Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
Interesting reader comment after that story... "We tried to go to closing 3 times in the last 12 months and the title could not transfer because of Michelle Heimburger’s $800k Federal Tax lien. If Michelle ever comes back to USA and pays her taxes, maybe the title will transfer at some point. This “residential renovation” will not happen. I still have valid agreements with the current owner, but Michelle and will have to come back to the USA and face this before anyone can buy it. The Franklin Castle TV show is still going forward and will cover the sale of the Castle, when I purchase it from the IRS."

"Glover envisions a fleet of casino buses shuttling visitors to and from downtown attractions, PlayhouseSquare and maybe Tremont." Yes, please.

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
If you look at popular commercial areas in cities, you'll find chains. Chain restaurants came to the Flats at its peak. So I agree it's a good thing, as long as it's not ALL chains.

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
The Warehouse District has great potential with all those surface parking lots. It just needs developers and money. And with the billions in downtown development currently underway, it's just a matter of time.

It says the basement "will feature a kitchen and a 400-seat buffet restaurant with an entrance to the Tower City food court". I think that will be a good connection to Tower City and that a buffet restaurant will be a good addition to the food court. I wonder where that connection will come through?

Cleveland: Downtown: Wendy Park
Actually, the "logical" spot WOULD be Settler's Landing because that's where the Ohio and Erie Canal actually began. But it doesn't matter. If the towpath trail comes to Settler's Landing, you can just ride 1/4 mile to the Center Street swing bridge, cross it and go down Center Street to River Road and cross the new bridge to Wendy Park. There will be different paths that split off and cover the area. There doesn't have to be "one path".

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Isn't that what StrapHanger was saying in his quote? The bridge would leap over the valley created by Doan Brook and Rockefeller Park, which now divides University Circle from the Hough neighborhood to the west, which is where CWRU plans to build its West Campus on roughly 15 acres of mostly vacant land immediately north of the temple. An additional section could extend back across MLK Jr. Dr. to link the art museum to the Judson Manor apartment tower.

Nice that you can see the outline of its footprint now.

Yeah, I thought most new construction was 3-4 stories.

Anyone know what's going into the old House of Cues space on Superior? I walk by there every day and there's construction going on, but I can't tell what for.

I mean, at the very least, can't they build an apartment tower on the top of this new parking garage? That would ease the pain for me somewhat. Give me a few hundred residential units instead of just more parking spaces. They're spending $1 billion already. What's another $50 million?

They should have had the press conference in the Columbia Building. ;) Not a fan of the idea of slot machines at the race tracks. One of the reasons I supported the casino was because it would be putting something downtown that didn't exist out in the suburbs. But now slot machines will be out in the suburbs. Gilbert doesn't care - he gets their money either way. But those who care about vibrant, dense downtowns should care because if they can get it in the suburbs, they won't come downtown for it. That's what happened with Tower City when all those cool stores suddenly started popping up in the burbs.

Or outside of Cleveland like Short North in Columbus or Duval Street in Key West.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Jeremy likes this. Looks like the building will come all the way up to Chester with parking in between and behind, which is good. Rental rates will be $850-$1,550, which is good. I also think it's very interesting that this is NOT student housing - it's market rate housing that just happens to be on CSU's campus. Anyone can live here. Didn't think I'd still be reading about a "cyber cafe" in 2011, but whatever... :)

Palookaville is BYOB. So what you overpay for on chili, you can save on by bringing your own alcohol! :) I don't think the chili is overpriced at all. Definitely worth it.

So what's the other option? You have this space that now is ripe for development and a developer willing to pay millions to make something happen there. If he shouldn't put restaurants, offices and clubs there, what should go there?

I'm almost positive that idea was scrapped in place of nicer pedestrian tunnels. Thanks, ODOT.

djunior - I know it can be discouraging but I hope it also motivates you to do something to make this city great. Because Cleveland is really small enough for one person to actually make a difference. We need more young people like you to stay in the city.

Why do you keep spouting things that are just wrong? The Columbia Building is NOT in poor condition and it's LARGER than the Grand Arcade was when it was converted. Your arguments would be listened to more if you got your facts straight.

Yeah, no one is going to not come to the casino because they have to walk outside for a little bit. There's casinos across the country that have large parking lots where people have to walk outside for a much longer distance to get inside.

I have no problem with something that would make it less profitable to run a parking lot in downtown Cleveland.

I'm another that will throw my hat in the ring to say that if I HAD to choose (and both options suck), I'd rather the Stanley Building go than the Columbia Building. I think that stretch of Prospect between Ontario and East 4th has more pedestrian potential than Ontario does. Leaving the Columbia alone will help that but the Stanley will be surrounded by cars anyway. It's gonna look like crap.
