Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
conovercourt replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentAre you a good swimmer? Canada is across Lake Erie from Ohio. You will have to go to Detroit and head South, or to Niagara Falls and head West. Since 9/11, travel to Canada has tightened up. Passport is helpful, but you have to show US citizenship. Ease or difficulty depends a lot on the individual border guard. I've had a-holes on the American side, but not crossing into Canada. Leave your stash at home ...

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
conovercourt replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentFour words come to my mind when it comes to Dayton music: Isley Brothers Ohio Players As for all things Michigan: learn the difference between Univ. of Mich and Michigan State. Only hate things maize and blue related. Some of your fellow forumers have divided loyalties (The Pope and myself included. {side note to the Pope: Will L.B. Patterson ever forgive me?}) November 5th? Someone recommend a place for her to buy a parka ... And a side note on religion: Central Ohio has traditionally had the highest per capita population of Methodists of any place in the country. Not exactly holy rollers ... ...Cleveland Native, living (Up North to you) in Arkansas.

"Michigan's 2nd Largest City"
I am a native Buckeye, raised in Michigan. Toledo feels as much Ohio to me as Dayton. This issue was decided years ago in the bloody Toledo War, Ohio won. Michigan got the Upper Peninsula as a parting gift. Rob, I wish I had your phone number when I broke down in Fort Wayne in June. I really enjoy your input on this forum. The Census Bureau recognizes only three races, white is the same as Caucasian, which includes Arabs and Irish. Cdawg ... more, please ,,,

Dayton at a crossroads
Very interesting. But what is the deal with Springfield? How come the property crime rate is so high?

Cleveland CiTiRAMA: 11 homes in Glenville neighborhood
Good for Cleveland. I am old enough to remember its rapid skid -- burning river, burning streets, burning mayor ... But now it's real estate that.s burning! Yay Cleveland!

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
PS Wimwar, Won't the new boulevard replace the current roadway?

Cleveland: Shoreway Boulevard Conversion
Fantastic! With the Rapid , and the I-90 freeway, West Side residents are well connected to Downtown. The Shoreway is redundant. Maybe Cleveland can atone for some of its sins from the destruction of West Blvd. , Lorain and other streets for I-90. Now, let's see some highrise residence towers to expand the Cleveland skyline beyond Downtown! ...dreaming in Dixie ...

Ohio Department Stores
Just checked to make sure my link worked, and discovered alot of updates at the deadmalls.com site! Check it out : three Cincinnati malls, one Dayton, and one Columbus. Your excellent additions to this website would be appreciated. certainly there are other malls you guys cruised that have seen better days. I remember when Randall Park Mall was the biggest in the world (briefly before MOA and the one in Edmonton) with eight anchor stores! Parmatown had a cineplex! The malls are accessed through mall features tab on upper left. Enjoy, and report back please ... Cleveland Westside Pride ...

Ohio Department Stores
Thanks grasscat. Macy's just bumped Goldsmiths from their Memphis area stores. My mom worked at Sterling Linder in Cleveland during WWII, and I think it was Sterling Welch&Linder. I'll call her later and check. West side Cleveland had its own dept store on W. 25th St. called Fries and Schueles.(Pronounced Freez and Sheelees) I spent many hours riding up and down the elevators until the operators got tired of me(then I'd move to the stairs). I believe I have read that Fries and Schueles is now condos. But one elevator has been preserved for a mail room. Damn Dillards, I miss Higbees. Christmas has never been the same ...

Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
Detroit has a similar sad story of an uncompleted subway plan. At least Cleveland had the Rapid! Many exciting childhood memories of getting on at W 117th and emerging in Terminal Tower or University Circle. A subway station at W 85th? Thay would have done wonders for that part of Cleveland!

Metro Cleveland: Road & Highway News
Avon Lake is my hometown. My parents moved there in the 50s. Our house predated most of Cleveland's older suburbs, though it was new at the time. Spwawl hit that neck of the woods 50 years ago! We lived off Lake, and all was developed from there to Cleveland. Avon was pretty rural though, sorry that's gone...

Fairview Park: Westgate Mall Development
This was my first enclosed mall, the most convenient to my aunt's Westside Cleveland neighborhood. It is delicious irony that these malls that pushed the decline of Downtown (Higbee's, May CO, and Halle's in my memory) are threatened by places farther out. If this subject interests you, you might enjoy www.deadmalls.com. Ohio is well represented ...
