Akron: Random Development and News
Yeah Cuyahoga Falls really let the school board "screw the pooch" on this one. What part of $250,000 is more than 0 did they miss out on? What because you want it 50/50 so that the city ends up defaulting on the debt? They were also going to build housing in parts of that project and that revenue wouldn't have been part of the "in lieu of taxes" proposal, it was just for the retail. Have fun getting money from the dirt piles that are there.

Akron: Random Development and News
If you have any other information on this please share. I had heard several "theories" and rumors on something being attached to the Greystone or something being built around Canal Park. Mostly though I had heard that hotels were reluctant to do anything without a commitment from the city to get more people downtown (meaning shows, expos, arena?)

Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
I'm not 100% sure. I know they are also doing a feasibility study to replace the Nursing school. So it is possible, but most of the building was built in the 70's so I don't know that it couldn't be retrofitted. Then again there is a major push by Curtis to have a cohesive architecture style to the campus.

Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
So, anyway... It is looking more and more like the University will be building a new Law Building. They have already put out the bid requests for an Architect/Engineer and a Construction Manager. The building will be across the tracks from CBA on the site of the current Buckingham (Center for Continuing Education). It is likely that Wolf Ledges will become a Pedestrian Mall like Buchtel Commons. Most importantly it make Blake super happy because it will be "on campus proper".

Bloomington, Indiana: Seat of Monroe County
Love Bloomington. My father-in-law has a condo on Lake Monroe, my wife and I spent a 4 day weekend out there and it's great. Southern Indiana is very picturesque and well worth a trip for all the natural wonders out there. IU and Bloomington itself are both great places to move around and there are a lot of things to do.

Unions: News & Discussion
To say "when the times were good" is to reject the reality that the only reason the times were good, is because of the union. What is killing us is that as globalization becomes larger (and there is nothing wrong with globalization) and systems become faster we broaden ourselves to a supply of workers that do not yet have a definition of a standard of living. The fact of the matter is that we are becoming a society of minimum manufacturing. We need to start developing more tech here to increase manufacturing jobs. What is killing governments (bankrupting California) is the concept of stealing companies from states like Ohio, Michigan, PA by offering corporations free land and no taxes. That causes growth, but eventually the growth leads to the state having too many commitments, roads, free education (in the case of CA), sewer, water, rail and other infrastructure costs. Increased expenses and diminishing revenues because you cater too much to the corporation and then you are in the spot CA is in. Just like you say a lot of growth in the south right now, because they have no taxes. In 15 years those states are going to be in for a rude awakening. Salaries will grow to the point where companies begin to rethink strategy and look for cheaper labor. Populations will grow to the point that infrastructure costs outweigh the tax revenue taken in and the states will have huge budget defecits.

Survey: Most Ohio college students plan to leave
Well I graduated and stayed. Didn't quite hit my field of study dead on but close. Now I'm back getting my MBA and again plan to stay. Why? Because when it really comes down to it, there are people who run to jobs and then there are people who try and create jobs. I want to be a person that tries to create jobs. Ohio is excellent, it has a ton of resources, a below average cost of living and the ability to produce decent amounts of cheap energy. Once the realization of cost and lack of resources hit in these "rapid growth" states companies are going to see that it is more expensive to do business down there than in the north. They are trying to dodge tax and wages and those things can only be dodged for so long.

Kayaking/Canoeing and general small watercraft recreation
I'm an Akronite, I was curious if anyone on here had much experience with kayaking/canoeing (mostly kayak though). I know that Kent opened a launch in their area and there was a company out of one of the Cleveland Sub-burbs that ran tours. The main questions I have is how much of the Cuyahoga is navigatable? Also why is this not more publicized. We have a lot of great rivers in the state, and some very nice lakes. I live in the Portage Lakes and it is a ton of interconnected water.

Is your money with Key, Huntington, Fifth/Third....
I'm with FirstMerit too. Worked there for a year after graduating college, but have had my accounts with them since I was 18. Reality Checking is one of the best concepts ever and FirstMerit finances a lot of projects and sponsors a lot of charity events. In fact, FirstMerit donated a cool million to the University of Akron's Infocision Stadium project in exchange for naming rights to club level.

Akron: Mayor Plusquellic Recall Election
That is all Mendenhall does. He was a waste at councilman, now all he does his waste tax payer dollars fighting "injustices". Like his wife getting a speeding ticket from a speedzone cam, or trying to get rid of a horrible mayor who had done nothing but improve the community. Akron's bond rating is Aa and it's debt to income ratio is over 40%. I suppose Mendenhall won't be happy until the city is dying like Toledo and Youngstown.

Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
I had inquired about that a few months ago. The official response is that they have every intention of doing the addition. It is needed, they just haven't been able to grow the charitable donations for the business school as quickly as anticipated. Mostly because the athletic department has tapped several major contributors as of late. (thank you Infocision and Summa for all you have done for the school)
