river and Flats nostalgia probably help quite a bit.

I wish there were a database of all unruly and rude retail/restauraunt customers. A "do not serve" list shared nationwide. The best judge of character is how someone treats a clerk or server, and rude customers can go eat dirt and rocks if they behave poorly. More customers should be expelled from restaurants and retail shops, and have to make amends if they ever want direct service again. Employers have been welcoming hostile people and permitting employee abuse far too long.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-cook-county-law-enforcement-layoffs-met-20170714-story.html Soda tax delay leads Cook County to lay off more than 300 workers The outcry of this soda tax was/is insane. People screaming from the rafters that it's a racist law, that it's government overreach, that it affects the poor unfairly, that it doesn't affect behavior, yadda yada. Well, the tax has been put in the pastures for now. Huzzah.

  18. Guess the check cashing stores will have to open elsewhere for the time being. $331 million for 3 miles for a 35mph redundant road. I'm still shocked.
  19. You conveniently fail to note mention that the .8 mile walk to/from the Flats also includes navigating steep hills – some of the steepest on a Cuyahoga County street grid. Great exercise for some but not all, especially walking uphill on a hot evening in nice clothes... And why should people pay for Uber, or even stop, get off a train, and come outside to meet the cab, when an operating rail system already exists. Other cities, like Detroit, Milwaukee, Indy, Cincy, KC, etc., etc, are breaking their necks trying to build the type of rail system we already have and yet people, apparently you included, seem hell bent in wanting to throw it away. People in the wider world would laugh at Cleveland for this. And I have no idea what you mean by properly building the WFL or rushing it for the Centennial. They original idea from the 1980s was to move people from Tower City, the city’s rail hub, down to the tightly restricted streets (given, once again, the hill grades surrounding it along with the FEB’s narrow streets). And the WFL’s added bonus is a 1-seat ride into the Flats from the East Side/Eastern suburbs… So what do you mean be improving WFL infrastructure any more than it is? Hell bent on wanting to throw it away? Oh come on, that's a bit overdramatic. It's an incomplete, underutilized for years, rushed project - not sure what else to tell you. The Flats thrived before it was built, and there are plenty of reasonable alternatives for people getting down there today. Taking an Uber from a parked car or train stop works quite well; don't knock it till you try it. And as for steep hills, I've seen plenty of people walking in nice clothes in hilly cities like Georgetown, Boston, San Francisco, LA etc, and they manage to make it work.
  20. ^lol, right you are.
  21. That's true, but there are still viable alternatives than the train line. Uber (without surge) is $5-$6 from Tower City to the East Bank Flats apartments. Add another dollar for every additional passenger, and it becomes a very cheap and viable option. Tower City is .8 miles to the East Bank Flats apartments. That isn't such a bad walk at all. It would be nice to have a more operable train line, but I've just never understood all the outcry. If they had built the waterfront line properly and didn't rush it for the Centennial, then I could see it being a loss - but as it is, the line isn't all that useful even when it is running optimally.
  22. This is pretty damn exciting; I believe it will fill the last two major lots (save for one empty corner). That wasteland along LSD is such an eyesore. https://chicago.curbed.com/2017/6/26/15866032/chicago-development-news-magellan-future-phase-lake-shore-east More than 2,000 residential units and nearly 900 hotel rooms planned for Lake Shore East. F yeah! It'll be good to get some new neighbors here (I work in the area).
  23. I think top golf would be awesome for that area, though perhaps not that specific location. It eats up a lot of space, brings in more revenue, and diversifies the general theme of only restaurants and condos/apartments, and feasibly attracts other businesses.
  24. Park somewhere cheap and uber the rest. Sometimes that makes a world of difference.
  25. No way in hell that bill passes and becomes law.
