Other States: Passenger Rail News
And that's why the 3C route would want to reduce the number of at-grade crossings as the speed increases. Who is running 100mph trains so far? NY. And Michigan. And Illinois. And Pennsylvania. And Ontario. Ohio, still the Hole in the Donut.

Would be nice if they did it on the 3C corridor....to separate all the crossings.

This is an amazing reduction in construction time -- "The $2.7 billion, 170-mile Brightline high-speed rail extension from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Orlando International Airport (OIA) will see the construction of a train tunnel in two weeks instead of almost one year" https://www.constructiondive.com/news/brightline-shaves-almost-a-year-from-florida-rail-project-using-precast-tun/584711/ There are some good videos on the website of the Italian inventors of this concept: https://www.petrucco.com/box-jacking/ Looks like they basically cast concrete overpasses next to a roadway or rail line, then dig out the space they need and move the pre-cast overpass into place. As a result, they don't have to disrupt the road/rail line any longer than it takes to move the pre-cast concrete into place and put the road/rail back on top.

Or they are not willing to risk their lives for part-time minimum-wage no-benefits.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Ridiculous that we still pay bar and restaurant so much less than non-tipped businesses. Add 15% to every bill, "tip included," and pay all workers a living wage. "Many places" are "struggling to find workers" because they don't pay enough or don't offer benefits (or both).

You make some very good points. Building extensively at such low density is expensive to service and maintain. Not ideal for the long-term. But if these kinds of homes are just one of a variety of housing types, the diversity of housing could be a plus in the short term.

Time for the original second tower!

Seems like we could use a dedicated passenger track for at least part of that route (with trains coming from Michigan to Chicago as well). Wish we could have more completely separate freight and passenger rails, but that's probably not practical.

Notre-Dame Cathedral Fire
Indeed. Although some old carpentry techniques were really good. Modern construction tends to require less labor (and thus is cheaper) but is not always better. A box built with screws vs dovetails.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
Do you distinguish between striped bike lanes and protected bike lanes? It seems to me that a protected bike lane can be fantastic for the less-experienced, more timid, or elderly cyclist -- it FEELS safer, whether it actually is or not. A striped bike lane on the street doesn't really help anyone -- BUT -- it's a huge reminder to drivers "oh, there are cyclists here" and if we can't fit a separated bike lane in, a painted bike line at least provides that marketing function and could increase public awareness of cyclists until a separated bike lane could be provided. But for the experienced cyclist, fast commuter, etc., a wider street and more frequent street-cleaning would be far better than a bike lane. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts as an experienced cyclist.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
If we could get rid of fares altogether, or only police fare evasion at turnstiles, that would allow the transit police to focus on policing in the stations and on the trains/buses.

Amen. If we cannot afford to maintain what we have, it is fiscally irresponsible to be adding to to the state's maintenance obligations. And encouraging inefficient sprawl, etc.

City's offer to buy Millikin school building for $1 to explore development rejected by the school board. Off the table for now. https://www.cleveland.com/community/2020/09/ch-uh-school-board-rejects-dollar-offer-from-cleveland-heights-takes-millikin-property-off-market.html

General Transit Discussion
Reading that article again gave me a thought. What if RTA did a study about the best way to complete a "downtown loop," present two route options for people to vote on, select the winning option, and then put a levy on the ballot to build it -- would the community approve funding for that specific project? (psst, RTA -- it's worth a try!)

Benesch will not wait forever. The longer the delay, the higher the risk that they move on.

Richmond Heights: Belle Oaks (Richmond Town Square Redevelopment)
Looks like mixed-use-lite. Still a heck of a lot of parking lot to be a true community.

Cleveland: Transit Ideas for the Future
How about some improved transit where there's already development -- completing the downtown loop?!?

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
Do you have a link to those plans (even if redirecting to another thread)? I'm curious to know what is missing, and I doubt that I'm alone in that. ?

Nighttown posted a nice aerial view on Facebook. The northwest side of the parking garage and central line of support columns are pretty clearly outlined. The south side of the parking garage will border the back of Nighttown and the temporary parking lot adjacent to Nighttown.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I wonder what the holdup was in reaching an agreement on a memorandum of understanding after so much time. My guess is that Cleveland Heights will go back to the drawing board here. Put out a new RFP and expand the site from Meadowbrook to Cedar. I believe the last RFP was for the Lee-Meadowbrook property only, and it was during negotiations for the MOU with the winning RFP bidder that the parking lot off Cedar was added to the project. The two vacant buildings on Cedar (old veterinary hospital and beauty school) are the only obstacles to that. (And remember that there were some issues with an ATT easement across the Lee-Meadowbrook property that remains an ongoing problem.)

Cleveland: Downtown: The Lumen
The food at Zaytoon was great. It's location on Huron was not. It was just a bit too far from the activity on Euclid. Sittoo's opening was the beginning of the end for Zaytoon, unfortunately. Location, location, location -- I don't see much changing here even with a new concept until that section of Huron sees more activity.
