University Heights: Development and News
Except those residential dwellings are all car-dependent and isolated from the retail center by big parking lots and a ring road. University Square's proposed redevelopment has the residential attached to the retail component and connected to it by attractive walkways, sidewalks and placemaking. It's much more pedestrian friendly. And while the parking structure is hidden, the parking access isn't hidden. This has been my problem with going to that Target, trying to figure out how to get to the parking is extremely confusing. Hopefully this makes it to fruition. Having the built in population will likely make those storefronts more valuable too.

Living in Shaker Heights
We just moved in a year ago, and I can second the concern regarding maintenance issues. They will always be there, but you should expect it with 75+ year old homes. We are in the Onaway area, but were heavily looking in the Fernway district. These are really the areas where newer families seem to be landing in as we have two couples that just bought as well that have 2 kids each under 5 (both with a third on the way too). Good luck and (hopefully) welcome to Shaker.

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
Until it is clear what Marriott plans to do with the various Hotel Flags it is hard to speculate. Sheraton has been a trouble spot for Starwood for a while, so it will be more interesting to see what Marriott decides to do with that brand as a whole. The Westin and Marriott brands generally compete for the same customers, and I would not be surprised if one of those properties gets rebranded. To what though I am not sure, then again any rebranding is still a few years out as this merger is going to be quite the lengthy combination.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
We just bought a 1/2 mi-ish from here and this is a very positive development. Like willyboy[/member] said, it is a very close knit neighborhood and you get to know your neighbors pretty easily. We're looking at two places tomorrow in Fernway and one on the Cleveland border one house over from Shaker. It's amazing how as soon as you're one street over from Shaker, the quality instantly diminishes. It'll be interesting to see what other retail/restaurants/office the new development gets. Hopefully they get more commitments. Yeah, when we were moving everything from the old house in Middleburg to the new one we came up Kinsmen->Ashby->Warrington. The difference along Ashby as you cross from Cleveland to Shaker is stark. My parents said it was like driving into pleasentville. We looked for a long time in the Fernway neighborhood. There are some nice houses there and we did make an offer on one but it did not pan out. I think the homes on that side of Lee, compared to the Onaway area, are a little smaller. My wife does kind of wish we had ended up there as we would be closer to the new Mitchell's, but I digress. Hope you end up in the neighborhood. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Excellent! This is good news... I'll utilize this in December for sure. Although the walk seems much longer in the winter months! I know there are other Red Line stations that allow overnight parking. Are any of those safe for leaving a car overnight for 2 or 3 nights? I haven't had any issues at Brookpark so far, but any chance to save gas money is welcome. I have used the Puritas station many a time, never had any issues either. Just be smart about where you leave things in your car. Also helps that I was leaving a not so great Malibu.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
They are probably doing this somewhat to get a trial run this season. Iron out any kinks and be ready for full go next year. I don't think they would want to be surprised by anything then and have stop/start service throughout the first part of the year.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
On one hand, I'd love to see something like the Inner Harbor, but on the other hand, I'm glad that the developers are going after local tenants and thus it won't be anything like the Inner Harbor (which is filled with Ripley's Believe it or Not, Hard Rock, Bubba Gump Shrimp, P.F. Changs, Hooters, Pizzareia Uno, just to name a select few...) I second this, we visited Baltimore a few years ago and while the inner harbor is nicely developed it is quite filled with these chains. This is a much needed step in the right direction and provides some interaction with the marina that is right there. That alone could become a draw from some of the area marina's (E55th, Edgewater, etc.) where there isn't much that you can take your boat too. That is really one of the reasons we don't keep our closer.

UrbanOhio Parents & Families
Well part of our move to the east side was due to my wife being pregnant. That's no longer true. Maura was born 5/11 at 10:27am. 5lbs 9oz. Mom and Baby are currently resting, hopefully. So now the next life adventure begins...

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
I walk by this building daily and they have removed the scaffolding along E9th St. This seems somewhat odd, as there are still sections of the exterior that need replacement pieces installed, and some are quite high up. What has been completed looks fantastic though.

Inner Ring East Side Cleveland Schools
You didn't know that your old buddy from 4 Meyer grew up in University Heights and still lives in the Heights area? ;) I think that Shaker Heights is a safe bet for schools depending on your housing budget. The ratings are a bit deceiving for all schools like that because of the proportion of low-income students they serve, but the district overall still offers a wide variety high quality programs. I personally would have no problems sending a child to Cleveland Heights-University Heights or even South Euclid-Lyndhurst, but for many those options have long become unrealistic. Yeah, we ended up in Shaker. I knew you were in that area but the whole past month has been crazy (and this next future month will be too as the wife is due in 4 weeks). We moved this past weekend, and really lucked out as it had rained all week until Sat/Sun when we moved. Now the second stage of purging begins. Going through all the cr@p we moved.

Has anyone on here used an in home daycare?? Either your home or where you dropped the child off at someone elses?? We are in full research mode and cannot find anything. Also, eastsiders what daycares have you used? Recommendations? Now that we have actually bought the house in Shaker we came to the realization that we need to solve all of these other problems. Daycare being a big one.

Inner Ring East Side Cleveland Schools
Just to let you all know we have an agreement to purchase a house in Shaker Heights on Warrington. Hopefully dont find any surprises during the inspection on Thursday, and can start planning all the needed baby stuff. And there is a lot of stuff that they apparently need.

