  1. I'm not so sure I agree with that. Cincinnati has Red River Gorge in its back yard, which is an awesome place for hiking/backpacking. The Smoky Mountains are also fairly close to Cincy (compared to Cleveland), and Lakes Cumberland and Norris are large, warm lakes that are great for skiing, boating, tubing, etc. I guess Cleveland might have better access to skiiking, but that might be splitting hairs. Snowshoe in WVA is decent, and not too far from Cincy, but for real skiing, Utah/Colorado or (to a lesser extent) New England are the only places in the US. Lake Erie is a great resource, but I've always gotten the impression that it was not the best lake for water activities due to pollution and lack of lake oriented development on the shore. Compare whatever Ohio has on Lake Erie with the awesome little lakeside towns in Northern Michigan, and there's really no contest. Put in Bay seems trashy and cheap, IMO. ^ well in that case you have gotten the wrong impression from somewhere. there are plenty of family oriented summer cottage towns all along the lake outside of the urban areas that are similar to what n. michigan offers. does erie have sleeping bear dunes? no. does it have the oceanfront 'stacks' that the pac nw has? no either. but at the same time does n. mich have cedar point? again no. different places - se la vie. also, even tho we can all agree pib is what it is, thats exactly why clevelanders take summer homes in kellys and pelee islands, which my family did for years. I removed the part about the gourges as I am more going to respond to the comment about PIB, islands, etc. PIB, in recent years at least, does not seem nearly as trashy as it used to. Ohh, that element is still there and you can definitely find if you are looking for it but there are more bars and winery's that attract a different crowd. You just have to go off the main strip a little bit. Still I wouldn't exactly say that it is a family weekend place. One great thing about the Islands of Ohio is that you really can find exactly the island you are looking for depending on what you want to do. Want an entertainment/party hotspot - PIB/South Bass Island. More laid back with a cottage and resort feel - Middle Bass Island. Family Friendly Island activities from Camping/Hiking/Biking to festivals and street fairs - Kelley's Island. Also, the shores of Marblehead and Catawba also have a lot going on. Growing up in Cincinnati I never even knew that these places existed. To me then, if I were expecting to find a resort/beach town I would have been looking more in NC/SC/Savannah area. Ohio really has a lot, you just may have to look harder for it as there isn't nearly as much publicity as some other places. Ok, now to keep this on topic. If I were to move away from Ohio it would probably be to Denver. I love to ski and would love to live in a true mountain town that has a ski resort; a real town like Telluride or even Aspen just not something like Vail, which is the Disney World of ski towns. But those are so d@mn far from civilazation for the most part that I don't know if I would enjoy it as much. Although Telluride is an amazing place, summer or winter.
  2. I would not be surprised at all if the Brown start 0-6. There are too many rookies that are going to have to start, and the start of the schedule is too rough. I think they win the next 3 after that though, just enough to get everyone excited before falling apart as the aforementioned rookies hit a wall. The later bye week will help, but not enough. 6-10 is the best they can do I think.
  3. Huron Square Deli, or something like that. Also, there is Sammy's Grill in the Holiday Inn Express Building. If you are coming in off Euclid it is past the check in desk. Cash Only, though I think all the one's we've mentioned are too.
  4. I did catch the first half of that game and noticed the extra large crowd. They play in the Seahawks football stadium and normally cover the top seating deck. This still provides about 42,000 seats which they sell out every game. I guess for the LA Galaxy they decided to remove the upper deck tarps. The U.S. Northwest (Seattle & Portland) and Canada (Vancouver & Toronto) are really setting the standard in MLS. Don't forget Montreal. There are 5 teams that average over 20K a game o far this season. Seattle, Portland, Montreal, Houston, and LA. Those last three are new to the league, and Competed for the championship last year respectivly. So for them a healthy attendance like that should be expected. It's the other 3 that are right below 20K that show the leagues strength (Toronto, Vancouver and KC). Toronto is having a terrible season too. The Crew are finally getting some people in the seats it seams. As of today they are +22% from last year. Hopefully more and more seats can get filled as they are still only at a 73% usage rate. http://mlsattendance.blogspot.com/
  5. RIP Kirk Urso. While details are sparse right now, this sounds like it could be a true tragedy.
  6. ^ They really need to come out of these next two games with 4, if not all 6, points. After that they have LA and Houston, and with the Galaxy rounding into form those are going to be hard matches to end up with points. Still upset that Gruenebaum didn't get onto the All-star team. He has single handedly, sometimes literally, kept the Crew in the race for a post season spot.
  7. Business travelers usually cannot plan ahead. And they still either have to wake up before dawn or spend for a New York hotel. The only way the plane becomes competitive with the overnight train is if either the flight goes supersonic or the hotel goes for $150 or less. This is very, very true. There is a significant commuter flight culture, just look at any Mon-Thur flight prices, that is where airlines make their money. Point in case the wife was just informed yesterday that she needs to go to Philly next week, only Tue-Wed, flights from CLE->PHL nonstop were near $1,200!! 1 layover was closer to $600. All this was on United. She eventually choose to go US Air from CAK->PHL, also @$600, but nonstop. NYC is pretty much a similar situation. Now imagine if there was an overnight sleeper car option.
