Cincinnati: Retail News
Fire ravages Downtown store Cincinnati fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire they say destroyed the inside a Downtown business early Tuesday. Bang & Olufsen at 6 W. Fourth St. lost an estimated $100,000 to $250,000 in equipment, they said. The business sells high-end electronics. Fire officials said crews fought two or three Dumpster fires when they first arrived and then found a man in an alley and another inside one of the buildings, with his dog, on the second floor. Cont

Cincinnati Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
Per the Business Courier, EXCLUSIVE: Local craft brewery closing its doors: "Ei8ht Ball's assets are being purchased by a new brewery, which will brew and operate out of the same space but not use the Ei8ht Ball brand. Lewis was not able to disclose who would be taking over the space. Most of Ei8ht Ball's employees – four full-time and 10 part-time – will be hired on by the new brewery. Only the sales manager and head brewer will not remain. Head brewer Mitch Dougherty is leaving to pursue his own brewery."

Ei8ht Ball Brewery to close Ei8ht Ball Brewing in Newport is closing. It will serve its last pints in mid- to late February. The brewery, a division of New Riff Distilling, LLC, opened in late 2013 inside the Party Source. Its closure will allow New Riff to focus exclusively on whiskey and spirits, according to representatives from the company. “Ei8ht Ball was incredibly successful as a small niche brewery, and we were selling all the beer we could make at our current facility,” New Riff Distilling president and owner Ken Lewis said in a new release, which noted that the brewery has 28 beers on tap and has doubled production each year it has been in business. "But the craft beer industry is tightening, and we made the decision to focus on distilling as we prepare for our first batch of bourbon in 2018. We have a unique position in the Kentucky bourbon market, but we’re less unique in the craft beer world. We’re going to narrow our focus and let others do craft beer.” Cont

Cincinnati: 2017 Mayoral Election
Cranley aide: Winburn's claims are 'false' Mayor John Cranley's office fired back Wednesday at Councilman Charlie Winburn for accusing the city solicitor of misusing her power to help the mayor get reelected. Cranley's spokeswoman, Holly Stutz Smith, defended Solicitor Paula Boggs Muething and described Winburn's allegations as "categorically false." The response came hours after Winburn claimed the solicitor's office created a bogus criminal investigation to hurt him politically as he considers a run for mayor. Cont

Cranley, via former co-worker Paula Boggs Muething, attempting to keep Republican money flowing to his campaign... Charlie Winburn: Cincinnati city solicitor framed my aide Transparency and openness should always be at the forefront for every public official. I am reminded of a quote from Justice Louis Brandeis that “sunlight is the best disinfectant” to government waste and abuse. On Jan. 5, The Enquirer reported on boxes from my office being taken from the basement of City Hall by the police department ("FBI took boxes from Winburn's office”). I’ve taken appropriate steps to ensure that my office has been as transparent as possible with what we know about this situation, what are in these boxes and why they would have been taken. We have taken great measures to be transparent and disclose all that we know regarding the boxes. The same cannot be said for the city solicitor’s office. Here’s what I know. Despite news reports, no one has taken boxes from my office, no raid has occurred on my office, and no one from the FBI has even been in my office. In early December, my office aide filled several boxes with old newspapers, notes and memos so that she could take them home and catch up on old news and work. She placed them in the basement of City Hall with the permission of the custodial staff to make room in our office until she was ready to take them home. As a senior citizen, she takes public transportation to work, which means she has to arrange a ride specifically to take anything more than her bag home. Two weeks later, they were missing and she was told that they were thrown away. I knew nothing about these boxes until I got a call from The Enquirer asking about them. Cont.

Cincinnati: 2017 Mayoral Election
Can Richardson win mayoral primary? Rob Richardson Jr. made a good first impression this week. A diverse, energetic crowd showed up for his mayoral campaign kickoff event. Richardson then told about 200 supporters and the media that he's the outsider in Cincinnati's May primary against Mayor John Cranley and City Councilwoman Yvette Simpson. It was a clear message: If you're mad at City Hall, I'm the only candidate who can bring a fresh approach. It set political insiders abuzz, mostly because Richardson is a first-time candidate for public office and no one really knew what to expect. The former University of Cincinnati board chairman's stellar launch prompted some to wonder: Can Richardson take down Simpson in the primary? Cont

Is it FC Cincy vs. 'silent assassins' for MLS? There's a reason some industry insiders refer to the Tampa Bay Rowdies as the "silent assassins" of the race for Major League Soccer expansion. The Rowdies are a relative newcomer to the mainstream MLS expansion conversation after formally announcing their intent in December, but don't misinterpret that for a hurried and premature MLS pitch. The Rowdies' announcement came after years of behind-the-scenes work and investment from the team and Rowdies Chairman and CEO Bill Edwards, who has his club knocking on the door of MLS. By the way, he doesn't care if you hear the Rowdies knocking or not. Cont

It's unclear why John Lee decided to resign from Transdev. Lee took over as general manager of the project during the first week of operation in September. The former manager John Claflin stepped down due to a health issue, but stayed through the streetcar's opening weekend, according to release from the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority. Cont