Inner Ring East Side Cleveland Schools
A lot of big things have been happening lately, so much so that I have not been checking into this site for the last few months. The first bit of big news is that the Wife is pregnant and due in the middle of May. The second piece of news is that we sold our house in Middleburg and are looking to move to the east side, most likely Shaker Heights but we are also looking in Cleveland/University Heights (maybe as far north as South Euclid or into Beachwood but that's doubtful). Yes we decided that one big life decision deserves another. I think we are crazy, but soon we are going to be out of our house so really need to find a place. But that brings me to my question about the school districts in the area. The ratings from the state seem to indicate that all the inner ring school districts are not that good, and really need to get their act together. Neither of us have any contacts that actually live in these areas so do not have a first hand account as to whether these rankings are accurate or not. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks Prior to getting pregnant I never concerned myself too much with how the school districts were ranked, but its funny how things change.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
That paninis picture with the marina did not seem doable at that spot. Marinas take up a ton of space, and at that location they would be cutting into the breakwall of the river. At a rough estimate the marina pictured would be about the same size as the one at NCH. Now places to tie up similar to Shooters would be beneficial as there are not too many places that you are able to take a boat to if you are in the city.

Cleveland: Downtown: Millennia's Garfield Bldg & HQ Developments
The PNC branch that is in the Garfield Building will close Dec. 1st. I believe at that time they will move to the new branch being constructed in the PNC building. The historic branch will be converted to a restaurant.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
At first glance I was wondering what was connecting the science center to the Rock Hall then realized it was the crane to the new Hilton. I really like the new marina. Was down around that area during the one Brown's game and the activity was amazing. The Goodtime had several cruises going on, the park was packed, and people were watching the game on their boats docked right within the harbor. Not a bad way to tailgate. That marina is d@mn expensive though. $2/ft for overnight dockage and $2.50/ft on holiday/event (browns home games) weekends. It isn't that big of a marina and they are really the only option downtown so they will get their customer's, but that is a steep price to pay. FYI, the docks at PIB are $1.65/ft. I do wonder if their overnight price for a non-holiday/event will come down some. Even $0.10/ft could make a difference. I was also down there after the air show talking to the dockhands, and they indicated that currently the gangway has a actual security guard overnight but that by next season they will be moving to keycards. Also, that they are taking reservations for Labor Day 2015 already.

MLS: General News & Discussion
The switch to the International calander is not going to happen. Increasingly it is looking like some of the European Leagues are considering an MLS type calander. Specifically I recall the Budesliga talking about the switch, it may have been in referance to the 2022 Qatar WC but there are still positives for some of the European Leagues. http://www.worldsoccer.com/columnists/keir-radnedge/rummenigge-hints-at-switch-in-bundesliga-calendar-to-accommodate-winter-world-cup-in-qatar

Columbus Crew Discussion
^ Yeah but Houston in the streach run into the playoffs is always dangerous. Dom Kinnear always seems to get his team into the playoffs no matter how they have started the season, and then makes an improbable run in said playoffs. He's just a periannial thorn, just ask KC who had been eliminated 2 years running before getting that monkey off their back last season.

Cleveland Gladiators Discussion
^ I'd say they are doing something right. Their average attendance has gone from 6.5K (2011), 6.2K (2012), 7.8K (2013), to 10.8K (2014). Just because you are not aware doesn't mean that he isn't targeting the right market for the product. I'd say he's doing the same with the Monsters as they have gone from 6K in 2008 on average to 8K this past season.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
^ I took the wife to L'Albatross last year for her birthday (March so the patio wasn't open) and we were not as impressed with the food as we thought we would be. The ambiance is nice, and the service was top, but the food did not come off like we had expected. Now, we did enjoy Parallax, also by Burrell and thought that was better. Also have our anniversary comming up (only 7 years so no island vaca) and I was also curious about Washington Place. Also Fire in SS, which I'm certian MTS can give some insight to.

2014 FIFA World Cup
Remeber Futbol (Soccer) means so, so much more to other countries than here. Brazil is an exceptional case even by that standard. Literally living, eating, and sleeping the sport. Pretty sure just about the whole country shut down during the game.

2014 FIFA World Cup
The ENG-CR game is essentially meaningless. Costa Rica has advanced regardless, and likely won the group unless Italy or Uruguay make up the goal difference (Italy needs to win by 4 and Uruguay would need to win by 5), and England is out. The real interesting match will be Italy v. Uruguay. Italy advances with a win or a draw, while Uruguay has to win to advance. Also, so far the Mexico v. Croatia game is set up the same way. There will probably be a few more before the last games of group play. One final thing, If the USA wins against Portugal this Sunday they will almost certainly advance. 6:00pm game. I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!!!

Cleveland: Downtown: Hilton Cleveland
^^ Are we sure that the Schoefield will be a Palomar? I don't think that has been annouced. Starwood moving into Cleveland will be a game changer. Previously there was, for the most part, only Marriott properties. So this diversity will greatly expand the leisure travelers who decide where to go based on the availalblity of certain loyalty programs (my wife and I are ones). Really interested to see what happens with the proposed Le Meridian, work as ground to a stop but it is actually listd on Strawood's site as being completed in 2016. I guess we have a good wait ahead of us.