  8. Keep in mind that the length of that trip is roughly the same as Cleveland to Buffalo. Comparing that to going Cleveland to NYC is just way too long. That is one of the biggest problems Amtrak faces. The USA is enormous, which has advantages and disadvantages. Boston to NYC is much more analogous to your international connection and probably closer timewise.
  9. It does seem strange though that they would publicly say they don't know of any plans yet if it has been announced. Ehh, not really. If they are still working through all of the details (MRN, Planning & Landmark Commisions, etc) they may not want to announce it yet. Each company will have different policies on how the public is informed about such things. Twitter, while great at interacting, isn't really the place to make a statement like that. Press releases allow for much more control over what message is being delivered.
  10. CLE Clothing Company was putting up a nice big sign today. It's their cross bones logo and fits in with everything else on the street.

My wife and I went there for our 1 year anniversary. We stayed on Seneca Lake, at Magnolia B&B which you can almost throw a stone either north or south and hit another winery. There are also some interesting state parks in the area, specifically Watkins Glen. And I second lewarctj's recommendation for their tourist website. A lot of good information and maps of the area.
  12. Took a walk by there yesterday, and there are still a good number of trees there. The patio seating area is still surrounded, I think the area where Lizardville's patio is going will be more exposed. Hopefully they will do something to provide a wind block.
  13. The bigger problem is securing the access to the rooms. Even just on the 1st floor of the Euclid side. I would imagine that this is being done more with the intent of bringing in some larger tenants to those spaces. On the west side there are 3-5 continuous storefronts that are now empty. Opening that space up, along with a dedicated apartment base, could entice a tenant to open shop.
  14. The old Sushi 86 place has a new "coming soon" sign in their window. This time for an Indian place, although the name escapes me now. It was supposed to be redeveloped into a Southern foods style lace, but that obviously never happened. Hopefully this will get done and give us a new spot that isn't just another sandwich place.
  15. Maybe some possibility for residential? It's currently 40% vacant... I think the 1717 E9th, East Ohio Gas Building, will be the litmus test for doing modern office building to residential conversion. That building is completely empty though so would not face the same challenges as a 60% occupied (by office dwellers no less) building. Anything is possible with the right amount of money though. MTS how bout you through a garage sale for some of your Jimmy Choo' or whatever and add another apartment building to your portfolio.
  16. I wouldn't be surprised though if there were a lot of intrastate tourism dollars flowing around. We have a boat in Sandusky and I am sure that if we were to take it over to Put In Bay or Kelley's Island we would be counted as tourists. Finding out what is driving people to certain places from out of state is going to be much more beneficial than people instate. Although if you go south of Columbus and mention that there are islands in Ohio they will give you the dumbest look ever (I know I was one once).
  17. The idea is to expand the Short-term garage so that it is able to meet demand of what are currently two separate garages. The presentation doesn't get into the cost for parking, but I would imagine it will be more expensive than the long term garage is currently. Here is the link to the presentation: Master Plan Presentation. It is pretty informative even if it is just a slideshow.
  18. Those had been there for 2-3 months now. I think whoever is leasing that place and operating under the Cadillac Ranch name has know the Assets were getting sold and thus made the needed changes to stay ahead of any cease and desist order. The covering of the caddy looks terrible. Its even worse in person. It would honestly look better if the particle board was put up on the two sides and painted black. Still terrible, but at least you wouldn't still be able to see the car.
  19. They do plan to remove a garage, but I think it is the Long Term, not Short Term garage Also, they state that the LT garage is past it's useful life and has been rehabbed once already (not sure how old some garages are downtown, but 43 years doesn't seem that old). However, they are also planning to add 2 floors to the short term garage and expand it in the future. The expansion is questionable to happen as it is in the last years of the master plan.
  20. BTW, all the steel is now gone from the former K line sign. Hopefully something will be reveled soon regarding this space. It is quite big, even though the frontage isnt that much.
  21. I had thought that was just one space. The MRN/Rosetta Building is a actually in between that one and the PNC Tower. The recent article on converting some floors to apartments identified it as the New England Building (or something like that). This building, The Guardian Building, is actually owned by Westcore Properties. They appear to be trying to find lease for the property. Although they don't seem to be trying too hard.
  22. I saw that, however I had just thought he was mistaken. The sliding doors have said "Cowboy Rock" for the past 5 months or so, just assumed it was some updated marketing or something. I walk by this everyday, but never really stop and look at it ... mostly because it is as djunior said above.
  23. Would TC even need building permits displayed on those storefronts? I can't recall them being posted whenever another mall redoes a store, but never looked either.
  24. I'd like to see that progress turn the corner by Potbelly and go down East 6th Street. There's some empty retail spaces to be filled there. And then we could start a new thread! :) Theres really only one spot that is empty. Right next to the Baker Building entrance. Of course this is excepting the monstrosity that is the old NCC office (Garfield or Guardian I think) building that I believe is a possibility to become apartments. Right now the whole thing with the exception of the PNC branch has been mothballed.
  25. The entrance structure where K-Line used to be is being removed. Have to imagine that this would only be done if something would be moving in.
