Ink, I can't believe you missed the library! Not a Carnegie, but a nice old mansion http://www.flickr.com/photos/63215679@N00/2522096793# Toys Time forgot is a great place to visit too http://www.toystimeforgot.com/ Northwestern Stark County, the school district is in Both Stark and Summit county. I'd say it's a bedroom community of Akron and North Canton with most residents commuting to those places for work.

I always liked the "I Like Cleveland" badge on the cabs...can't find a pic though

I dig the CITI PARK parking deck. Nice mid-century design...the orange brick tower detail, the patterned formed concrete...with shops on the ground floor. It's a little long though, but a thoughtful modern desgn IMO. Nice pics of city I have never seen.
  4. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-0423-united-usairways--20100422,0,4371339.story United-Continental merger would land in Chicago Merger talks moving rapidly; US Airways ends discussions with United Chicago would be headquarters to the largest airline in the world if United Airlines successfully consummates a deal with Continental Airlines. Where to base the world headquarters of the merged entity is one of many potentially thorny "social" issues that have been resolved as the two airlines move rapidly toward a deal that could be completed as soon as next week, said people close to the situation. Continental on Thursday cemented its status as the front-runner to be United's merger partner....

I have a Mexican friend that moved to Chicago with her parents when she was very young. When they enrolled her in Catholic school the Nuns changed her name from Maria to Mary and it stuck through college. She now goes by either one depending on what friends she is with.
  6. Wow, what a mixed bag...in a good way. If you showed me 10 of those pics and asked me what city it was I'd probably give you 10 different answers.
  7. ^^Seriously, your being really hyper-sensitive....I said I liked it! Sheesh!! And how did crime, muggings, rape and race get implied from my comment? What I said was meant to be complimentary and I am sorry if it did not come off that way. To clarify...The industrial area of Euclid between I90 and Euclid Ave...which includes the mall is what I meant, next time I will try to be more specific. Didn't say it wasn't used as a park. If you had to guess, would you say more people enter the park daily to use it recreationally or more use it as a thoroughfare. I'd say the latter from my experience, similar to MLK Drive. That's all that I meant. If I had to paraphrase my comment I would say "I like Euclid Creek Park, however in my opinion, it seems most people use it as a thouroughfare and don't appreciate what a cool park it is".
  8. LOL! I agree R&R, I find it curious as well.
  9. ^That is long overdue, I am glad to hear it. I wish they would go back to using the actual main entrance the way it was supposed to be and the architect intended, rather than the crappy side door currently used. The building is actually a good example of Brutalist IMO, entering the side door does not do it justice.
  10. These are great photos! I have a friend that is one of the managers at the Chicago theatre, and he LOVES old photos of the theatre...and loves Diana Ross. I am going to send him this link, and he may contact you. They have a wall of old photos that they show on tours.
  11. Great shots, that staircase in the modern wing is just amazing, I love it. I used to work in the Santa Fe building...it is a beautiful buidling. I miss working there

Where is the Downtown Dillard's...isn't this the HQ city? Interesting pics, thanks for sharing
  13. I say yes and no also. The ones in Cincinnati are so narrow that they don't seem that bad to me. However, Akron and Columbus have too many one ways that are not needed. I like Carnegie Ave in Cleveland that swiitches directions during rush hour and is 2 way during the day. Generally, the smaller the city, I think the less they are needed. The worst places I have seen are Austin TX and Springfield IL. Austin has great lively streets that seem weird as one way traffic sewers, like 6th street. Springfield IL is one of the most surprising ugly little cities I have ever seen that had all horrible one-ways and no life at all. I was expecting a state capitol like Madison WI, or even Lansing MI. It is neither, and a depressing capitol for one of the wealthiest states. I think because all the streets were one-way sewers that led straight out of town.

