  1. A very recent article from Fortune talks about some of the headwinds that OpenTable is facing. Could be interesting times for them, especially if they get a worthwhile competitor. OpenTable's rise and fall is a cautionary tale January 3, 2012: 8:50 AM ET OpenTable is a reminder for investors eager for a piece of a hot tech IPO: It doesn't take a stock bubble on the scale of the 90s dot-com mania for investors to lose money on a supposedly hot Internet stock. By Kevin Kelleher, contributor FORTUNE -- Nothing lasts forever, but the speculative momentum that can drive up tech stocks is especially fleeting. Just ask OpenTable http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/01/03/opentable-rise-and-fall/
  2. I concur and it frustrates me to no end. It's flippin Jan. 6th and its flippin 50 degrees!! there are so many things wrong there. If winter is delayed anymore they can finish the roof and just start growing grass on the new mall immediatly :(
  3. A bigger thing that is lost is just how much business Southpark is taking away. My wife's mother grew up and still lives in North Royalton. She used to go to Parmatown for all shopping needs, well most needs. But once Southpark was built it was closer to get there than to Parmatown and thus that is where they began shopping. Most of the homes (terrible homes btw) have more disposable income in N. Royalton than Parma so losing those dollars significantly hurts the ability of the mall to thrive. While the wife and I were on the subject we were brainstorming ways to repurpose the mall and one that seemed interesting was as a sports facility. Parma has a cr@p-ton of sports leagues, probably enough leagues for every resident to be on 3 different teams. I personally think the support columns for the building would hinder most uses, but if it could be done I think it might be able to work.
  4. I'm cautiously optimistic about the idea, but I don't want our resources to be lining the pockets of some Texans sitting comfortably in Houston far from the environmental risks. This needs to be an Ohio-centric process. However if there are no Ohio companies that have any esxpertise in running these type of wells then likely we will be getting out of state companies running them. That seems most likely. Hopefully, when ODNR mortgages all of their parkland they can write in certain stipulations regarding local talent. I would imagine that if a good majority some of these wells begin daily production then the out of state company will bring in white collar staff to support all the blue collar on the well site. Time will tell how this works out though.
  5. ^ Somtheing like that really does need to be done to the E9th st bridge. For the most part it is the gateway to the water front already, but there is nothing to indicate that this is the case. Ideally the best way to make E9th a better entrance would be to make the shoreway a boulevard completly, with just the Main Ave bridge from W6th to W25th being left highway like. However, seeing as it is impossible to do that in a reasonable fashion on the west side of the bridge I think the only chance would be when the road just falls apart in 50 years.
  6. Like the concept. And that area is really devoid of restaurant options, besides the Gallaria food court. Speaking of the food court, they mention an outdoor patio and the only one I'm aware of is the one right in front of the food court. Granted it is a pretty damn big patio and they could likely partition it, I'm just not sure where else it is accessible from besides the food court. Also, until the Westin is complete and the MM/CC is up and running this place would be very hit and miss in the evenings. The 1717 building really should be turned into apartments.

Its in these little details that the shortened training camp hurt. FT are likely beginning end of practice items, but when all of practice has to be spent understanding the coaching system and where to be on the floor these little things get left out. There just wasn't enough time to do a training camp properly. It's OK though the Cavs should not be trying to be great this year, and we lose a few because of that fine. Better draft slot :)
  8. ^ There should only be one bar... its just cold not super cold
  9. The one thing that worries me (and I've never been to Table 45, but this is a general observation anyway) is the "5 pages packed ..." comment. Really I think that there should be no more than 3 pages to a menu. Cover, appetizers and sides, and Entrees (with a separate dessert menu). Too many options breeds problems in a kitchen. The fewer options there are typically the better the food comes out as the kitchen can better focus on a smaller set of items. Table 45 is my fav restaurant. (explains why you probably wouldn't like it - LOL) You people on the wrong side of the river, really need to broaden your horizons! LOL Anyone who is questioning the menu, might want to check the place out. Trust me it is one of the things I regret, not necessarily that we are on the West Side, but that we are so far on the west side. Getting DT is fine, but over to Coventry, UC, or LI is something of a pain. In addition I just found out that the closest National Bookstore (which when purchasing books as gifts makes sense in case they need to be returned) is in Westlake. There is nothing over here south of Berea (they only get included because I really like Cornerstone Brewery)!!

