Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
^It looks like all of the reporting comes from the Blade with this at the end of the article: "The Block News Alliance consists of the Post-Gazette, The Blade of Toledo, Ohio, and television station WDRB in Louisville, Ky. Tom Troy is a reporter for The Blade. Blade reporter Michelle Liu contributed."

Parma: Development and News
I honestly know very little about Parma, but a quick check on Wikipedia (for what that is worth) doesn't paint such a bad picture. Add to that Parma Hts...which I've always heard is more desirable, is right nearby. The city seems to have strengths to build on to reinvent itself into a modern 21st century city with some creative thinking. Checking random streets on google maps, there's nice infrastructure...homes, sidewalks and streets in good repair, buried power lines, old growth trees, decent to well performing public and private schools, close to downtown, good interstate access...etc. I guess I am kind of in the middle on this development as well, but part of me thinks maybe they should think outside the standard big box configuration....nothing flashy, but better planned. It's a unique city, with strong ethnic roots, local pride, and interesting quirks lacking in newer suburbs. It's been beaten down and made fun of way more than it deserves and has strong assets to build on....which kinda sounds like...Cleveland! With some good new housing and retail options, they may even win back empty nesters that moved to other nearby sprawl suburbs at some point. Quotes from Wikipedia: "Today, Parma's population has reached 81,601, though it remains one of the Cleveland area's top three destinations young adults (aged 22 to 34) are increasingly choosing as a place to live, along with Lakewood and downtown Cleveland[25] and was recently recognized by Businessweek as one of the best places to raise kids in Ohio." "The median income for a household in the city is $50,198, the median income for a family is $60,696 and the mean income for a family is $68,828. The per capita income for the city is $25,064. The poverty rate in the city is 10.2%. This is low in comparison to other large Ohio cities as well as the state's individual poverty rate of 15.4%." "Parma ranks as the third safest city in the United States with a population of 25,000 or more.[37] Parma has a crime index of 90 out of 100, making it safer than 90% of the cities in the United States with a violent crime rate of 0.69 per 1,000 residents and a non-violent crime rate of 5.57 per 1,000 residents.[38]"

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
She was hired away from Cleveland Public Schools...and in case anyone misses her The indictment of Barbara Byrd-Bennett—Mayor Rahm's front woman at CPS Appropriately, Mayor Emanuel's name isn't mentioned in the 43-page indictment on bribery charges handed down today by the feds against Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who was hired by the mayor to run the Chicago Public Schools. According to the feds, "Byrd-Bennett steered no-bid contracts worth more than $23 million" to Supes "in exchange for an expectation of hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks." Moreover, Supes "agreed to conceal the kickback money by funneling it into accounts set up in the names of two of Byrd-Bennett’s relatives." Furthermore, "a later agreement called for the funds to be paid to Byrd-Bennett in the form of a 'signing bonus' after her employment with CPS ended and the companies re-hired her as a consultant." http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2015/10/08/the-indictment-of-barbara-byrd-bennettmayor-rahms-front-woman-at-cps

Cleveland: Retail News
It'll be the only Zara between Philly and Chicago in the Northeast/Great Lakes I believe. Zara is extremely choosey about opening stores in the US due to the fact that they don't cater to larger people and openly say so, so it is kind of a big win for the region. Maybe TopShop does surprisingly well at Beachwood and they are following?

Cleveland: Population Trends
The city was also required by the state to lift it's requirement of city employees to live in the city in 2006. I imagine a glut of homes went up for sale in Kamm's and West Park when that happened. That may have offset any gains measured in this study. Lee-Miles probably took a similar hit with black city employees.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews were sent to the hospital grounds, at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Blvd., where a fire was quickly extinguished from the roof of the new cancer and neurology center still under construction....

The Decline of Shopping Malls
Belden Village in North Canton had a Higbee's, Halles, and Oneil's (May Company's Akron nameplate) and also a Stern and Mann's (Canton Dept store), and Sears at one point.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
It needs to be said that this store will probably get lower overall money spent per basket of items, but probably net the store a higher profit margin per basket of items...and therefore should be a success. So someone walks there and spends $30 or $40 a few times a week for a small bag of food, but what they buy is more "frivolous" or "impulse" than what a family in the burbs might buy. They will pay more (per item) for a package of 2 or 3 paper towels than a 12 pack bulk bargain. They will buy expensive cupcakes and prepared foods more, and pay less attention to sale items. I think that is the business model of this type of store. These shoppers are more likely to spend money on higher profit items two or three times a week compared to a suburban family filling up a minivan with a weeks worth of food. BTW, here in Chicago, stores like Target and Walgreen's charge more for certain items Downtown than they do in the North side neighborhoods, and even less in the South Side and Suburban stores. Even McDonalds does it. In one day I saw McDonalds in the summer advertising a soft serve cone on the sign Downtown for $.99, and $.79 by my house on the North Side, and $.50 in Pilsen. I guess it's perfectly legal to do so if the cost to run the store is more expensive. It seems it is only price fixing if competitors conspire to charge more in a market for certain things. Individual chains can price by the market they serve on a store by store basis.

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
^Despite that, I can say from experience that prices have gone up across the board Downtown, so it seems hotels are getting better rates in DT Cleveland now even if occupancy is down. It might be a wash....and not a negative. Do a quick search on Hotels.com or Hotwire. It's not the bargain it used to be, even in the dead of winter IMO.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^That's a good guess! And in case my earlier posting suggested that I thought IHG would pull out, I was more thinking that they already have a big presence, and success with the Clinic. I'd imagine that adding another boutique type option closer to the city center and on a dedicated line (the healthline) to the hospital would only be appealing to them and a way to get into a more mixed type traveler's market in Cleveland than strictly relying more on hospital clients. They wanted a hotel Indigo at one point across the street at the Breuer tower, so it works.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
No mention of what will happen with the Cleveland Kimpton, but IHG is pretty invested in Cleveland already... InterContinental to buy boutique hotel Kimpton InterContinental Hotels Group agreed to pay $430 million to buy boutique hotel operator Kimpton, in a deal meant to stock up on pricy hotels located in popular cities and resort locations. The all-cash deal will result in the acquisition of Kimpton’s 62 hotels with an additional 16 hotels in the pipeline. The company also operates 71 hotel-based destination restaurants and bars. IHG IHG 1.86% said it sees significant opportunities to further grow the Kimpton brand within the U.S. and to launch it globally. http://fortune.com/2014/12/16/intercontinental-buys-kimpton/

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
^Agreed Cleveland has too many lawns downtown, I thought that last time I was there. It doesn't seem natural, environmental or cost effective. There are better urban ways to do natural water seepage and green usable space that fit in better within a downtown environment than suburban style lawns. They are well cared for though, I'll give them that.
