  1. Now if we could get a high-speed rail line between the two....
  2. Naming rights are probably for sale.
  3. I kind of agree, although many of these older houses have irreplaceable architectural details inside. The hardwoods used in their construction are not replaceable. This is particularly true of the pre-1940 construction, not so true of construction beginning with the post-war boom.
  4. I hope that this issue will spur medical professional groups and consumer groups to get together to draft a better referendum.

Here they come: Vegas, Helsinki, Michigan, and China (bus-train hybrid) -- http://fortune.com/2017/01/14/vegas-self-driving-bus/ https://www.curbed.com/2017/6/15/15810912/driverless-self-driving-bus-finland-helsinki-transportation https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/21/15848098/michigan-driverless-shuttle-navya-mcity https://www.techspot.com/news/69593-china-unveils-electric-road-train-runs-painted-tracks.html
  6. I disagree. Speed limits are almost irrelevant to how fast people will drive on a road. http://www.sehinc.com/news/truth-about-speed-limits-explained-engineer I suggest a low-cost trial -- lower the speed limit and increase citations for six weeks (and what will that cost -- I'd bet that traffic tickets will not cover the extra police presence). And then put potted plants at spaced intervals on opposing sides of the street. Park cars on the street. Put some bike racks in parking spaces on the street. Narrow that street down, create more distractions not fewer, and after another six weeks evaluate which approach had more success in slowing the cars.
  7. The sewer district is using tunnel-boring machines to build overflow retention tunnels to handle storm surges. I would love it if RTA was ready with a plan to put those tunnel boring machines to use building subway tunnels once the sewer district was done with them.
  8. I agree. These are all well-established business districts. We ought to have established bus/shuttle stations at each. Something larger, nicer, and more permanent-looking than the RTA-provided plastic boxes.
  9. I'm sure many UO'rs would be inclined to support that! :wink2:
  10. New shuttle service connecting Coventry in Cleveland Heights to Little Italy http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1115396448413&ca=6fa9148d-8516-49d0-9318-1e546a2316fa Starting October 1 a new shuttle service will begin running routes from Coventry to University Circle and Little Italy. See www.universitycircle.org/circlelink.
  11. What's going on on Stokes Blvd, between Carnegie and Cedar? The old NAACP building has been torn down; is a new development planned?

The author makes some good points and I think many are applicable to the Democratic Party. But while the Democratic Party may be left of the Republican Party, and Liberals may often be associated with a faction within the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party often is not liberal (h/t KJP). The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is probably right of where the center used to be. I was struck by this passage, which I think really says where the Democratic Party has gone off the rails for many people -- too many promises and too few results that actually benefit the "little guy." In my opinion, this also shows why Bernie Sanders (not a Democrat) has been so popular with liberals in the Democratic Party. Many liberals are disappointed in or otherwise turned off by the positions taken by the Democratic Party establishment, the "cocktail party liberals" mentioned in the article.
  13. I would rather have 6-story buildings on all of the downtown surface parking lots first.
  14. Roadway design determines traffic speed more than changing the signs. http://usa.streetsblog.org/2017/08/08/the-state-with-the-deadliest-traffic-in-america-admits-its-high-speed-streets-have-to-change/
  15. I loved the Noodlecat concept, but not at that price point.
  16. Thanks KJP -- great work. I have some questions though. E17th is pretty much an alley between Euclid and Chester. Would it be better to route the line down E18th where there's more activity? Also, I'm concerned that a line that close to the theaters would create a traffic mess at post-theater time, particularly with the garages on E17 and E14. I'm also concerned about the opening of the trench as the line comes up into Gateway. What does the open part of the trench do to the pedestrian experience there, and how will that impact the buildings next to the open portion of the trench? Auto traffic will certainly be impacted for those buildings as well. Is there a good way to mitigate that? Would it be feasible to just have a station at Gateway (as you (KJP) have proposed in the past), and run the line further south to turn past CCC and St. Vincent before turning north again to close the loop? Let's hope someone with money and influence can get behind completing the loop. I really think it would make a difference in traffic and the ability to get around downtown without a car.
  17. The Federal Highway Trust Fund has been insolvent for longer than that, and there has been a nearly continuous "replenishment" of the fund with general revenue money since 2008. https://www.enotrans.org/wp-content/uploads/HTF-Bailouts-thru-FAST.pdf The trust fund seems to have lost its usefulness. I don't think we would notice if it was abolished.
  18. I've traveled successfully over 600 miles in multiple countries, both in Europe and in Asia, so I know it can be done -- although 600 miles might be pushing it in some situations, I agree. And because flying is becoming a more and more miserable experience, and I can eat/sleep/work on the train, I can get far more accomplished, more comfortably, than if I drove.

Check out Tavern Company (formerly The Colony) and the New Heights Grill in Cedar-Lee area, and BW3 in the Cedar-Fairmount area -- all are fairly kid-friendly with lots of TVs.
  20. This would be a great opportunity to create a neighborhood "downtown" center near the rapid to spur redevelopment in the area. Even if a bunch of the lots right on the OC become light-industrial suburban-setback and -density-type development, those people will want to have a place to go to have lunch, do some shopping, take care of some dry-cleaning -- create a PLACE -- like E.4th's renaissance -- where people want to be (and preferably near the rapid) and I think we would see a lot more private development in the surrounding area.
  21. It makes sense in the access to jobs calculation, but how much will it increase expenses vs. revenues? In other words, is this a sustainable expansion?
  22. I wonder what the return on those investments will be....
  23. Actually, I don't consider the eastbound Lake Shore out of Cleveland to be awful timing. It leaves Cleveland just before 6 a.m., Buffalo at 9 a.m., gets to Albany at about 3 p.m. and Boston at 8 p.m. Not awful if you have a dinner meeting or you're just traveling for leisure, perhaps, but if you're trying to get to somewhere north of Boston for an afternoon meeting, the Lake Shore won't work unless you travel a day early. That is significant.
  24. The most recent foray into seeking an expansion is to take one of the NYSDOT-sponsored Empire Service trains that runs between New York City and the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area and instead run it west to Chicago. Too late for this trip -- but looking into it I could have driven to Buffalo and taken the train to Albany (Maple Leaf, noon - 7pm) (Empire BuilderService, 7am - noon) and rented a car for the last leg east. Thanks NY, I'll have to keep that in mind!
  25. I was trying to get to New England for a family event and was reminded how extremely frustrating the current Lakeshore Limited schedule is for Cleveland, and probably every other city between Chicago and New York. I had to be there at a certain time and needed to get back home ASAP. I wish someone would find the money to temporarily run another train 12 hours off the current schedule to see what the ridership would be. I can't be the only one frustrated with airlines and eager for a competitive alternative. :whip:
