  1. just move the street parking out from the curb by 7 feet + requisite paint and bollards. Detroit has used this style successfully. These protected lanes are well received by cyclists and generally a joy to ride. JOY + urban cycling can happen!   2. More lakefront related, less development related.......Recently learned via an email that Pace has an idea to create a beach along the end of the e.9 pier. This would require a jetty, most likely, even though its inside the break wall. He had initially planned a floating fresh water pool, which i think was based on an implementation in Europe. He has ambitious plans to clean the water using an updated vesion of a Living Machine. I sincerely hope he can figure it out. Ice skating inside the break wall in winter would be another attractant to our Great Lake. Cleveland needs and deserves a stronger connection to its Great Lake. More places to touch and experience the water downtown would be fantastic. DId you know that we’ve destroyed 95% of lake-shore wetlands in the last 50+ years? Wetlands can be thought of as the kidneys of the watershed ecology. They filter and clean water while providing habitat for myriad plant and animal Species.

Hello Columbus (from Cleveland): I spent a few days in C-Bus for a conference my wife was attending and I must say, I had the BEST espresso and latte, this side of the Pacific NW, that these lips have ever tasted. Cafe Brioso delivered on such a high level of craft, it left my head spinning. Any knowledge on the origin of the place would be most appreciated. Columbus has it goin on!
  4. With a goal of reconnecting neighborhoods to the lakefront, what do you all think of capping the shoreway from roughly W65 to Lake Ave? Such a scenario would enable incredible connections between neighborhoods and the lakefront while continuing to expedite car traffic (ODoT loves that idea). The only thing in the way of N/S connections to the lakefront is the railroad. You'd need to construct some pretty wide tunnels under the railroad to take advantage of the expanse offered by a great lawn crossing over the Shoreway. Any idea on cost for capping such a large swath of roadway?

Re: motorized traffic in the greater Battery Park neighborhood (~W78 to ~W65) and the termination of Father Caruso at W73, Councilman Matt Zone informed me that Father Frascati, which currently terminates at W73 will be extended to W70 upon construction of the W73rd underpass. My greater priority for neighborhood, aka non-motorized, traffic is to create a neighborhood-scale connection, likely following Herman Ave, between W73 and W69 and a separate connection between W76 and W78 following Battery Park Blvd. Both rights-of-way are currently occupied by vacant land and/or parking lots, which should, in theory make development of this neighborhood connector a more easily realized project. Does anyone on this board have experience developing such projects? If so, your comments would be appreciated.

    This is an interesting discussion about zoning. Can someone create a thread solely for a discussion on CLE Zoning? I have largely understood zoning as a restriction/guideline for intended use and less as a restriction of building form, but this discussion regarding the UC/LI Hotel and Schofield Bldg seem to be about building form. My only knowledge of zoning in Cleveland that restricted form was the code adopted (but not always enforced) by Midtown Cleveland. Education on this topic would be appreciated. (at least by me)

Sweet Moses (as in Cleveland) Soda Fountain and Treat Shop opening this winter at 6800 Detroit. http://www.sweetmosestreats.com/ This place will be top shelf and a welcome addition to the neighborhood, especially great for all the youths that the eventual relocation of Near West Theater will bring.

  14. The building you are referring to is not part of the Cheerio Storefront/Apartment project. As I understand it, the current condition of the building you mention would require substantially more investment than the Cheerio Building.

    The temporary public art installation along the construction fence appears to utilize all reclaimed materials to mimic the look of a tree's leaves blowing on the wind. Quite captivating and worth a look. Would love to see this much attention paid to stalled/in-progress projects in the center city!

  22. Agreed. A system such as the one you state would be very similar to the proposed tax on storm water; for which residents can claim a credit by installing rain barrels, cisterns, permeable pavement, rain gardens, etc.

    As a separate issue; funding of road infrastructure is not as clear cut as your statement might lead some to believe. It is a far more complex issue that must take into account the impact of vehicle weight and velocity as well as the fact that most cities spend a considerable amount of their budget repairing and resurfacing roads.
  24. re: Stone Mad, I live 9 blocks away. I'd recommend trying the food during happy hour which runs from 3-7pm M-F in the front bar. For $5 or less you can try their chopped salads (w & w/o meat), their buffalo chicken tenders (grilled, not fried), and a very filling Italian sausage sandwich. They also sell a draft IPA (Brooklyn or Victory) for $3 during Happy Hour. I find the menu to be very simple and the execution to be top notch. Instead of a menu that tries to have something for everyone; they only have a few selections, but most are very well prepared and everything is made from scratch. For instance I really like the hand-made burger patty, but some complain that it is rather plain; but I like burgers when you can taste the meat! Same with the salads, which are chopped lettuces w/ chopped peppers, carrots, cauliflower, & shredded Italian cheeses; served w/ a very citrusy, light dressing that some find to be tasteless. I think it's refreshing and highlights the ingredients! The meat salad adds chunks of salami, cappicola, & prosciutto. Stone Mad doesn't have fries, but instead a large plate of hash browns that are USUALLY (this should be always) well crisped on the outside. They always have a vegetable of the day which is a simple preparation served in a portion sized large enough for two for $3. Again, a great time to sample the menu is during happy hour.

I agree w/ the thoughts of some posters that the park could be improved in terms of creating a connection between the WSM and Market Ave, but $1.5M on that alone seems to me, not only misplaced priorities, but a lot to pay for a relatively little bit of work. How many guys with sledgehammers would it take to knock down those brick walls? Of the 3 drawings here, only one shows public art. http://www.clevelandpublicart.org/projects/completed/market-square-park It's a tower that acts as a high mount for decorative lighting and a water feature at the bottom. I wholeheartedly agree we could use more water features in the City, but again, I am concerned about the expenditures on a single aspect of Ohio City; when there are several other areas of Market Square that could use improvement. IMO, Public art is at its best when it serves a function. The Blue Birds in Edgewater Hill serve the function of motivating people to explore their own own hood, but the stainless steel bus 'shelters' are nearly worthless. What's the plan for public art in Market Square? I'm unsure how it connects to local food/WSM.
