Question: Are there permanent residences in the nuCLEus? Meaning there are going to be for sale residences not just rentals. Of which, do not those people buying the residence have to pay a property tax? My point being, the owner of the whole building receives a TIF. The schools receive their $360,000 for the lot, plus, any individual property tax from permanent residents in said building. Or do property taxes not apply to sale units in a building owned by another group?

And that will be the most important part, explain how the rest will be spent. I did an internship with APD and the Summit County jail is horribly outdated (and that was 10 years ago). Part of the taxes raised will go to fix the jail, the better part of revenue raised by the sales tax increase goes to services, the arena is kind of a bonus from it and a potential revenue generated. Assuming the normal impact, a few new restaurants, specialty stores, more foot traffic, that would just kick right back into the revenue stream. The rate hike would still leave Summit County below the majority, 61 counties have a sales tax of 7.25% or higher.

Apparently County is pushing too, Nov 4th ballot issue to be put before council for a sales tax increase to build a 9000 seat arena across from Canal Park.

Why would you build a hotel near the lake front and have no rooms facing the lake? You could have built this so that half the room were lake view and half the rooms were city view. This design is awful. The whole thing needs turned 90 degrees.

I don't understand how the same 8 people always have negative comments on anything happening in Akron? If you hate what is going on so much, change it or leave.

Anyone have any other info on the Thistledown move? I have seen a couple of articles and from I've seen they are saying moving it to the CAK area or Mogadore?

My understanding was that UA had to fund the whole thing themselves from the get go (which is why the new education building was put on hold). Additionally it shows where the state's priorities are lacking (if funding was pulled) because the Law schools accreditation is contingent on improving or replacing the current building.

Well it also said it would have several studio apartments. I think the studios are what will be directed at the YP more so than the "per bed" concept.

^^Considering the proximity to Lock 3 and Canal Park, that is a very creative idea to have the Cafe under the bridge. That is the perfect place to have as a stopping point for cyclists and walkers.

In the grand scheme of things a county based system will work best. But if you are looking for the best possible solution, it is to combine similar districts. You don't add things to a Cleveland, or Columbus, you consolidate the other districts around them. I'm in Summit County. There is no reason for there to be 8 districts in the southern part of the County. Springfield, Lake, Mogadore, Manchester, Copley, Green, Coventry, Northwest. These areas could easily be consolidated. The primary reason for this is to get rid of redundant positions. Having 614 districts means 614 superintendants, and who know's how many paid school board members. You could keep the individual districts and reduce the admin down to 88 super's, make the school board an elected position for each district, and let the most "successful" district be the model for the curriculum in each district.

^ Agreed. Until additional news is available arena talk should stop. As a single point, University Park was formed and is still partially funded by the University of Akron and was and is Dr. Proenza's pet project. Nothing that UPA does is outside of what UA wants.
