ColDay 2012: I-64 > I-75 > I-90 > I-77 > I-76 > I-376 > PIT > DFW
3645, 3649, 3651, 3655, and 3657 Prospect Avenue. Unfortunately they sit all alone amongst blight pretty much. Wish Cleveland had more of it. They are mostly well taken care of though, went to a party in one in the 90's. The guy was head of Midwest Region Gap Stores.

In CLE: need advise with new business attire
Topman is a cheap store in the UK (priced more like H&M), and the quality shows it. In the US the prices are too high IMO...priced more like (or even higher than) Zara or Express with lower quality merchandise. A $700 Topman suit! They must be joking. MTS is right though, it is good for inspiration and trend spotting.

In CLE: need advise with new business attire
I get most of my stuff online these days (and I prefer UK styles/cuts), so here are a few of my favorites: ASOS: British site, but stuff seems to ship from Elizabeth NJ when ordered in the US: http://www.asos.com/?hrd=1 Great sales on dress and casual shoes (skip them for athletic...high UK prices even on sale). Look at shoe brands: Jeffrey West, Base London, Ted Baker, Ben Sherman To Boot NYC: Nordstroms carries these shoes: http://www.toboot.com/ TM Lewin: Good dress shirts, Great prices/sales. Note The "Fully Fitted" is the slimmest, even more so than "Slim Fit". If you don't see prices in USD....go all the way to the bottom of the page and click on "Change Region" http://www.tmlewin.co.uk/on/demandware.store/Sites-tmlusd-Site?geoip=geoip Charles Tyrwhitt: Good shirts/suits. Good inspiration for shoes that are business appropriate but are not too "chunky", "pointy"...etc http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/Default.aspx?q=||||||||||||||| Bookster: Excellent quality custom made classic British suits http://www.tweed-jacket.com/ Peter Werth: Good ideas/Inspiration http://www.peterwerth.co.uk/index.php Jack Threads: Good sales on up to date casual http://www.jackthreads.com/offerings DENIM: These are my long standing favorite go to brands for simple good fitting denim Ralph Lauren Rugby Vintage slim dark wash: Note, you can't get "Rugby" at any department store RL shop. You have to go to the few "Rugby" stores they have or order them online. They are not tight through the thigh, but have a straight leg narrower bottom. Best under $100 ($98) pair of jeans you can find IMO. http://www.rugby.com/shop/item.aspx?productId=11161369&categoryId=3771602&cp=3138868 A.P.C. New Standard Jeans. Raw Denim, so they take some breaking in. Also, they should not be machine washed often...if at all. http://uscheckout.apc.fr/browse.cfm/4,1675.html?nav=denim

Absolutely no pleats! Should be tailored to fit, the sack suit, baggy thing is way out of style...hence the no pleats. Find a good tailor and have it altered if needed. Double vented back is most in style right now, but make sure it is at least single vented. Non vented back screams '90s. Classic extra details, like an added ticket pocket (third pocket), or working buttons on the cuffs add sophistication and detail. Go for a three piece suit too, and wear it when in NYC....very in style now. Can be worn without the jacket or without the vest. Very versatile and will get you noticed. Make sure the vest is tailored to fit correctly...that can make or break the look. Women LOVE this look....trust me. Finally NO CHUNKY SHOES (Kenneth Cole type)!!!! "Substantial" shoe classics like Allen Edmonds or Churches are fine. No "Boot Cut" trousers either. Thinner cuffs are in....but just stay away from cuffs to be safe. If you are thin, wear a thinner tie like 3" (not skinny tie) It's all about complimenting your body, and looking slimmer and put together. The looks on "Mad Men" are very close to what is in style now. Tie bars, pocket squares and bowties are all very much in style as well.

NorthAndre's Hood
It is beautifully done....the glass enclosed 3 story wine cellar going up the middle with the spiral staircase is incredible! I love that they kept the marquee...and that is interesting about the floor, because I was trying to look at the structure and figure out how they leveled the floor without gutting the place....and I couldn't see any signs of the old sloping floor. It was pretty crowded and pushy though, so I didn't have a lot of time to really take a close look.

A Very Cool Walgreens Store
I do have to give it up for Walgreen's, some of their new stores are actually really well designed around Chicago with "out of the box" features like the shopping basket that can be carried with handles, or rolled around on wheels when you extend the handle. Also, the LED backlit shelving, and highly polished concrete flooring. This one in Wicker Park is amazing, and that new flagship on State St are first class for a mediocre drugstore. At a birthday party this summer (in Chicago), some of my snobby friends from NYC were commenting how Duane Reade stores in NYC had really upped their game and become really nice...not like "a crappy Walgreen's". I was happy (and smug) to tell them that their beloved Duane Reade was actually now owned by Chicago based (flyover country) Walgreen's...and that is probably why some have improved

NorthAndre's Hood
Great shots! I just went to the grand opening party of the Esquire (Del Frisco's). That place is enormous, somebody spent a ton of money on that space...it's really over the top. It's hard to even imagine the old theatre space that was in there. They had so much staff greeting you and servers trying to give you hors d'ourves it was kind of annoying. I don't think I have seen any restaurant in Chicago that large.

