  4. Giant garages could rise up in downtown Cincinnati Business Courier - by Dan Monk - Thursday, October 21, 2010, 12:12pm EDT Public and private investors are marshalling resources for a pair of garage projects that could bring more than 2,500 new parking spaces to the eastern edge of downtown. The new garages, which could cost more $40 million to build, are not likely to open before 2012. That means they would be too late to help an estimated 1,500 monthly parkers who will lose access at Broadway Commons when construction on the Harrah’s downtown casino begins in November. But new garage construction on any time frame is welcome news to those in charge of filling downtown office space. cont.

  11. From the article: While Tucson officials hope the project will revitalize the city's downtown, Anthony Rufolo, an urban planning expert in Portland, Ore., said the urban streetcar system in place there hasn't panned out. "Transportation could be provided more effectively and at a lower cost with buses," said Rufolo, a professor of urban studies and planning at Portland State University. "It's been a huge disaster; we are running into a situation where there is no money for buses."

George Psihountakis has been operating Mythos restaurants in the area since 1981, but he said the economy has forced him to think about closing all of his downtown eateries. The cost of running all three restaurants under a deep recession and deeper debt has Psihountakis and his partners considering all options. Investor Angelo Gallina said the company owes too much in debt.

  18. NAACP plans ballot initiative on casino money By Jane Prendergast • [email protected] • October 6, 2010 Cincinnati's NAACP plans a ballot initiative next year that would allow all city residents to vote on how the $20 million expected annually from the new casino should be spent. Because Cincinnati City Council decided last week without a public hearing how to divvy up some of the casino proceeds, the NAACP and Citizens Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes intend to offer their own spending plan for taxpayers to vote on. Council invited the ballot measure by not allowing more input, NAACP Cincinnati chapter President Christopher Smitherman said Wednesday. cont.
