  1. Will GE at The Banks fall short of jobs goal? Is Nelson Peltz to blame? CINCINNATI - General Electric Co.’s promise to create 1,800 jobs at the Banks by the end of this year is looking less likely, thanks in part to Procter & Gamble Co. agitator Nelson Peltz. The New York hedge fund manager, who started a proxy fight to gain a board seat at P&G, also owns about $2 billion in GE stock. Peltz argued for months the company’s costs are too high. In March, after meeting with Peltz, GE announced a plan to reduce expenses by $2 billion. In June, Jeffrey Immelt announced his retirement as CEO. Immelt is the Finneytown native who brought the Global Operations Center to Cincinnati. Immelt’s successor, John Flannery, told Wall Street analysts June 12 he will conduct “a comprehensive review” to address areas of concern to investors “around our cash flow, around our cost structures.” In July, he said GE is “taking a hard look at our corporate spending, going through a zero-based budget exercise on all of our functions.” Cont

  3. Rick Pitino 'effectively fired' amid University of Louisville FBI basketball investigation Rick Pitino appears to be out as University of Louisville men's basketball coach after the FBI alleged in a criminal complaint that coaches with the program participated in a scheme to pay recruits' families. Steve Pence, Pitino's attorney, told the Courier-Journal early Wednesday afternoon that the coach has been placed on administrative leave but has been "effectively fired." Pitino may have been put on administrative leave because under his contract, if he is fired he must be given 10 days' prior notice and “an opportunity to be heard.” Cont

  8. CPD is working Walnut at 3rd, 4th, & 5th streets. It'd be nice if this year they actually discouraged blocking the box and assisted the streetcar through these busy intersections when necessary.

To be honest, I'd use it. In the one game I went to this year, where the announced attendance was 18,191 (43% of capacity), I waited in line for 1.5 innings just to get some nachos.

The mayor’s pit bull... City Manager Harry Black misused funds, retaliated against Cincinnati police captain, suit alleges CINCINNATI -- City Manager Harry Black is running city purchases through a company his close friend owns, according to a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday. Cincinnati Police Capt. Jeffrey L. Butler, who claims Black retaliated against him for a different issue, alleges the arrangement effectively requires the city pay a 15-percent markup. Records show Al Foxx, who Butler claims is Black's close friend, incorporated the company in Ohio in May 2016. Butler says Foxx and Black worked together for the city of Baltimore, Maryland. According to news site Baltimore Brew, Foxx left his job as that city's public works director in January 2014; Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley hired away Black, Baltimore's finance director, about six months later. Foxx said he was moving here and would work at a construction and facilities maintenance company with a relative, Baltimore Brew reported. The use of Foxx's company, Butler says, is just an example of what he calls Black's pattern of misusing funds and abusing power. Black dismissed Butler's claims as frivolous, calling the lawsuit a personnel matter involving "an unhappy employee." Cont

One of several reasons I've stopped supporting the Reds, the baseball season is just too long. And here is MLB making it even longer! Reds' 2018 Opening Day will be earliest ever Nationals come to town March 29 CINCINNATI – The Reds’ 2018 Opening Day will be the earliest ever. The Reds will host the Washington Nationals on Thursday, March 29 – three days before Easter - according to next season’s schedule announced Tuesday. Time is TBA. The early date is the result of a new scheduling format that adds a week to the season and gives teams three to four additional off days, according to MLB. All teams will open on March 29 and end Sept. 30. The previous earliest Reds' Opening Day was March 31 in 1998, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2014. The Nationals have never played here on Opening Day, though their predecessors, the Montreal Expos, opened here in 1970, '87, '93 and '96. Cont
  15. On Cincinnati streetcar's one-year anniversary, leaders thinking toward the future CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati's streetcar hits its one-year birthday on Saturday. While city leaders can point to a number of successes with the controversial Downtown transit system, they also have to sort out a lot of questions about its future -- most notably funding and expansion. The streetcar -- launched Sept. 9, 2016 -- has had growing pains. Ticket machines initially weren't working properly. An already congested Downtown has caused delays in arrival times. And a slow winter caused many to question whether or not people are actually using the $150 million investment. There were also questions about ridership, delayed schedules and a number of technical issues that some say weren't expected. While many of those issues were addressed as they arose, a big question remains: What needs to happen to keep the system running? WCPO Insiders can read more about operation of the streetcar moving forward.
  16. Former streetcar executive: Why Vine Street route to Uptown could work The potential route to Uptown for the Cincinnati Bell Connector streetcar along Vine Street has taken a beating over the last half decade, but the city’s former project executive still believes it could work. Gov. John Kasich’s transportation department slashed state funding for the streetcar project in 2011, dooming the Uptown route, which would have connected the city’s two major jobs centers and the fast-growing neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine. Under the city’s original plan, the streetcar route would have made a left on Vine and traveled up to the hill to an East Corry Street stop. The prospects for the extension have gotten worse in the meantime. In 2015, the Ohio Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling requiring the city to pay for the movement of utilities in the path of the streetcar, meaning the city could have to pay at least $40 million to Duke Energy to move its main trunk line before a single piece of steel was embedding into the ground. And one of the streetcar’s biggest supporters, John Schneider[/member], has come out against the route, saying narrow Vine Street would mean an uncomfortable ride and that planners should instead explore building a rapid transit route that would feature a tunnel under Mount Auburn to connect Uptown and downtown. 17. The announced on August 24: "Effective September 5th, 2017 new pricing will roll out for our Atlanta shuttle. The new price will be just $449 round trip! Take advantage of this new pricing from either Cincinnati or Cleveland, OH." I flew to Atlanta on a Thursday in August and there were 19 people onboard. Return flight was a Monday and there were 11. Brother-in-law just arrived yesterday from Atlanta and there were 9 people on his flight. Their service is so much more convenient than flying into/out of ATL. I hope that it is profitable and they keep the destination.

"There is no set timeline for finding a new facility at this point. The organization still has about six years on its existing lease and overall the ballet is “very healthy” from a financial stand point. Fundraising for a new facility has not started at this point and it’s unclear what the total cost would be."
