Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
That is a great idea! I'll tell them to go down there for the sunset. Is 65th where the tunnel is that goes under the Shoreway to Edgwater? Has it been cleaned up a bit...from what I remember the tunnel was really neglected and full of mud. I really appreciate the feedback.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Question: I have friends that are going to be visiting Cleveland and wanted to do things centered around the rapid. I thought about adding Gordon Square to my list from the W 65th Rapid Station. Is this a far or dangerous walk from the Rapid Station? It doesn't look far on google maps (less than a mile), but the Gordon Square official website does not mention RTA options at all (pet peeve of mine but I sent them a message mentioning it). I know there is the Detroit Ave Bus, but they are more interested in taking the train around. They are both big guys and urban dwellers, so if it's decent and not horribly dangerous they will have no problem with it. With all that's going on over there it looks to be worth a visit...is that true? Thanks in advance for any insight.

The Great Home Renovation, Remodeling and Decorating Thread
Actually, very high end exotic woods, special finishes and rare species are going to most likely be veneer (birdseye maple, zebrano, anagre)....and much more expensive than a typical solid oak, maple or cherry. I think there is a misconception about veneer vs. hard wood...veneer with a substrate of mdf is much less likely to warp and a more stable product. The most high end custom millwork I have ever done for clients has mostly been veneer. Veneer also allows you to pick the grain pattern you want and how it is laid for a very high end custom look.

This is why Cincinnati sucks
I was in Cincy a few weeks ago, and the PPB was packed with people and an event going on. It really sucked, why aren't the cops up there harrassing people to move along...they act like it is a leisure activity or something, not just a way to get from point A to pint B. Cincinnati needs more bridges with sidewalks so this nightmare can be avoided. And don't even get me started about my room at the Westin overlooking Fountain square...which had a beer festival, late movies...etc! What is with you people, can't you just stay home and out of my way.

Grand Rapids, MI
^^ I think the main industry is furniture...esp commercial office system. Steelcase HQ, Herman Miller and Haworth nearby in suburbs. That industry is hurting pretty bad right now...but also can contribute to a "creative class". The big family there owns Amway...is that still even a viable company? Not sure what they do now. If you know anyone from GR they will tell you it's the bible belt of the north and they attribute western MI growth to the decline of Detroit and the East side of the state. Seems to have a wholesome, religious, non ethnic aura about it which may help the inner city...like a mini Salt Lake City and the opposite of Detroit. Personally GR seems bland to me because of those qualities.

What Airlines have you flown?
Very true indeed. Thai Airways was also one of the better ones I have ever flown. Even Vietnam Airways gave hot towels, slippers, poured wine freely and served a full meal when I flew them once in coach...and the flight was only a little over an hour from Bangkok to Hanoi. The traditional pink Viet style uniforms were probably the most elegant I have seen. The plane however, was shockingly old looking on the outside. Also was lucky enough to fly TWA into the JFK terminal by Aero Saarinen (one of my favorite buildings) in 2000 just before TWA was bought out. The terminal interior was wonderful and looked practically all original. I think that was the only now defunct big US carrier I have ever been on. The most memorable flight attendent was a huge old lady on NWA to Japan that looked exactly like Dame Edna....diamond encrusted glasses with a chain and big blue hair.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
I personally think if done right (not fortresses of solitude) and in a lively downtown setting, they could add to the attractiveness of an entertainment district. The ones in the middle of nowhere, or on the oukskirts of depressed cities just seem sad. I think adults should have entertainment options available to them in a dynamic city...and that includes strip clubs IMO. I also think Ohio could gain a lot of tourist traffic (and tax revenue) by just offering limited liquor licenses that extend last call on Saturday night to 4 am.

CINCI: Urban Ohio Impromptu Meet, TODAY

Pet Peeves!
^^Yeah, I could really care less about the label actually, and prefer clothes that do not have one on the outside regardless of the brand. It is the fit and quality I look for because I tend to buy things that I can keep longer. It just so happens that to find the fit in the US you usually have to go upscale with men's clothes. If I won the lottery, I would have all of my shirts and suits made by a tailor to my specs. My favorite things are a custom suit I had made in England and dress shirts I had custom made from a trip to SE Asia.