  11. okay, at the risk of sounding catty, isn't this basically a "demotion" for him? In on air status probably. But I would imagine he took it because he would "be the Gannett-owned Cleveland station's managing editor for evening news." There are only a few national top posts to fill, and based on how he seemed to be bouncing around time slot wise, ie. doing evening and morning show, it is a good idea to diversify.
  12. This is what happened to a friend of mine. He had a GPS unit stolen even though it was in the glove box. They did the smash and grab because they saw some wires hanging on the rear view mirror I think, although he wires were actually for a set of ear buds and not the GPS. He wasn't too upset though as he was looking for a new GPS anyway, I think that one was actually broken. This happened on Chester between 9th and 12th about a year ago. Obviously, not a lot of eyes on the street there.
  13. I think I read in an article on TC in the PD (can't remember which one or what it was even about) but I do recall that FCE stated they were keeping most leases on a 1 year limit so that they could gauge what the Casino added to overall traffic. I would imagine this is why you are getting the Dollar store and other lower tier shops. Hopefully the store mixes will have changed by this time next year.
  14. I would say that the 2025 Ontario building would fit the bill http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16937716/2025-Ontario-St-Cleveland-OH/ Althought that seems too high a profile location, although not a spot typical thought about. That was actually exactly what I was thinking, but as we never seem to mention it I left that out. Infilling this building, and the building next to it where Sushi 86 was, will really help that portion of the block. And offset the loss at the southern end with FFB becoming Tilted Kilt. FFB was closed with a sign stating that they will reopen as Tilted Kilt. I had thought they were staying open a little longer.

  16. Then please explain to me the reason Cleveland and Seven Hills are splitting tax revenues? WHY do the cities need an agreement if a company moving/growing specifically and openly wants to come/be in Cleveland? They are splitting revenue because the agreement to do so had been previously entered. If it is on the books then there is no point fighting it. Besides I'm sure it was entered into at a time when Cleveland was loosing more companies than it was bringing in. Although a quick google search did not yield anything, I would have to imagine there is more to the agreement than just the Tax Sharing portion. It probably doesn't matter what the companies intentions for moving were. They could have moved because the Seven Hills Mayor cheated in a golf game with the CEO of AmTrust. Irregardless there is an agreement between the cities that predated the move.
  17. Would never work. Reread your post. ;) Most if not all outlet malls, Las Vegas excluded, are located away from high priced CBD buildings. Because the product cost at retail is very low, they must keep their overhead low. this is why most "outlet" mall or overstock stores are located in exurban locations. Tower City is too prominent and high priced for retail outlet. Hmm, seems like a retail consultant seems to have another opinion. From a couple years ago. http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2009/03/clevelands_downtown_considered.html Cleveland's downtown is considered choice real estate for outlet shopping Published: Saturday, March 21, 2009, 4:08 PM Updated: Saturday, March 21, 2009, 6:10 PM Outlets, often located in far-flung places near freeway ramps or in tourist meccas, might not seem like an instant fit for the former department stores and historic buildings that line Euclid Avenue. But that's precisely what a retail consultant is pitching, as part of a broader scheme to move the corridor's renewal from the street to its storefronts.
  18. You probably are correct that Downtown has more small businesses than we think, but Staples Advantage (their business program) is set up on the low end for businesses between 20-100 people. That is a very low threshold. Additionally, Staples offers free shipping from their website. I imagine a good number of places use that if they are under 20 employees.
  19. Hmm, not really. First it is $25 if you buy online, or $28 walk up. Second, making snow is extremely expensive. That is what most of the lift ticket to ski resorts cover. BTW, Snowtubing at Boston Mills is $25 for 3 hours. Snow Days is unlimited snowtubing, and if you just want tubing it is $20. Much better deal. It is a good thing that they included the OSU v UM hockey game and are staying open until then. It will give them a chance to recoup on what has been a fairly warm start to the winter season. With Temps not expected to drop into the 20's until next week, really the first chance to make snow, there is about 20% of their season with out the tubing really up to snuff. Heres to a nice cold winter :drunk:
  20. Well, It will certainly be better than all the cracked granite and cheap fixes that are currently there. Hopefully there wont be pools of water either.
  21. The casino could change that. With it being just across the square, having a place that is not the Tilted Kilt (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit, still can't believe that place exhists) would probably work.
  22. I think there is Valet service in conjunction with the 668 garage. But that was what made me question this spot too, pretty sure they indicated "FREE" parking. Could be that with a receipt from their restaurant parking is "FREE".

Its still going to be a long cold winter (actively praying for snow, the skier wants to go out and play) as I expect the Cavs to still be a work in process. Additionally, according to some recent studies the economic impact from sports teams is overrated. http://moneyland.time.com/2011/11/07/the-nba-lockout-and-the-economy-an-overstated-impact/ However, it does still have an impact (from the article): Let’s be clear: The lockout will do some damage. On a more micro-level, arena support staff – the vendors, the concession-stand operators, the security guards, the ticket takers – will be out of work, at a time when low-skill workers are having trouble finding other employment. The burger joints and bars near the arenas will take a hit. These adverse effects are very real, and should not be marginalized. Select individuals will suffer and will have to scramble. But cities will survive without basketball.
  24. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Zinc space then. The impression that I have gotten regarding their restaurant is that it will be similar to their Dim and Dem Sum foodtruck. Which is a completely different atmosphere than what Zinc currently is. IMO, Zinc was always good, never great but good. Their patio really is fantastic so hopefully that will be fully taken advantage of. It is interesting that they were bought out, they could work in another spot DT especially over by PHS.
  25. Yeah... It will be interesting how this, the FFB/Tilted Kilt issue, and the ground floor spot in the Casino Welcome Center play out. Hopefully there will be some more info soon. Dim and Dem Sum's facebook page said there would be an announcement in 8 days, which would put it tomorrow on Thanksgiving. I imagine it will be Friday.
