  1. We used to walk down Conover Court to get to the Lawson's at W 89th and Madison in Cleveland.
  2. That looks exactly like the neighborhood in Avon Lake where my parents bought their first house in the 50s. I would be interested to hear what you find out about the racial element. Was the adjoining section of Dayton predominantly African American? Keep up the good work Jeffrey.
  3. Yay Jeff! I will read it more carefully later, but as usual, good job.
  4. Jmeck -- Excellent contribution, as always.
  5. Thanks for reminding me how much I love Cleveland. Great shots, nice work.
  6. Jeffrey, As I have become acquainted with Dayton through your excellent posts, I have noticed that empty quarter, and wondered about it. Keep up your excellent work, and thank you for sharing it with us. Is there a similar reason why I hear less about Trotwood on these forums than southern and eastern suburbs?
  7. Fascinating study. I will have to come back and peruse it more.
  8. When you see windswept urban landscapes today, it is hard to imagine some of them were so densely settled at one time. Great job Jeffrey.
  9. Ink. Some of your best work yet. Excellent.
  10. Good to see a sign touting preservation rather than the "renewal" being done in Springfield, Ohio. Great tour as always, Rob. Thanks for taking us along. A couple weeks ago I went up to Michigan to pick up my mom. I hought of you as I drove through Fort Wane (off the 69, I was looking for a non-chain restaurant for dinner]. It was rush hour, heavy rain mixed with sleet -- not the best time to sightsee! I have only been through Michigan City on Amtrak. Is the shoreline there nice, or is it dominated by smokestacks? Any city with Lake Michigan at its doorstep should capitalize on an asset most cities can only dream of. Again, thanks for the tour , Rob.
  11. JMeck. you are definitely one of my favorite Urbanohio posters. Thanks for the travelogue.
  12. The only thing missing. Top of the Town Restaurant. And Higbees, Halles, and May Company.
  13. I've hate to pull that old "I'm from Michigan" thing again, but 2 acres of water does not make a lake!
  14. Great shots Jeffrey, as usual. I appreciate your commentary also.
  15. I seem to remember that Cleveland was the first city to light up electrically, and the ladies complained that it put their complexions to a disadvantage ...
  16. Stockton and Modesto may be miserably boring, but they are not even comparable to any of the other cities on the list. The commutes are terrible, because people work in SF, and San Jose. Dry heat in summer, Sierra on one side, Coast Ranges on the other, I'd move move to either one in a minute!
  17. I 90 tore the heart out of my family's neighborhood near West Tech. (Never heard Cudell much back when I was growing up.) Isn't that enough freeway between Lakewood and Downtown? Hooray for West Shoreway Blvd.!

Hicksville is A New York City suburb on Long Island. A college friend of mine who was from there said she lived "in" Long Island.
  20. Crime has been an issue in Cleveland for years. My grandparents' house in Cudell was burglarized twice -- in the 1930s! My grandfather was involved in illegal activities in the 20s -- he patronized a bootlegger up the the block (above a storefront on Madison, accessible from the back alley: Conover Court). Homeless people were a problem, my grandmother fed "hoboes" all the time. She had an original "tramp stamp", on her sidewalk (not her backside). The preacher says: "There is nothing new under the sun." Matches: I am weird about maps too, and I believe most of us on this forum feel the same way. Don't ever worry about cluttering a thread with maps! Keep up the good work!
  21. 1138 to 1526 = 388 years.

Arkansas also contains Weiner, and Smackover.
  23. Great study, Jeffrey. Were the churches in bad shape when they were pulled down?