Pet Peeves!
Trust me, I love those stores, and the Sak's men's store is great...however, I was budget challenged after being jobless for a year and I miss being able to go into those places without feeling a pinch.

Pet Peeves!
Not sure what you don't get....I was talking about Mass Market Retailers, not higher end. US Mass Market retailers go deep and narrow in their offerings to maximize profit....and push styles and cuts that they invest in. Those other non-US stores seem to offer a wider variety of style/cuts and turnover of merchandise

Pet Peeves!
^^Oh yeah, the sizes are completely mislabled. I have a pair of jeans that are a 29 and loose. I haven't worn a 29 since HS. Everthing for men is labled a smaller size, and cut huge....I guess to appease larger Americans into thinking they wear a smaller size than they do. And talk about boring....the BR on Michigan avenue has a display in both windows that says "The White Shirt". YAWN! Really, and they wonder why sales suck.

Pet Peeves!
You have hit the nail on the head for my pet peeve of American Retailers(speaking from a men's pov). They try to fit everyone into the same box saying that this or that is "in" or "out" so the can mass market the same crap to everyone. Now, boot cut pants are back in and straight leg are out. I have a 30" inch waist and boot cut pants look like stove pipes and makes my size 10 feet look tiny, I hate it. Same goes for dress shirts, they are way too blousy in the US, and do not offer much for slimmer guys. You can usually only find well fitting clothes in the US if you go more upscale. I notice in other countries, mass retailers offer more selection for different body types instead of the same cut for everyone. US mass retailers....Gap, BR, Express....etc do not get it and are not doing well. International mass retailers...Zara, Next, Topman/Topshop, H&M seem to get it and are expanding. I only shop now when I am out of the country, I can't stand searching for clothes that fit in the US anymore since I was unemployed for a while and could not afford the higher end stuff. Maybe men in the US would dress better if more mass retailers offered a better selection. I don't blame men in the US for hating to wear suits, anything low/mid market fits like crap and looks like thier Dad's suits. Anyone on here that thinks people should dress however they want....think about when you travel to a new city. If you are downtown, say in Montreal or in the business district in London...don't you enjoy seeing smartly dressed people going about their business? Don't you get a better vibe from the place?

Not Fooling Anybody in Ohio (commercial conversions)
^ Was I dreaming or drunk....there was some kind of rainstorm show in there....right?

Not Fooling Anybody in Ohio (commercial conversions)
There must be lots of those "RAX" restaurants in Ohio like that....with the glass atrium thing on the front, those used to be all over... and I remember one when I was at Kent that was in Stow that would have a fake rainstorm every 10 min or so inside on that window atrium. Kind of along the same lines...when I lived in Kent, I briefly lived in one of those God-Awful pre-fab "Cardinal Communities". Those horrible apartment complexes were everywhere in Ohio and completely pre-fab and all looked the same. They would name them some stupid sounding nice name (Hickory Mill was mine) and plant flowers and try to landscape them really nice to hide the fact the buildings were sh!t. They were not fooling anybody, it was a the same building parts and looked exactly like a "Knights Inn" and probably built by the same company.

Not Fooling Anybody in Ohio (commercial conversions)
The Red Barn restaurant buildings were apparently built like tanks, and usually re-used but it's really hard to mask the shape of the old structure. Here is website with lots of pics of repurposed ones: http://www.barnbuster.net/

Ohio second in country with empty Wal-Mart buildings
This is crazy, I left Cleveland in 1996 and I don't remember there even being any Wal-Marts....or Targets for that matter (Although I think they were building a target near Southgate USA at the time). Now Ohio has the most empty stores! When did they even enter the Ohio market....less than 20 years ago? That is sad and a shame when a thriving company that has not even been around that long in the state has that many shuttered stores. The stores like that were Hills, Aames, KMart and Zayres maybe in the early 90's?? Living in Chicago there aren't any, and I wouldn't even know where to find one, therefore I have NEVER stepped foot in one and have no interest.

dfw: philip johnson's water gardens park in ft worth
Very cool, thanks for the pics. The only thing I have ever heard about this place is a little girl dying in there getting sucked under the water a few years back. I always wanted to see more pics of it. Definitely worth a visit.
