  1. Well, 190 apartments will definitely help the empty storefronts on East 6th between Euclid and Superior.
  2. When your condo was built, you were told lake and city views. You have lake and city views. It didn't say those were guaranteed for life. Now new development is going up on the vacant land near your property that will obstruct your view. Did you think that land would just sit there vacant forever? First world problems.

  4. If I recall, there was some tension between the Soldiers and Sailors Monument folks and the people behind the Public Square redesign when this plan first started. S&S people were saying "You can't just change our monument without asking us" and PS folks were saying "Maybe we should move the monument..." Well, the S&S people have to be happy now because the new design integrates the monument so much better. You can't help but get close to it while walking around the square. I'm sure they're gonna start breaking attendance records.
  5. Does anyone know the history of 2628 Detroit? That's such an interesting building to me with the wood detail on the second level and I wonder what it was used for in the past and why it's been vacant for so long.

Cleveland Public Square posted on Facebook "PUBLIC SQUARE TO REOPEN ON JUNE 30" and that "While we understand excitement and anticipation for the new Public Square is high, the public re-dedication ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 30 at 11 a.m., at which time Public Square will be completely open for our community to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming Northeast Ohio residents at that time. While we encourage the community to enjoy views from around Public Square, we also ask that they respect this short period of site preparation so that all may enjoy our beautiful new Public Square beginning June 30." So, "The fences are down but please don't come in until June 30"? Obviously that's not going to happen. Have the "grand opening" on June 30 but asking people to "respect this short period of site preparation" (whatever that means) seems like an odd request. As I'm rereading that, I'm not sure if they're asking people to stay out or what message they were trying to convey with that post.
  7. The entire fence was down this morning, but the cement barricades were still there. It seemed like anyone could access it. I was gonna ride my bike through it but got distracted. I'll try and head over there soon.

From the article: "If managed well by the city-county Group Plan Commission, and if programmed with events year-round and patrolled to keep it safe, the square has a chance to become a true central park for the city and a key connection between and among the downtown districts around it." This is so key and what I'm most nervous and cautiously optimistic about. Looks like it will be beautiful when it opens. Hope it stays that way (and gets even better as trees mature, that empty lot gets filled in and buildings like Key Tower stop turning its back to it).
  9. Is it cheaper to remove and replant trees every year than it is to take care of trees you already have?
  10. Ah, the annual planting of the trees that will be removed in the fall when they die. The city plants trees like someone people plant annual flowers. Here's to hoping they survive.
  11. The only difference is population and jobs. Really? Have car ownership rates and attitudes towards public transportation not changed since 1910? How about construction of the highway system or population sprawl? There's a lot of reasons Public Square needs to adapt with the times.

  14. I can understand how national restaurants are needed for national retailers to be interest. It just gives them more of an apples to apples comparison. "Well, we have a store next to National Restaurant in Pittsburgh and National Restaurant is opening in Cleveland, so perhaps we should open there as well." No one wants to be the guinea pig.
  15. Tear down an in-use office building for even more greenspace downtown? And add a gap to East 9th Street in the process? No thanks.

  19. I was recently talking to a guy who's building new homes in Cleveland who said it's a pain in the butt to get things approved in the city of Cleveland. Plan approval for new home construction takes 7-14 days in Lake County. In Cleveland, they're averaging 200 days. 200 days just to get approved! Or to change an existing home plan, like the future owners wanting to extend a front porch or something: East side suburbs take days whereas he emailed the building guy in Cleveland 5 weeks ago and hadn't heard back yet when I spoke to him. Really disheartening to hear when so many positive things are happening in the city and people WANT to build here, but it's so hard to move things forward.

  21. Superior has been narrowed from 77 feet wide to 48 feet wide.
  22. Wow, this building looks to be very close to the Rock Hall. Will it distract from it? I'd like to see more renderings of this in the same shot as the Rock Hall to see how they interact together.
  23. When was this originally built? Too bad it predated Urban Ohio because it seems like a project posters on this board would love: a dense, vertical shopping development. But now it seems to be mostly dead. What killed it? Is it the urban nature? No one in the suburbs wanted to use its multi story garage?
