  1. This will be an interesting trend to watch. Looking at the population trends at the county level means that Cuyahoga County's population is decreasing, while the population of surrounding counties is increasing. That does seem to be true. But downtown Cleveland is gaining population, and the best-loved neighborhoods from Tremont to Ohio City, Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights -- also are either stable or gaining population -- so where are the losses coming from? I'm guessing it's the older outer-ring suburbs losing out to even further-out suburbs in adjacent counties. Westlake and North Olmsted moving to Avon and Avon Lake? Maple Heights and Garfield Heights moving to Twinsburg? Euclid and Mayfield moving out to Mentor?
  2. Anywhere that borders East Cleveland is generally viewed as being more dangerous. But the North Coventry neighborhood is showing signs of turning around. Buildings are being fixed up or maintained, population seems to be stabilizing -- we'll see if that trajectory is sustainable, but there are some positive indicators there to counter those past shootings.
  3. No, but it was this vehicle -- now it's ours.
  4. Maybe the best thing that can be done is to take some video of the cars involved, get license plates, images of bikes and riders, etc. - so that if and when something else happens they can be used to track down the guilty parties.
  5. I still can't get over the hypocrisy that the small-government "pro-life" party is the one that wants to prohibit personal liberty, and also is opposed to policies that assist families with young children and healthcare for all (lives). What is often missed by Republicans is that there are a lot of Democrats who are opposed to abortion in almost all situations, but don't think that they or the government should make the decision for pregnant women. It's Republicans who think pregnant women and their doctors can't make good decisions for themselves.
  6. Firing up the teletype and contacting our senators.....
  7. The link has been deleted. Unfortunately, no end in sight to Republican control so that trend line is likely to continue.
  8. You should really check out the RFP/RFQ Submission presentation. Lots more detail. But there are a lot of unanswered questions, including financial. No, the city does not own the strip mall across Taylor (or the old synagogue). But apparently WXZ talked to the owner and the owner is "excited" about this project. Maybe that's "phase II" and WXZ and the property owner will be partners or something? I think the synagogue is in foreclosure, not sure. And as to the streetscape -- the developer is going to have to help the city "find" the funds, because CH doesn't have anything extra for investing. And the state seems to be in "cut" mode, so CH can't expect to get help there. Funds in the new federal transportation budget? Details, details...
  9. More miles of roads and gifts to corporations who might someday bring jobs -- don't be greedy asking for more.
  10. Right, it doesn't replace the sledding hill at all. During the presentation to the planning committee of city council, I think the developer said that the current path down the right side of the sledding hill isn't at a proper ADA slope, so they wanted to fix that, and the steps to the side of the sledding hill would provide a place to sit and watch kids sledding, or the sunset in the summer.
  11. Those painted bump-outs seem like an ideal spot for neighborhood cinder-block storage.
  12. The winning RFP/RFQ Submission for the Taylor Tudors is online and quite juicy. Check it out. https://www.clevelandheights.gov/1443/Taylor-Tudor-Plaza-Redevelopment
  13. Maybe Sands was the reason.
  14. Wow. Wow. And Wow. I hope the city posts the slide deck online, but this would be so amazing if it actually happens.

  17. So this legislation changes the penalty for fare evasion from a fourth-degree misdemeanor that brings "a fine of up to $250.00 and/or up to 30 days in jail" to a fourth-degree misdemeanor that brings a fine of $25 and no jail time. Not decriminalized yet, but at least we've gotten rid of the possibility of jail time. You still get a fourth-degree misdemeanor on your record for each occurrence.

For me, both Cleveland's Jim Brown and Cincinnati's Pete Rose are prime examples of the struggle to celebrate amazing actions on the field with reprehensible personalities off the field.
  19. Exactly. Environmental cleanup was one of the primary reasons I supported the "Opportunity" Corridor project.
  20. No, all I have is that link.
  21. This is a good history of Burke from 2002 and should be required reading for anyone considering redevelopment of Burke. Interesting that some ideas for the property are nearly 40 years old. 23. I'm guessing that the rent in this building is too high, that's why the brick-and-mortar businesses are leaving this building but not the area.
  24. This seems like something that a local school principal or school board can handle without interference from the state. (Wasn't local control a conservative position? You would think that conservative schools would be protesting this as well if they understood the potential consequences.) State legislators apparently are paid too well and have too much time on their hands that they need to invent crises. If this passes, I expect it will dramatically decrease the desirability of being a teacher -- now not only will you have parents raging at you for giving their precious a B- but now those angry parents are going to be suing you.
  25. There has been some discussion about what Bedrock is thinking re: Tower City and Amtrak. I thought KJP had given us some maps but couldn't find them. But I found a good synopsis of KJP's past thoughts on the question of bringing Amtrak into Tower City. Rather than come up with some convoluted way to get Amtrak into Tower City, it would be better to (1) bring CVSR to Tower City, (2) extend the Waterfront Line to make a downtown loop, and (3) build a new (and improved) Amtrak station near where it is now with an easy connection to the Waterfront Line/Downtown Loop to bring Amtrak riders into the city.