I always use Hotwire when I come to town, and the 3.5 hotel is usually the Hyatt....one time I got the Crowne Plaza. I highly recommend Hotwire
  15. ^I thought the exact same thing when I saw that article....seems like a big waste of prime streetfront space with all the other things going on around that area....and a missed opportunity for the university to generate revenue. Not to mention the safety aspect of having "eyes on the street" to make campus safer. I'd rather at least like to see some type of scholastic activity going on inside in the building than covered windows.
  16. ^There used to be one at Quaker Square upstairs above the restaurant that is detached from the main building....not sure if that would be the one you remember... Thanks for posting this...so incredible!
  17. I used to get 89X in Cleveland, esp after John Carroll went off the air around 11pm. 89X was the best! WAPS in Akron was also one of THE best alternative stations by far. Ran by the Akron Public Schools at the time, they had music that you would never hear anywhere else, all commercial free, and the DJ's were HS students (that were pretty bad actually). You could win passes to 9 of clubs or Aquillon sooooo easy....and 12" records. We had that exact same gadget! We used to turn it on and run outside to watch the antenna turn
  18. I remember that too before cable....there was Cleveland 3(NBC),5(ABC), and 8(CBS) and later 19(FOX) that you could easily get from the Akron Market and was the norm(8 an 19 later switched with some coup by FOX). Akron Channel 23 was ABC and I only remember my Dad watching it for the Akron news...there was no reason to watch it instead of channel 5...it was a stepchild not a major channel. Canton had a channel 61 or 67 I think, that was like channel 43(Lorain) and just played old re-runs(Yeah, Benny Hill!). The Cleveland TV channels were always the major players. Even my friend from Youngstown(Niles) said he grew up watching 3, 5 & 8 (which is weird because they were closer to Pittsburgh). At the time, the markets were different for retail, so I remember a lot of Cleveland area stores that weren't in Akron that I had never seen as a child being advertised like grocery stores and discount stores. May Dept Stores used to advertise all the time "Sale this Saturday at May Company and O'Neils" because they owned both stores in the 2 markets. The markets were different but so close. The strange thing is I think I watched PBS stuff on an Akron Channel, but I can't remember for the life of me what it was....WVIZ maybe....but that was even Cleveland!!
  19. Seriously, who photoshopped the old school facade into this pic?? Agree 100%...this is lame!
  20. I walked across this great bridge when I was in Cincy recently....the biggest let down was the KY side where the road splits and unfortunately we wanted to be on the other side of the street to check out the historic neighborhood to the east and head toward NOTL. You can't see the traffic speeding around those curves....and there does not seem to be any way to get across without just running across the 4 lanes of speeding traffic. Seemed kinda silly...like it was a little over-engineered for traffic and discouraged walking. I suppose we could have kept following the street west and circled back...but that seemed way out of the way and did not look like a decent option either.

Not a bad idea. I'd say it's probably more like "in state" and "out of state" tuition....you and your family have paid taxes in some form to the state most of your lives, so you get cheaper tuition at state schools...because you have paid into the system. Families in Ohio might be willing to let their tax money be used for this program IF it keeps their children from moving away....but not so willing to fund a blanket program that gives anyone money to move to Ohio. I mean, you have to have some kind of limits too...Ohio's budget is not busting at the seems with extra cash....the program needs to spend prudently. Might be easier to track and prosecute abuse of the program if the family is from Ohio too.
  22. Great tour man...love this kind of stuff, Thanks!
  23. A couple of friends of mine were in Cleveland last weekend for the first time, and they loved it! They couldn't believe how friendly everyone was.....beginning with the RTA train driver at the airport that came out and talked to them about how the passes work. Then there were the riders that came on the red line with bikes that also struck up a conversation with them...and they thought it was cool to see 3 people with bikes on the train at midnight. Then there was the RTA worker and the policemen at Tower City that directed them to the cab stand at the Ritz because the waterfront line was down...and engaged them in conversation about the best places to eat in the city. They walked from Downtown to Gordon Square, through Ohio City, the WS Mkt, GLB for lunch. Then there were the neighborhood embassadors in Gordon Square that directed them to Luxe for cocktails, and did not even bat a lash and were very helpful when asked about gay bars in the area. They loved the city!
  24. Everything and more you would ever want to know about the Terrace Plaza Hotel (mostly the art work)...12 page history from the SOM website historical section: http://www.som.com/content.cfm/art_soul_of_the_corporation A few excerpts including a mention of a Cincinnati company (Formica). Did you know... "rooftop terrace garden adjoining the lobby and an outdoor dining space that could be converted to a skating rink in winter" "The use of materials developed during World War II like Formica and other plastic laminates; the custom-designed textiles and the variegated color schemes in the individual hotel rooms correlated with different sun exposures; the built-in air conditioning and lighting fixtures; the motor-controlled couch-beds and the retractable metal wall partitions that could alter the size of suites; and the fully automated elevators and advanced mechanical systems regulated on a large central console all contributed to the sense that Terrace Plaza was the last word in modernity and planning, and that its owner had spared no expense on behalf of the public’s comfort and enjoyment."
  25. Very interesting, significant modern building for Cincy!
