  1. I would much prefer to see a small market, rather than another restaurant. IMO, we gots plenty of restaurants, but walkable/bicyclable grocery options are basically Save-A-Lot, StockYard Meats (thanks 'X') and the Vietnamese Grocery next to Minh Ahn + the Sat. Farmer's market. I'm not a big fan of the Arab grocery on Detroit in the West 90's; their produce looks good from the window but the selection is not all that great. So how bouts a market w/ basics and maybe high end wine & beer in the pwrhouse space? i'm guessing that with only 40+ units built-out, there is not enough walk-up demand to justify it. Thoughts??
  2. I'm nearly 2 meters tall so I feel your pain. In the future I'd reccomend sitting all the way at the top where there are 7-10 seats w/ nothing in front. Another 10-15 similar seats can be found on the edges of the theater. Another way to look at somewhat uncomfortable seats is that they keep you awake and attentive; great for independent & foreign films! ;> ) Liquor license is pending; my guess would be within a week or two at most.
  3. No building was removed, but the area, formerly a grass & gravel parking lot, was re-'paved' w/ a permeable surface. not sure what the material is though.
  4. they will have an all veg hot dog too...
  5. there is a proposal to transform an area of the lakefront in Lorain (near the mouth of the Black river) into a Dude Ranch of sorts where visitors can experience outdoor sports like walleye fishing, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Good idea or no? Me kinda likey. http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/09/29/news/mj1679211.txt#story_comments
  6. an interesting argument against light and heavy rail, that identifies many costs, but not all of them. (this article was posted as a comment rebuttal to the need for commuter rail in Ohio on the Columbus Dispatch website) http://virginianewssource.com/wallyerb/blog1.php/2009/08/17/light-rail-behind-the-times how would you respond to this line of thinking?
  7. Just curious, what are the eating/drinking places w/ seating you are thinking of around the Capitol that meet your criteria of being within a couple blocks? ALREADY OPEN -Gypsy Bean Coffee/Cafe, across the street -Rincon Criollo, same block -Luxe Kitchen + Lounge, 2 blocks west -Stone Mad Tavern, 2-3 blocks north (seating here is pretty expansive, btw) -City Grill Bar, 1 block east NOT YET OPEN -Wine Bar + Cafe, 1 block north Based on the above, what types of places would you recommend? Thank you for your input.
  8. This is great news - a new K-12 school serving downtown cleveland and likely beyond, is on the fast track to open on the Cleveland State Univ campus via the Cleveland Plain Dealer http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1253349122110300.xml&coll=2 New Cleveland State University President Ronald Berkman makes first major personnel move Friday, September 18, 2009 Janet Okoben Plain Dealer Reporter "(CSU President) Berkman also has asked two current administrators to help speed along his priorities of establishing a K-12 public school on campus and bringing in more grants. Julian Earls, an executive-in-residence at CSU's business college since 2006 and retired director of the NASA Glenn Research Center, will work with the Cleveland School District to establish the new campus school, Berkman said. 9. the phoenix coffee in lakewood (the only phoenix not owned by phoenix) is transitioning to a larger space, next door i believe, and a different sort of coffee shop that is more of a cafe.......a cafe that only serves vegan & vegetarian fare.
  10. RTA is in process working with the vendor on a hardware and software upgrade to the new fareboxes.
  11. there is no doubt, if cattle were raised only on pasture, there would be far far less meat available. this would likely be a very very good thing for all Americans, it terms of health & wellness. in the 70's it took 7 years to raise a calf to slaughter weight (100 lbs to 1200+ lbs); it now takes 14 months. that is largely due to industrial containment and 'force' feeding; profit focused [capitalism] solutions to a biological constraint.

it's definitely the best sci-fi i've seen in a long long time and one of the best movies. i do like both the way it was filmed and the socio-political commentary. however, the best part may in fact be the sly black humour that pervades the film. this is what you get when UK directors make sci-fi; serious, but not too serious. one of my favorite scenes ( i let out a big belly laugh) was the cake scene @ the surprise birthday party - classic! has everyone that's seen D9 also taken the time to watch Blomkamp's short, 'Alive in Joburg'? Definitely worth a viewing...
  13. The methane is tied directly to over production, yes PRODUCTION of meat as well as what the cows are eating, largely corn; a food not meant to be eaten by ruminant (multiple stomachs to break down cellulose, ala goats, sheep, cows, alpaca, etc) animals and therefore a cause for excess gas.
  14. lets open the flood gates on 'green' how about a 'green' hamburger? what the *^$ does that look like in terms of farm to table? for one, the cow wouldn't be fed corn meal for 90% of its life - it's simply unsustainable.....! chef sawyer is aware of the issue and is experimenting with solutions. this is only the tip of the iceberg. although i'm no veg, i strongly agree with MapBoy's assertion that a Green restaurant should provide low-impact veg options on the menu. not sure why X got so testy......
  15. Well I suppose the reason (the point) is that the edges of both the 'real' river and 'real' lake have been industrialized and no longer reflect their natural form; nor our biophillic connection to it. however, we now possess the technology (a bit of an oxymoron i know) to construct natural ecosystems in the form of constructed wetlands, streams, etc.
  16. ^ ¿is Eton in UrbanOhio?
  17. how did you order your burger (temp/doneness)?
  18. Healthy wetlands actually reduce mosquito populations. http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/reg/mosquitoes.pdf That being said, I love the image of canals in the city, especially the idea of ice skating on one, ala Rideau in Ottawa.
  19. This is my favorite image from the plan. Why? Because it reinforces our connection to the water. I wonder if it could be constructed in a way that would be pleasing aesthetically but also function as a constructed wetland/stream to filter water run-off. It does not appear to connect into the lake, so I'm unsure if this makes sense.
  20. a bottle bill in ohio would definitely help in keeping much of this litter off of streets, highways, parks, etc. http://www.bottlebill.org/
  21. the new student center is going to feature an outdoor fireplace, which i think is a really swell idea!

If you are a cyclist in Cleveland, especially one who uses your bicycle for transportation, as opposed to recreation, I am seeking your input at the following meeting: RTA's Transit Improvement Advisory Committee (TIAC) on Friday, Aug 7 from 8:30-10AM @ RTA's Main Office, 1240 West 6th Street in the Warehouse District. August's TIAC meeting will be dedicated to developing a priority list of specific bicycle accommodations that should be included in the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit system. If you'd be so kind, please PM me if you can attend. pEACE>
  23. the leather shop will be re-opening in the Gordon Square arcade
  24. MTS> they are installed at both E12 and Detroit Ave (GSAD) and will either be retrofitted or replaced at GSAD DocBroc>the issues are numerous: 1) very very poor mounting (note following close-up photo) http://www.flickr.com/photos/56837381@N00/3745265123/ the bolt comes up through the ground and the nut can easily be removed, with a long enough wrench. 2)the racks can easily be shaken, almost to the point that one feels as if they could be yanked right out of the ground. try doing that to the street furniture that was installed. you are correct in stating that the number of bolts (incorrectly installed no less) are a large part of the problem. for a rack that can accommodate 4 bikes, 2 bolts is questionable. for comparison, the standard Cleveland U, which can accommodate 2 bikes, has 8 bolts. http://www.flickr.com/photos/56837381@N00/3746068162/in/photostream/ 3)the tubular steel is rather thin; which also does not instill confidence. as a cyclist, these characteristics do not inspire confidence; IOW, would i feel secure locking my bicycle there while shopping or visiting someone?
