  1. It does look nice. I think this might be the biggest patio downtown, as long as you don't consider Shooters part of downtown....
  2. Yeah, it looks like a generic sign. They spell supermarket two different ways ("Super Market and "Supermarket"). I don't think the space there is big enough for it to be that super.
  3. Could anyone clarify a rumor here... I heard from someone at Tri-C that Brandt Evans of Blue Canyon in Twinsburg will be the head chef of this new Tri-C culinary project on Public Square. So there will be a school and a restaurant (run by Evans) and students from the school can/will work in the restaurant. I could have sworn she said Evans but now I'm second guessing myself...
  4. What were they resisting? They wanted it made into residential? Or they just preferred the vacant storefront look? Maybe they just don't like Turkish food...
  5. I'll be sad to see Positively Cleveland move from Public Square. I thought that was a good location for them - much better than being shoved out of eyesight way up into the Terminal Tower where they were before.
  6. There's a billboard on I-480 east advertising the opening of "Bodies - The Exhibit" on June 5.
  7. Actually, Fairview Hospital is in Cleveland.
  8. There's a lot more than just Lutheran Hospital preventing the strip from extending to Detroit...
  9. The problem is that Mayfield Heights (and most suburbs) don't have the public transportation to support poor individuals who have no cars. They need to be able to walk to Dave's and other social services. The suburbs don't provide that. It's a tough nut to crack. But with all this talk of litter, what about the chicken bones. Every time I walk my dog over the Veterans Bridge, down West 25th and back over the Lorain Bridge, it's like a contest between me and her of who can find the chicken bone faster. Thanks, Linda's Superette.
  10. Yes. They said they want to make sure the people redesigning the mall are talking to the people redesigning Public Square and that both spaces make sense. So (and this is my example, not theirs) if the mall is redesigned to allow and even by suited for Cleveland Orchestra concerts, then Public Square doesn't need to have that same capability and vice versa. That was one of the thoughts that I left with after the Public Square forum held months ago. I went in wanting to make sure whatever design they went with, it didn't ruin the ability to have concerts there (i.e. the "Thread it" plan). But if the malls and designed to hold concerts, then it doesn't bother me if Public Square can't.
  11. I agree, but what changes would you suggest? Some would recommend removing all public housing and social services from the area but I don't know if that's going to happen and it's probably not the right/ethical thing to do either. So Ohio City will probably always be home to an interesting and diverse crowd...
  12. The discussion on this point revolved around making the malls somewhere that suburban families would WANT to go on evenings and weekends.
  13. Jacobs had a plan for that lot that fell with the economy. I hope that will be resurrected soon.
  14. There's something happening at the building at West St. Clair and Old River Road -- the old "Calabria Fine Italian Foods" building. The windows have been papered over for a while, I've heard hammering going on over there... Anyone know anything?
  15. Ok, so the end of June is 6 weeks away. It's going to take longer than six weeks to build out that Higbees space, hire and train people, etc. Couldn't they do all that stuff before so they could just open for business the day after this passes? It's currently illegal to operate a casino in Ohio, but you could still build a temporary one and wait.
  16. I thought construction on the aquarium was supposed to start this year and effectively push out Windows on the River and everything else there? But spending $1 million to expand Windows on the River seems silly if they're going to kick them out soon. The article says, "These improvements are in addition to plans for a $50 million development adjacent to the Powrhouse in which an aquarium will be the focal point." Adjacent? Not "inside"? So where exactly is the aquarium going and when does construction start? In regards to Windows not being used... They have a lot of business luncheons there during the week. I've been to a couple of events there and a couple of weddings. They obviously ARE busy enough if they're expanding. I mean, this is a private business, not the government. :) Rock Bottom was usually dead when I went by. I wish it wasn't because I love the space and the restaurant. But there just isn't enough on the West Bank to draw people there. We need major mixed use development on those surface parking lots. Yeah, yeah, I know... Down economy, market forces, blah, blah blah...
  17. Euclid Avenue from Public Square to East 105th is about four miles long. So I don't think it will (or should be) "one thing". It's not going to be all residential and office above with retail and restaurants below. It's also not going to be all hospitals and biotech. It's going to be a mix. And I think there's room for it all. Multiple users from multiple developers and interested created over time could make it an interesting area.
  18. I dream of a high-rise on the parking lot at East 4th and Prospect. With built in parking. And an ESPN Zone. Ah, well. Guy can dream, right?
  19. A temporary casino in the old Higbees space with a main entrance at the corner of Ontario and Prospect could give some more life to that corner.
  20. (while there has been some mention of this new skate park in the North Coast Harbor thread, I don't feel it's appropriate to continue the discussion there since the new skate park will actually be in the Flats. And I was unable to find another, more appropriate thread...) So a public meeting was held last night at the Speakeasy on West 25th to discuss the new Flats skate park to be built at the tip of the Columbus Road peninsula. There's some decent coverage of this at Newsnet5: http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland-forum-seeks-ideas-for-new-skate-park The city has hired nationally recognized Grindline of Seattle (www.grindline.com) to design the park. This sounds like a great project. But the video on the link above had the owner of a pizza shop in the area saying he's not happy about it because he's building bocchi ball courts outside and says the "noise" from the skate park will not be a good mix with the bocchi ball courts. Ummm... First off, you're in the Flats. Second, you're a pizza shop -- the idea of having a world class skate park just steps away, where people will drive an hour or more to get there doesn't appeal to you? What?! Don't you realize how much pizza those skateboarders will buy?! It's gonna at least double his business!
  21. Ok. That's the building I posted a pic of in this thread on October 23, looking through the window...
  22. This is exciting because Gustafson Guthrie Nichol designed Lurie Garden in Chicago - part of the widely acclaimed Millennium Park. Hopefully this is a sign that Malls B and C will have a truly awesome design.
  23. That's what confuses me the most. I went to a public meeting about the casino at the City Club before election day. I apologize because I don't remember the guy's name, but he was one of Dan Gilbert's guys, and he was speaking about the casino. I said, "The land you're looking to build the casino on is currently owned by Forest City. Do you think that getting the land will be a problem?" (or something to that extent) He said, "We have options on the land already." So I'm not sure what the hold up is. I can imagine that due to the topography of the land, there will be a lot more things to figure out than there would be if they were just building on an empty lot like it sound like they're doing in Cincinnati and Columbus. I also spoke to a Forest City executive about the negotiations at Jump Back Ball and he said he didn't think there would be any problems in getting this deal worked out, so again, not sure what the issues are. I think it's more than just money.
  24. I'm sorry, I'm confused. Which building is this? Someone have an address?
