Other Countries: Passenger Rail News
From an article originally posted in the Canada Rail thread about a new high speed rail project, I thought this quote was pretty humbling for the U.S. of A. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/high-speed-rail-canada-1.7365835 Turkey. Poland. Morrocco. Brazil. India. But not the U.S.?!?

And encourage the Haslams to sell if they don't want what's best for Cleveland's future.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
@KJP is the expert, but my understanding is that the Red Line cars are completely different from the Blue/Green Line cars --- that will all change in the next decade with the new vehicles already ordered. So it could be a question akin to "why does my 1980 Ford have so many fewer problems than my reconditioned 1990 Yugo?!"

Cleveland / Northeast Ohio: "What If/Hypothetical/Dream" Construction and Projects Discussion
But it sure would be nice to take a train to Blossom and avoid the traffic hassle (and it would lessen the traffic for those who do drive).

2024 US Senate Race
A lot of Republicans are the types that hate the government until they need help, such as in recovering from hurricanes.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
Agreed. It seems like they might be holding out for higher rent. It could take years to activate that block. And yet, they could put some simple startup business in there for six months at low rent to show some activity -- like an insurance broker or tailor or something that doesn't require the kind of buildout that a restaurant would want. An active space would be more attractive to the next tenant than the current dead block from the Ascent past the closed Nighttown and the former Zoss bakery.

Brook Park's mayor may not want the stadium. Then what?

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
The housing portion seems to be doing well. The retail portion has been empty until recently (a new UH urgent care center will be the first tenant)

Cleveland / Northeast Ohio: "What If/Hypothetical/Dream" Construction and Projects Discussion
How about a better concert shell in downtown for when they do play? The drive to Blossom (and trying to get out of Blossom afterward, and the lack of efficient public transit there and back) is pretty good persuasion for me to rarely go to Blossom...

Strange Rail Technologies
Could you clamp the sides of the rail for braking the trailing cars? I don't suppose there is a practical way to apply an opposing electrical field to overcome the permanent magnets' lift.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Agreed. And if Haslam wants a sea of parking, require him to cover the parking with solar panels.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Someone on the radio this morning referred to them as the "Guardiac Kids!"

Strange Rail Technologies
I had a second thought recently, what if you used this tech only on trailing cars? The engine being driven conventionally. (the concept essentially seems to be using magnets to levitate the train, with roller guides that would engage the sides of the rails to keep the train centered on the tracks -- that's their lateral wind and curve solution) Could this tech result in decrease friction in the towed cars, improving efficiency? You'd still have to overcome inertia, and probably turn it off during braking when you actually want more friction. Hmm. Not convinced, but it's more interesting that way than as a full maglev conversion.

Brook Park: New Cleveland Browns Stadium
The Haslams and the Browns can do whatever they like, I'm not particularly upset about this decision. (I think it's stupid, but time will tell.) But I will add my name to the list of "let's not spend any public money so that this billionaire can get richer" -- let him build his own stadium and attract his own investors. And if he's unhappy about traffic jams to get into his playground, he can pay RTA to add a station and pay for any highway improvements he wants.

Better than the "DeShaun Watson Experience" so far -- horribly expensive and outright embarrassing.

Then I take it as a positive that both Bibb and Ronayne are relatively new to their jobs and continue to be popular, and rightfully so - imho.

Peak Oil
This is in line with predictions of a rollercoaster ride at the end of the Oil Age. As we transition to other fuels, we can still see supply gluts and price drops even as the cost to exploit new fields increases. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/oct/16/fossil-fuels-could-become-cheaper-and-more-abundant-says-iea https://www.ogj.com/general-interest/economics-markets/article/55171807/rystad-energy-cost-of-new-upstream-oil-projects-rises-further

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I don't understand the calls for firing Day -- that's ridiculous in my opinion. We have been fortunate that Day stepped in and pretty much continued the Tressel/Meyer winning pattern. (Would we prefer the Browns' coaching carousel in the 21st century?) Day and Knowles both said that they need to coach better, and on that I can fully agree.

Columbus: Innerbelt News
Love that. Hey ODOT! How much land does this require vs. the traditional spaghetti junction being built in Columbus? How many lane-miles of asphalt and bridge spans will be required for maintenance -- what is the 20-year maintenance cost of this design vs. the spaghetti junction being built?
