    Another historic demolition at OSU.
  2. That house has a lot of gorgeous woodwork and potential if you can deal with the location. Don't stress about the fireplace mantles and stair railings. You can buy antique elements to fit any house at architectural salvage places. I know there is at least one large salvage store in Toledo, as well as a smaller one here in Columbus. If those don't have what you want then you can always go to Olde Good Things in Pa or Chicago. The salvage places have horrendous (ripoff) prices IMO, however when you are renovating an antique sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Another trick that has worked well for me in the past is to slip a 50 to a bulldozer driver on a demolition site when he's on his way to lunch. Most of them will look the other way for an hour or so, so take some friends and work fast. You wouldn't believe the number of houses demolished every day that have mantles, staircases, pocket doors, etc. Good luck!
  3. Yeah they are Green alright. Green motivated - liars. Checked out some stories in the lantern where Christine (sp)Poldeman was quoted as saying there's a difference between demolition and deconstruction. She went on to define demolition by saying it includes dozers and cranes, whereas deconstruction is a piece by piece method. Apparently she's not too bright, because a track hoe is part of the bulldozer family. Further, in regards to all of this "green" "deconstruction" bullcrap that they totally patted themselves on the back for last fall....Lord Hall still had furniture in most rooms, flush valves on the toilets (not cheap), drinking fountains, filing cabinets, display cases and chalk boards. Sure, of course, none of that could possibly be reused or cycled. (sarcasm) Further, the roof support system was made of fine old growth timbers the size of railroad ties. Have you ever seen what those look like when planed down and sanded? Talk about hardwood floors you can't find at Lowe's. Also destroyed were all of the original 5 panel doors, radiators, window glass, marble, stone, tile, paver style brick, cap stones, lighting, and well maintained shrubs/bushes planted at it's outside walls. All stuff that people renovating old homes would love to have, and might even haul away for free. Apparently though, that's not green (cough) enough for OSU. Bottom line. They removed nothing, and landfilled everything.
  4. Lord Demo from today. Will try to get a shot of the front on Friday. OSU is doing exactly the opposite of deconstruction, but hey, who are they accountable to besides themselves?

My heart is wetting itself. It must take a special person to get excited about these types of photos.

Here's one from my early days. I did this job with an old 5.0 megapixel Kodak, so forgive the pixelation - the lighting obviously isn't always ideal in these situations either.

Welcome to the site Matt! There are a few users on UrbanOhio that document and photograph historical or abandoned structures. I'm one of those folks and manage http://www.abandonedonline.net. Gordon manages http://queencitydiscovery.blogspot.com. Do you have a site for your photography and interests? No website. I posted on Flickr for a bit until someone used my work minus permission or credit. Also, I've not had a heck of a lot of time to spend on this hobby as of late.

Hello All, I'm new to this website, via the recommendation of a friend. My explanation for my photography goes along these lines. I used to be an architectural preservationist, and my heart was broken often-so I became an architectural photographer instead. I bought my business name, and aside from being a landlord with antique property, I also hope to continue my documentation of our architectural losses. I may be vain, yet lots of people seem to connect with my work. Here's the 1st floor hallway of Livingston Ave elementary school (Columbus) on it's final day. -Matt
