Check out responses to Courier's Cincinnati streetcar survey Business Courier - by Dan Monk - Date: Friday, March 25, 2011, 12:33pm EDT - Last Modified: Friday, March 25, 2011, 2:40pm EDT If Cincinnati doesn't build a streetcar, we should use some of the money we save to buy diapers for police horses or build Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown a new home – in another city. Those were some of the tongue-in-cheek responses (we think) in a survey of business leaders and Business Courier readers, who were asked to weigh in on whether the city should plunge ahead with its $128 million public transit project. Seventy-three percent of the 1,500 readers who responded said the city should build the streetcar, while 70 percent of business leaders said it's time to halt the project. "An endless money pit which will require continued funding each year because it will never pay for itself," wrote Paul Verst, CEO of Verst Group Logistics Inc. FYI, he's the one who suggested the new home for Mike Brown, too. Cont

It's not even greater cincinnati- it's just outside of columbus. Springboro is a Dayton suburb and just under 40 miles away from downtown Cincinnati via I-75.

Close. It was ODOT's staff which made the recommendation to the TRAC, which is an independent review board within ODOT. I believe the TRAC has only one staffperson: a coordinator/scheduler. Thanks for the clarification. There were 2-3 "staffers", just unsure who reported where.

Why is the Enquirer saying Lippert makes an anti-streetcar majority on council? Is that a 4-4 tie and Qualls would break any ties? Help me out here. With Bortz abstaining and ties essentially equalling a no vote, council is labeled anti-streetcar.

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
Cygnus replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentJeff Ruby might not reopen Waterfront restaurant 'I don't know if I want to stay in the floating restaurant business,' he says Peggy O’Farrell and Paul McKibben - 12:34 PM, Mar. 13, 2011 COVINGTON - Waterfront owner Jeff Ruby said Sunday he’s not sure if he’ll reopen his floating restaurant, which tore away from its Ohio River moorings Friday night with nearly 100 people on board. “I don’t know if I want to stay in the floating restaurant business,” Ruby said, watching from the nearby Marriott Hotel as towboats maneuvered the damaged Waterfront into the old Covington Landing. “I don’t know if I want to sell it. I don’t know if I want to relocate it.” Ruby, who has operated the Waterfront for about 25 years, said the costs of maintaining the restaurant, removing debris and insurance will figure into his decision. He estimated the cost of just moving the restaurant and securing it at the old Covington Landing “in the high six figures.” cont

Anti-Streetcar Effort Purposely Misleads Voters By Kevin Osborne - Wednesday, March 9,2011 In all likelihood, Cincinnati residents this fall might once again be casting their votes on a streetcar-related ballot item. The same groups that tried — and failed — to block the city’s planned $128 million streetcar system through a ballot issue in November 2009 are busy collecting signatures on a petition for another try. Back then, the effort was known as Issue 9. If approved, it would’ve required a public vote before taxpayer money was used for any rail-related project, not just the streetcar. The groups behind that effort, the Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes (COAST) and the NAACP’s local chapter, had said they specifically crafted the broadly written wording in case city officials tried to rename the streetcar project and call it something else to skirt the restriction on a technicality. No matter: Voters soundly rejected the issue, 56 percent to 44 percent. Now, COAST and the NAACP are trying again. This time, they’re joined by the police and firefighters unions, who are under the mistaken impression that canceling the project might somehow prevent possible future layoffs. (We’ll get to why that’s not true in a moment.) cont

Piss poor performance last night... but in other Big East news: Nick Lachey Premieres Song For Big East We all know Nick Lachey is a big sports fan…. so he’s written an anthem for the Big East Conference to debut Saturday during the Big East basketball tournament finals at Madison Square Garden. His song “Last One Standing” was written specifically for the Big East. “As a Cincinnati native, I have had a passion for college athletics and the University of Cincinnati,” Lachey said in a statement released today. “I have grown a strong affinity to the Big East since it joined the conference, and think that this song represents the true test that these inspiring student-athletes face by competing in this league.” cont

I'd like to see a couple concrete poles protecting the Main Street corral. I can see it being taken out fairly easily by a tipsy driver or someone swerving to avoid a pedestrian (aka jaywalker), etc.

While I would love for the tower to be started, 14-15 floors for only 150 people... First Financial to keep headquarters in downtown Cincinnati Business Courier - by Lucy May, Courier Senior Staff Reporter - Date: Thursday, March 10, 2011, 11:21am EST First Financial CEO Claude Davis announced the decision at a news conference at Cincinnati City Hall with Mayor Mark Mallory and Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dohoney. The bank moved its headquarters to temporary space downtown in late 2009. It currently occupies less than 45,000 square feet and has fewer than 100 employees downtown. Davis said the bank will nearly double that space, although he wouldn’t say exactly where downtown. That announcement will come soon, he said. cont
