Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
I heard from an employee @ CSU's Office of the University Architect at a recent Design Review meeting @ CLV City Hall that CSU has created a master plan for street furniture and lighting that is awaiting implementation. The plan includes bicycle parking, light poles, benches, and other such functional infrastructure. Has anyone heard anything more about this?

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Tunnels leading to Edgewater Park are scheduled for a major renovation http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/02/west_76th_street_pedestrian_tu.html By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer February 14, 2010, 1:00AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tom Beecher was walking to his West 80th Street home after his first day on a new job when he was struck by a westbound freight train while crossing the West 76th Street railroad tracks. The 30-year-old man's skull was fractured and his right leg severed below the knee, according to a story in The Plain Dealer on March 10, 1909. After subsequent train accidents in the area in which others were seriously injured or killed, the Lake Shore Railroad closed the street north of the tracks. Cleveland then built pedestrian tunnels under the tracks and the parallel Bulkley Road, which later became the West Shoreway. Nearly 100 years later, the West 76th Street tunnels, which provide access to Edgewater Park, are getting a long-overdue makeover. story continues @ http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/02/west_76th_street_pedestrian_tu.html

^Lo Conti got mixed up with that guy from the Jigsaw saloon, Phil Lara; which resulted in bad blood and massive financial difficulties. The Cleveland Scene covered it pretty well over a series of articles of which this is but one: http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/the-jig-is-up/Content?oid=1534945

The BEER Thread
I've been emailing Sam McNulty to convince him of the merits of operating a small brewing supply store in the soon to open Market Garden Brewery on W. 25. I'm figuring a 10'X10' area would be plenty of space and a great connection to the west side market stands next store. Perhaps it could have it's own entrance and be open during market hours? Sure would be convenient and get me brewing more often.... Another good home brew supply store is JW Dover on Detroit, way out in Westlake. They have a good selection + a wine tasting cave and a variety of old soda tanks for kegging. www.jwdover.com Anyone in NEO up for trading homebrew?

An Afternoon in Downtown Columbus
Really nice pictures of C-Bus; such a different city than Cleveland (in a good way). I'm wondering about the cobble stone street shown in the photo that KingFish highlighted. Is that new or revealed? And do you know who made the decision to go in that direction and if this is happening elsewhere in the city? Thanks.

Sandusky-Erie Islands: Random Development and News
This is not Cleveland, but Port Clinton; 50+ miles west as the crow flies... Lakefront Preserve a gem for Port Clinton On November 18th, officials from Port Clinton will proudly cut the ribbon celebrating the acquisition of 25 parcels along the Lake Erie shore. Known as the Lakefront preserve, the land includes over 12 acres of coastal wetlands, a marsh and a small beach. The land is located on a stretch of highway known as the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail of the National Scenic Byways Program. The city of Port Clinton had financial help from many sources, including the Ohio Office of the Trust for Public Land, Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Fund, and the Coastal Estuarine Land Conservation Program--part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management. The Black Swamp Conservancy will hold a conservation easement over the preserve. Local politicians devoted three years to planning and working out the details. The Lakefront Preserve will fulfill a number of functions. Marshland acts as a natural flood zone as well as habitats for many wildlife species. The preserve is located in both the Atlantic and Mississippi flyover migratory bird routes. And hopefully the new preserve will bring in eco-tourists. Plans are underway for the construction of boardwalks and removal of Phragmites australis, an invasive plant that chokes off native species. Ohio and Ottawa County play a significant role in conservation. Lake Erie has over 855 miles of shoreline, with 260 miles bordering Ohio and 100 miles in Ottawa county. Only 48.9 miles (16%) of Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline are accessible to the public. Port Clinton is bordered by both Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. Port Clinton is also promoting Clearwater Preserve. Located on Sandusky Bay just south of the Lakefront Preserve, Clearwater Preserve has 700 acres primed for development, including marinas, golf courses, hotels, shops and restaurants. Geis and Coyne families float plans for technology center on Euclid Avenue By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer November 18, 2009, 5:52PM http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2009/11/geis_and_coyne_families_float.html Below is the most disturbing paragraph from the article: Without financial assistance, Geis said the tech center would need to charge rents of about $20 per square foot in a market where tenants are willing to pay only $12 to $15. The disparity is due partly to high land costs and partly to the project design, which calls for a more suburban-style, single-story building surrounded by hundreds of parking spots. That style of building does not mesh with zoning guidelines, which call for multiple stories and a range of uses on that portion of Euclid Avenue. Geis said he is trying to compete with suburban properties and provide suburban amenities, like safe and ample parking, in an urban environment.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
not sure if this fits into the current discussion, but it DOES answer the question posed in the thread. the very first dire straits album, self titled, deserves re-listen after re-listen. mark knopfler's guitar, vocals, and songwriting are absolute beauty. it's as if he and the guitar are one. i bought it near the end of summer at a record exchange in lakewood (CLV) and have been listening to on a near daily basis since. in regards to new music, i've been finding more value in going backwards in time.... bill withers first two albums provide tasty musical hooks and a songwriting theme that i'm guessing is indicative of being a black man in the early 70's.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
the lay out and feel of theinterior has not really changed. they added another bathroom for women, updated the light fixtures, updated the booths and some of the bar stools, added another pinball machine and added a dart board. the old sign with the painted image of the dog was owned by the previous owner of the happy dog.

I think they are currently using the Tofurkey veg sausage, but are looking to find a local chef to concoct a veg dog. IMO, the dogs are big enough to share and if you are still hungry, you can order another with different dressings...

Cleveland: Richman Bros. Site Re-Development
I worked with a couple other orgs in town to propose a project for due north of this building, on Luther, for the Re-Imagining Cleveland grant solicitation. I spent some time in (what's left of) this neighborhood and was impressed by the tight-knit feel of this neighborhood.

I too like the Malley's that sell ice cream and chocolate, ala the classic Malley's in Lakewood, that place is a trip! That being said, I wish Malley's could create a concept like the Gibson's Candy in Oberlin. http://oberwiki.net/Gibson's_Food_Market_and_Bakery Apparently, a bakeshop called BonBon bakery will be opening in the space behind Maschke's gallery space. Not sure what they will be baking, but the proprietor is currently baking pastries at the Ritz..
