  1. What ever happened to the public art of handle bars with streamers on the building there? It does need something as the wall of the parking garage is pretty bland.
  2. Looks like all is not well in the Marcellus Shale World. http://www.businessinsider.com/wow-us-slashes-marcellus-shale-gas-estimate-by-80-2011-8 WOW: U.S. Slashes Marcellus Shale Gas Estimate By 80% The U.S. will slash its Marcellus Shale reserve estimate to 84 trillion cubic feet of gas from the earlier estimates of 410 trillion, according to Bloomberg. Geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey provided the new number, which supersedes estimates from the Energy Information Administration. The EIA does not contest the new number: "They’re geologists, we’re not. We’re going to be taking this number and using it in our model,” an EIA analyst told Bloomberg.
  3. Nothing can be made that cheap! :P I dont understand what you mean. With Sony buying Marvel Entertainment, they are doing exactly what TW has done with DC comics for the longest time. However, Sony has the added financial burden of buying out distribution rights of previous Marvel productions [Disney wasn't going to do this at first, but they like to control everything] and the projects already in the pipeline since Marvel (for the most part) sought distribution rights on a project by project basis. Meaning they have no leverage on post theatrical distribution or performance. Not to mention the Administrative overhead of not having a HQ and building out sets and office for each production. They had several different entities fight for control over the movie (the marvel studios and marvel Animation were not owned by the same companies). They thought they stop studio cannibalization on the front end, but screwed themselves on the Home Entertainment side of the equation. I dealt with this insanity when we divested the rights to two characters. There is a lot more stuff I could go into, but can't. Disney has a large HE audience, so of course they want to control their properties/Catalog. Which is exactly how DC comics has handled by TW. So what is the difference? They do now, but Disney didn't always have control of Marvel. This allowed Marvel to get many of their properties made if there was interest, from them and another party. This is how they got their lesser known properties made; Lionsgate took on Punisher which is not a major property to begin with so it works for them. Is that a type of movie that WB would have made, probably not. And can we please agree that Green Lantern wasn't well received by the public at large? I had thought that was indisputable, regardless if it made money.
  4. I thought it was in one of their recommendations. Granted that doesnt mean it will be implemented as the funding is opaque at best right now.
  5. Side note: It's currently being projected to be a $260 million film...putting it as the 3rd most expensive film of all time... Disney needs to recoup Marvel's losses and make up for having to buy the rights for movie deals that were already in place. They've put all their franchise characters, sans the X-Men (and their related characters) into this movie. Its not going to be pretty next May. I'll do everything in my power to see to it that its a failure! (evil laugh) Just because WB wont get off their @ss and use all the characters from the DC universe, instead of just rehashing Batman and Superman every 10 years or so. Since X-men came out in 2000 they remade Superman (meh) and Batman (Christopher Nolan is a genius) while Marvel unleashed their entire portfolio. It took 11 years to go to their next most recognizable property, Green Lantern, which was terrible. Hopefully Wonder Woman is better, I am already writing off the next Green Lantern as Ryan Reynolds is still leading it. WB handling of DC gets a big fail. OH NO YOU DI-INT! Those movies were commercial successes! Prove to me otherwise. Thor was snooze-fest! Captain America looked like Captain Crunch and that ending? REALLY? What exactly do you know of the "handling" of DC? Do tell! I don't mean in a commercial sense. Any movie can be made at a price point that will likely generate a ROI. It is the risk taking approach that marvel has embarked upon as opposed to being beholden to one studio the DC has stayed in. I think marvel had the same arrangement for a good amount of time. But once the rights reverted back to them they went gangbusters on marketing them to various studios. Some have been terrible as well, Daredevil, Elektra, both Fantastic Fours were meh at best. But they have at least opened the vault, and it looks like DC might finally be doing so as well. I am still upset that I didn't get to see the explosion yesterday. I'm in the PNC building, but on the wrong side :(

  7. I have a feeling that most of the disconnect that there is "nothing to do" comes from our microwave society. Everyone wants life manufactured and handed to to them. Taking time to formulate a plan of things to do without being told is a not simple. It takes time. All the information about what is happening in a city, any city, is scattered all over the place. Whereas a single destination like Cocker Park or the Metroparks will have all of their events in one place. This makes finding events or attractions that aren't blatently obvious, like an Indians game, "work". And people are just plain lazy.
  8. Right all of that is possible, but it takes a ton of time to make all your own food/meals. If both parents, or if there is only a single parent, are working then there isn't really time to do all the work that goes into making meals from scratch. Should more natural ingredients be used to stretch each meal further? Absolutely. But there is a trade-off that has to be weighed.
  9. Precisely. For example say its a beautiful Saturday and you want to do something, but the indians are out of town and you dont want to go to a restaurant. You could go to WSM, always entertaining even if you aren't buying anything, but thats in OC. You could go to some of the Art Galleries, but those are more likely in Tremont. ou could go to one of the museums, but then you are most likely in UC.