Higher Education
Not sure where to post this..but here goes: Where Illinois freshmen go Story: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-students-leaving-illlinois-20121129,0,2315720.story Table: http://media.apps.chicagotribune.com/tables/illinois-college-students.html More than 30,000 Illinois freshmen left the state to attend a college or university for the 2010 fall semester; many enrolled in neighboring midwestern states like Iowa, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. While University of Iowa has been a top destination for first-time Illinois students for the past decade, University of Missouri-Columbia has been steadily growing its freshmen contingent. In Fall 2011, almost 18 percent of the entering class came from Illinois, and this year, statistics from the university show that that number has grown to 21 percent. Ohio stats by percent high to low:

Corporate Headquarter Locations - Urban/Suburban
Notice, in the case of Walgreens and Sears, the entire company didn't move....but they realized they needed the option to be Downtown to compete for talent. Motorola Mobility and UAL did close the suburban HQ and move most everyone. The siren song of downtown as companies seek young tech workers http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20120609/ISSUE01/306099978/the-siren-song-of-downtown-as-companies-seek-young-tech-workers Motorola Mobility and Sara Lee Corp. are willing to trade the suburbs for the city because workers like Nina Bieliauskas, a 37-year-old manager in Sears Holdings Corp.'s e-commerce business, live downtown and want to work there, too. She left a consulting gig in Barrington and ditched her commute four years ago to work for Hoffman Estates-based Sears when it opened an office in the Loop. “To get back those three hours a day is huge,” says Ms. Bieliauskas, a user-experience manager. “I got rid of my car.” “Frankly, those (tech) folks love living downtown. That's where the talent pool is,” says Greg Wasson, CEO of Deerfield-based Walgreen Co., which has about 300 e-commerce workers in the Sullivan Center, where it set up shop in 2010..... In the highest demand are technology workers, especially web designers and mobile software developers, who tend to be younger and more likely to live in the city, recruiters say. Companies also have their sights on fresh college graduates and other young workers for jobs in sales, marketing and customer support. Sears, whose headquarters moved to Hoffman Estates from Chicago two decades ago, opened offices downtown in 2008 for its e-commerce team. Today it employs more than 500 people at two locations on State Street. It's not limited to tech workers. Petroleum giant BP PLC moved about 850 traders and others to the Loop from Naperville in 2010 to be closer to the city's trading firms “I don't know one young person who would think working in Skokie would be cool,” says Helen Tunea, a 30-year-old human resources manager at Ifbyphone who lives in the South Loop.

Corporate Headquarter Locations - Urban/Suburban
These are not just young people, there is also a subset of 30 and 40 somethings at the top of their game that don't want it either...and could be actively looking to leave and find something that better suits their lifestyle. Divorcee's , Gays, Single Older folks, and yes young 20 somethings. Everyone is not married with kids, and these are the ones that can be transient and at risky to lose. They are probably getting feedback from recruiters and consultants too. I personally know 2 people that flew to Cleveland and interviewed at Progressive and were put off by the campus and did not consider the job...and that is probably what they told the recruiter. I also know TONS of Consultants/Contractors that have done work in Cleveland/Akron....and a few that were offered full time employment and did not take it for the same reason. Walgreens, United Airlines, Motorola, Sears to name a few...all have established Loop offices in Chicago because they couldn't lure certain talent to suburban bunkers. It's a real concern for forward looking companies, and Eaton will probably regret abandoning Downtown completely at some point.

Excuse my ignorance on street building, but are those going to be real cement streets down there (as opposed to asphalt), or is that just a roadbed of some sort?

Cleveland: MOCA
In Cleveland, a Flashy New Museum But an Even Better Neighborhood Next Monday, the Cleveland's Museum of Contemporary Art will officially move into its new $27.3 million home on Euclid Avenue. Designed by Iranian-born and London-based architect Farshid Moussavi, the sophisticated, gem-shaped museum reminds visitors that Cleveland can still build the kinds of flashy cultural toys associated with bigger, wealthier cities. MOCA Cleveland may make the loudest design statement, but it's far from the only symbol of bold, 21st century urbanism in the University Circle neighborhood. The neighborhood has seen a diverse set of investments, including high density residential ....
