Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
^ "also, why isn't this think lit up at night? i would have thought some energy efficient lighting would have been part of the art installation. just a couple of orange, red or blue lights shining upward onto the mast would have a nice effect, imo." i agree. i wondered this for a long time and initially heard that the reason was the FAA due to the proximity to Burke. However, look at all the lights at the stadium next store, which are actually placed higher than the tips of the turbine. as i've learned the primary reason for no cool nighttime swirl effects is that lights attract bugs and bugs attract birds & bats which the big blades would then destroy. i wonder if there is a light spectrum which does not attract animals but is visible to the human eye?

another new bookstore in cleveland, Suspect Thoughts (they publish too). It's off the beaten path at Clark & W.49th owned by a couple that moved here from Oakland. They've got a 10-12 spot car park next door. Nice place on the inside and it sounds as if they we be hosting lots of events. the selection is about half queer with the rest consisting of political, occult, and other fun stuff. they've got some great t-shirts from a local printing company. be sure to check it out if you are ever in/passing through the neighborhood.

Latitude 41˚ N opened today and I had the pleasure of eating breakfast there. The space has a very warm feeling with lots of exposed brick. The menu is likely one of the most creative breakfast menus in the city. I recall pan seared oatmeal with fruit compote and crumbled bacon among the selections. They are open for breakfast, lunch, & dinner.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
the website for the Visible Voice Bookstore in Tremont is now in operation. http://www.visiblevoicebooks.com/contact.html The contact page is exemplary in that it not only shows the bus routes that serve the store, but also includes where to exit the bus and directions from the bus stop. It would be FANTASTIC to see something similar from the PD - or at least on cleveland.com

Holy Chicken indeed! I ate their wings, at full price, last sat nite. growing up as cleveland carnivores, we've all the requisite resume to be wing connoisseurs. have you honed your skills lately? i did and found the wings to hit all the high notes; hot, crispy outside, juicy inside, right-sized, saucy and the hot had a great depth of flavor. though like a trip to the spa, i like to sweat when i eat wings, though i'm sure the kitchen can accommodate my masochistic desires if prompted. also, the outside patio is a beaut, as it was in the Snicker's days. my only recommendation, which i've given to the owners, is to add a miniature golf hole or two to the patio. the panoply of features, including mature trees, water features, and elevation changes is calling out to be danced upon by those skilled with putter and ball. as for the music, i didn't hear any cher, but imo, it could use a bit less emo and bit more old school punk. btw, i'm a proud omnivore now and so am nearly as excited by the prospect of $1 vegan tacos!

CSU innovation center presents projects Thursday, September 06, 2007 Shaheen Samavati Plain Dealer Reporter The Wright Center for Sensor Systems Engineering presented its progress on seven development projects to a group of current and potential partners Wednesday. The center, which is led by Cleveland State University in collaboration with the state and several other Ohio colleges, is already working on developing technology with more than a dozen companies, including Keithley Instruments and Parker Hannifin, major players in the instruments and controls industry. Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Welcome to urbanohio Mr. Masek! It's a welcome change to have a representative from a major public institution with regional impact be so outward in announcing their presence on this public forum. Any thoughts on passing along the ideas generated here to the Citizen Advisory Board or VAC? I know that they CAB now has a Google Group, which means that it would be possible, via RSS to automatically send updates from this thread to the Google Group. Also, to all UrbanOhioans, please note that RTA's Citizen Advisory Board now has a meeting schedule with agendas and minutes posted at > http://www.riderta.com/CAB/ This is welcome news indeed!

Near West Coffee and Tea is owned and operated by the the same folks that own Near West Wood Works which provides a place for the mentally ill to move back into the mainstream. http://www.wcpn.org/specials/mentalhealth/features/0429woodworks.html That being said, I would have to agree with MapBoy, their hot brewed beverages are nothing great, BUT they do have wonderfully rich and sweet toddy, which is liquid gold on a day like today. Also, lots of local art on the walls.

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
I actually really like this idea as well. Of course, it would require finding someone to finance it, but it would probably be about the best thing that Urban Ohio could do to "get the word out" beyond this website. it could also, of course, contain the "Urban Ohio Report." I second this idea. It seems to fall directly in line with a thread that was started earlier this year about the future of urban ohio. If we want to be an agent of change, for the betterment of downtown and her neighborhoods, as many folks on this forum do, then we need to get the word out on the street, in front of people's faces as the perspectives we discuss on this forum are not being presented elsewhere. A targeted paper based version of UO will get people talking and perhaps get folks to realize what an INCREDIBLE opportunity downtown Cleveland presents. If anyone wants to push further with this idea, I'd certainly enjoy pursuing it off line. Perhaps we could all meet somewhere dwntwn? In regards to financing it, I'd guess we could create the content in our 'spare' time and perhaps utilize our respective work places to each print off a 'few' copies.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Permeable concrete enables a more elegant solution to NEO's nasty problem of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) then the one being employed by our regional sewer district, NEORSD. A CSO occurs when a big a** thunderstorm rocks the city with massive amounts of rain, which due to many impermeable surfaces, namely roof tops and pavement, cannot infiltrate the ground and is instead directed into the sewer system. In the case of a large thunderstorm, the sewer system cannot handle the massive volume of run-off water, so it overflows into the sanitary sewers (residential and industrial waste) due to how our rather ancient sewer system was constructed. This massive volume of water has no where to go, so it is released, UNTREATED, into streams, rivers, and lakes. This of course is one reason why you should not go swimming in Lake Erie after a thunderstorm! http://www.epa.gov/weatherchannel/stormwater.html < Stormwater Run-off http://www.epa.gov/nbh/html/glossary.html < CSO So, if pavement can be built in a way that enables water to infiltrate back into the ground, ala permeable pavement, then the possibility of CSO events is reduced. Pavement run-off can also be reduced through the use of bioswales and/or retention ponds. Run-off from impermeable roof tops can be reduced by employing green roofs, rain-barrels, & rain gardens. CSU installed their first permeable pavement behind the book store as a test project with Fenn College of Engineering. Fenn students installed all sorts of measuring equipment under the pavement to measure how the pavement reacts to rain and perhaps more importantly, snow and ice. I believe RTA has the largest permeable pavement installation at their Parmatown Transit Center. One can learn lots by looking up info on Low Impact Design (LID) which I often refer to as functional landscaping. I for one, wish more retail and housing projects in NEO would employ functional landscaping as a way of creating aesthetic beauty that serves a critical function. http://www.epa.gov/weatherchannel/stormwater.html < EPA on LID http://www.lid-stormwater.net < the State of Maryland pioneered LID

IMHO, I think it's fantastic that Steve Lit has his own blog! I predict we will begin to see a different side of Mr. Litt in his blog based writings.