Crap, that sounds like a place I could have passed out in .... I'm mean stayed in. Sorry to burst in on the conversation late, but I saw the thread title on the front page of Urban Ohio and started reading through. I work for the Treasury in NYC and travel to DC regularly. I always try to stay in Marriott properties and in the last year I've stayed at the Renaissance Dupont Circle a few times. It's a very nice hotel with great staff, but it isn't immediately in Dupont Circle. The closest Metro station is actually the Foggy Bottom stop on the blue/orange line, about a 10 or 15 minute walk. So... if you don't mind doing some walking (which you're going to be doing in DC anyway), I would absolutely recommend it. Yeah I realize its not where it says it is, but that's fine. Truth be told I actually like that there is a little ways to go to get to one of the Metro stops. Makes stopping for breakfast easier to justify.
  11. Yeah I thnk because they normally have a giant table set up down there it makes the space feel smaller than maybe it is, but that looks like a tight fit.

We thought about Baltimore but ultimately decided to do DC. I changed the title of the thread to prevent any confusion.
  13. I am assuming you mean down where their kitchen is?? How on earth did 40 people fit into that space??? Even if you move all the tables it is def not big enough for 20, let alone 40.
  14. The best thing I have ever done was go there 3 times before they blew up. The first two times there was maybe a 30 min wait. Granted this was at least 3 years ago and I haven't been back. Hopefully an Independence and DT/OC location will spread everyone out and normalize the times. But I still have fond memories of walking into that crapmed little place in Lakewood (it was before their "expansion")

Ok, so its looking like Starwood lost out to Marriott. Right now we are leaning heavily toward the Renaissance Dupont Circle (although it is really on GW's campus). Does anyone have any experience/opinions with this property?
  16. Even so if it improves the look of the building thats another benefit the movie is providing.
  17. Isn't that the ted crane in Mayday's pic? LOL. Hey I'm not a crane.
  18. Good to see the letter from Mr Calabrese posted all over thee TC rapid station. Hope all others on the west side got similar treatment.
  19. yes, got typing too fast. I will admit that any form of micromanagement stunts most, if not all, forms of growth. I'm not not necessarily saying that the drug companies will start dropping anthrax into aspirin or anything but if a company knows that its competitor is developing a similar drug there will be corners cut to be first to market. This happens more in the consumer product side, faulty items are pushed through that do have a significant affect on the population, ie. Toyota and faulty gas pedals. Going that route with drug companies seems like opening Pandora's box a bit.
  20. Gramarye, I'm curious is there any regulation that you accept as necessary? While there are some regulations that I agree could go or be adjusted, specifically the H1N-B, I am curious to see what your opinion is on the correct level of regulation. Also, most regulations were not created in a vacuum. The FTA was created in response to "unethical sales practices, such as misrepresenting the ingredients of food products or therapeutic substances." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_and_Drug_Administration#History
  21. I actually boarded the train after you, 7:35 or so. Not entirely sure if it was a 3 car train or not (it's still before I have ingested the needed amount of coffee to function) but the station was much less crowded than previously. Maybe due to a 3 car train arriving before hand. Either way good to hear that RTA has responded appropriatly with more capacity.
  22. Jerry, any estimate as to when the signaling system will be repaired? Thanks Also, noticed today that the train in was much less crowded. Not sure if it was people leaving earlier or not wanting to deal with the current frustrations. Also, while getting the PD involved in an RTA issue is usually opening a can of maggots they are still the best way to inform everyone about the issues that RTA is dealing with.
  23. Awesome. That was a fine worth taking. I feel a little better now. :) Jabaal Sheard is a beast. He is very strong, a huge wingspan and has a high motor drive. If the Browns can put him in situations where isn't double-teamed, I predict he will be in quite a few defensive highlights -- even in his rookie year. If Phil Taylor does his job or a quality FA pickup on the DL can be had, Sheard will stay out of double teams. I'll be watching him too. BTW, if I'm mistaken, the Browns MUST play big in free agency to meet the pay floor of the new CBA. Teams must pay a minimum collective salary of 95 percent of the cap, I believe. And the Browns are $33 million UNDER the cap! 99% for years 1 & 2, 95% thereafter. Yeah there is going to be a lot of money flying around.
  24. Although I was only there only once, that's a small hit to the downtown scene. On the other hand, there were about 4 other sports bars [panini's, winking lizard, nick's, harry buffalo, and cleats] within a 2-3 block radius of there; but I don't know of anyone else who offers virtual golf.. According to their website, they were owned by K&D, who also owns[ed] Ponte Vecchio, and Zinc. Wonder if K&D is restructuring or going out of business ? FYI Cleats changed to High Street grill, pretty sure its still the same sports bar type of place though. Caddyshack was an interesting concept, but I don't think the residential population DT was strong enough to support a simulated golf/bar/restaurant. Especially with all the other sports bars that are in the area. Very interesting that K&D got into the restaurant business. As an actual Restaurant Management enterprise, I would not have been surprised to see them do more of the property management as that is what they do. Hopefully they don't put the same kibosh on Zinc as that place has wonderful cocktails and an amazing patio. The food is pretty good too.
  25. I completely disagree. Its the principle. Why are the shuttles needed? Lets not be gullable and think the shuttle are going to promote businesses in other portions of the city.. Thare are going to be used to help people get from other parts of the city directly into the Casino. Therefore reducing the number of people patronize businesses in/near the outbound terminal location. They do work in reverse too. Taking people from the casino to other parts of the city. Remember this "Phase 1" casino is going to have very limited food options. I would be surprised if they were not partnering with bar/restaurants in E 4th (walkable) Tremont (Not Walkable / hardly accessible through RTA either) and Ohio City (not Walkable/ RTA accessible).
