  1. Agreed. I had to look up the friars club building on google earth after I read in last month's CUF newsletter that it is slated to be torn down..and I have walked by it every day for two years. At least the area will be used, although it will be at the cost of a historic building. I imagine it will look something like Stetson Square across from UH. I think they did a nice job on that development, though it is a little too "uppity" for my tastes.
  2. I'm satisfied by projects I see all the time. Here's five that are great: I recognize a couple of these, but where are they all from?
  3. If its going to be white I hope its at least LED white and not yellowish incandescent light. I still wish they would use some sort of rgb color rotating system..like Van Wormer library on UC's campus.
  4. Im curious why they didn't choose to occupy the former CM brewery instead of the Kauffman site. Was it because it is in need of more renovation, or because the Kaufman brewery still had the lagering cellars, etc? Anyone know?
  5. When the tower is finished reds fans are really going to get a "Great American" overdose while in the stadium! You'll sit in Great American Ballpark and have QCS with its GAI sign looming overhead. People from other cities are going to think Cincinnati is run by one company! All kidding aside, they are making tremendous progress on both the tower and the banks. Both my brother who lives in West Chester and my uncle from Columbus were excited to hear what all the construction was about when we went to yesterday's game. I think interest in these projects will swell after people who attend reds games this year see all the progress being made.
  6. Yea, no argument there. Part of my frustration when I see the trolley buses is knowing that the old streetcar tracks are probably still buried in the pavement where the trolley buses run. Last year when they were re-paving West Clifton Ave, whenever they would tear up a section of pavement you could see the cobbletone street with the streetcar rails in it from when it was originally laid...much like what is in front of Music Hall. Pretty neat. I guess this particular route up west clifton didn't need an incline?

I've heard it quoted both by an english professor and online..either way someone had the opinion
  8. Just wondering...I thought the GE Genesis (P42DC) was used for the Amtrak Auto Train. Do these have any major problems?

  10. They are going to be tearing up the corry parking lot here very soon..probably spring break. I work at the Arlitt Center and a letter was sent home to parents about not being able to park there anymore when picking up their children.
  11. Looks like a student-made mural in the entrance of a middle school
  12. I was able to go on one of the 1-hour heritage tours of CUT when I was there Saturday. It was crazy thinking about how busy the place was in the 30s-40s compared to what it is now. The room that was the men's lounge is now the dinky Amtrak waiting room. The rail yard that CUT operated itself extended beyond the western hills viaduct. Our tour guide said it would take Billions of dollars to build it today, IF you could find the skill and resources. What are we spending money on today that makes taking advantage of such a gem so out of the question? Our highways aren't in amazing condition, neither are our bridges, no one is building any new airports.. Yet we are scrambling to find the money to make something happen that was booming 80 years ago? BTW, I highly recommend doing one of the CUT tours..I believe they are on the weekends at 1,2, and 3pm and they are completely free :-)
  13. Those are outdated renderings that don't reflect the changes made based on the recommendations of the Urban Design Review Board. UrbanCincy was on the scene yesterday for The Banks update at City Hall. At that meeting we were able to secure an exclusive interview, details, renderings, and upcoming tour of The Banks construction site (stay tuned). But here are the updated renderings that were directly provided to us from the Project Manager. They also provided us with two recent construction site updates: The post that I quoted above includes the updated renderings...
  14. I would love to see an urban Target in downtown, im not sure it would fit in at The Banks however. Seems like more of a Q type development to me. A Wal-Mart would definitely not fit in- theres no room for a huge nasty parking lot
  15. Does anyone know what the progress of CRP will be by the next fall? Aren't we due for a Tall Stacks this year?
  16. Aww I hoped that this was what the future would look like...I suppose I can settle http://www.citykin.com/2010/02/magic-highway-predicting-today.html I always love learning about what the future looked like to people living in different eras. I guess a lot of what was predicted in 1958 has come true, for better or worse. I hope our grandiose vision of transit in the future end up happening and that in 50 years someone won't look back and laugh.
  17. More often than not, it's appropriate to respect the historical design of a building, but i don't see this as one of those times. It's a brick facade that doesn't even have any windows. I have to agree..but I can't help but think that maybe this is the conversation they had when they took out the mural in the Gourmet Room and added that horrendous wood paneling and chandelier. In 50-100 years we may regret altering the "ugly brick wall". Just food for thought. By the way, here is a link to a slide show that the Cincinnati Preservation Association has on the hotel..gives some history and has some really sharp photos. I love the photo of the entrance. http://www.cincinnatipreservation.org/files/uploaded/Terrace_Plaza_Cincinnati.pdf
  18. Being a Cincinnatian, I would much rather see the track stop in Sharonville than have no connection to Cincinnati at all. At least it makes the train more accessible to northern Cincinnatians and Hamiltonians who would otherwise not go for driving down 75. ....just seeing the glass half full here
  19. The Cincinnati Enquirer article made it seem like everything is definite and work is going to start asap..even with a quote from Strickland saying service will start possible in a year and a half or so. Any truth to this?
  20. There have been 2 hot dog guys (that i know of) that have been working around UCs campus. One is always on Calhoun across the street from Dubois and a newer guy has been at the intersection of McMillan and Moerlein since the new quarter started. I know this because I am tempted by both of them when I walk home from class.
  21. I noticed in the second of the two pictures posted up the page that when the tower is complete it will be the third building in the skyline to have a giant great american insurance sign lit up
  22. Agreed. And i say second from the right for sure
