Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^ Actually, I disagree that every woman should get a seat over a man. The elderly and handicapped deserve a seat 100%, but why a young able bodied woman?? When you routinely watch young self obsessed girls sit there while an elderly woman or man is struggling to stand, you start to change your tune. And any woman that wants to be treated equal should not think they are entitled to a seat just because they have T**ts.

^^I'm no english major, but using "The Hotel Indigo" in the first sentence in 10 of 13 paragraphs is annoying!

You thought the CCV/smoke nannies were bad?
I'm sure it has to do with more content in the mag than the ads. Does it have "Savage Love", promote bars and happy hours, publish controversial articles....and bash the CCV occasionally? If it's anything like any other alternative weekly, I would guess that it has all these traits. It is totally their style to find an issue to exploit to tarnish the image. Suddenly clueless suburban mothers are telling their 16 year olds they can't read it and telling businesses that they don't like to see it displayed. They are trying to hurt their revenue. If they don't comply with this request, and whatever else this group deems inappropriate, they will go after the advertisers. I wish someone could dig up something on them to exploit and bring them down.

I wish someone would bring that CCV down. The public granstanding just goes to show that they are more interested in publicly decrying a magazine that they probably find offensive in many other ways, than they are in stopping prostitution. I'm sure given that it is an alternative weekly, they have probably bashed the CCV many times. Alternative weeklies are by design, an ALTERNATIVE paper to mainstream media, and therefore tend to publish stories and topics and YES advertising that mainstream media will shy away from. That's the beauty of them. Start to censor things that are perfectly legal (even though there is a thin line), where does the CCV stop?? They don't, they henpeck away at the next thing THEY deem offensive. You just solved your own problem... if it has content you don't want your kids to see, don't leave it on the coffee table. It's not a childrens publication.

Visiting Cleveland (for the first time) June 23-26, Need travel tips, Room, etc
Actually, I think my earlier post sounded like I was meaning more Buckeye, sorry for the confusion, but I meant farther down for the really rough stuff on Woodland. Hell, I used to walk to HS Williams and that Finast-y store at 112th/Fairhill (??) when I lived on the square and never had a problem on that stretch. It was more like in the 70'ish 80's blocks.. maybe...hell I don't remember exactly. Some of those areas down there are so isolated, they are in their own world of reality.

Judging by what was said as the items were being thrown, it 100% had to do with the fact that I was white. That it happened twice was weird, maybe it was just the same pack of kids doing it all the time. That was over 12 yrs ago though so, whatever. Ajknee, just be super careful in some of these areas, they don't mess around.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Haha, you hit the nail on the head. I take people to Shooters everytime I visit. There is nothing quite like that atmosphere that I have seen....the pleasure boats, freighters, bridges working, sun going down, river, lake....you can't beat it on a nice summer happy hour evening! The food/crowd/music...etc is totally forgetable.

That happened to me on Woodland twice, once with bottles and once with rocks...that is when I began testing the urban legend of not really having to stop. I never got ticketed by the cops, but used roll through a lot. Everyone I know did it.

You could take the Woodland/Buckeye 12 or 13 bus from Downtown to Shaker Square and take the rapid back. Lots of low rise walk up Public housing projects and such along the route and it's not very pretty....at least it used to not be. Some of it has been cleaned up, but it is probably more scenic neighborhood-wise than the rapid which runs in a trench below grade a lot. You will see most of the "urban renewal" areas from the 40's and 50's along Woodland. http://www.gcrta.org/pdf/12-13.pdf I always thought Buckeye Rd was interesting because it's literally around the corner from beautiful Shaker Square and the area gets rough quick. I used to walk over there to the post office when I lived on Kemper. When I would drive that way to Shaker Square from I 77 after 11:00pm, there was an unspoken rule that you didn't really stop at the red lights, just slow down....and the Cleveland cops would not stop you.

EIFS Horror Show!
Actually, window film like that is quite common....and an application like that in a school was probably added in case the window was smashed by vandals to minimize breakage material or if it was floor to ceiling, to keep people from walking through it. Look closely at most "frosted" glass, a lot of times it's a film sticker...I've seen it in stores, airports...etc. EIFS is horrible, I completely agree that it fools no one even from far away and looks terrible once it gets dinged up.

What field are you in?
Was in IT for many years, made a change finally and am now in Interior Design/Space Planning. I have done some work on the the tallest building in the world...now that's a resume builder!

North Randall: Randall Park Mall
^Yes 80's, and the glory days of malls in general...and the endless chains that kept springing up to fill the space. These days you have a few big players (Limited Brands, Gap Inc, Macy's...etc) with multiple branded stores controlling the market and picking and choosing what power centers they locate in... leaving the weak and less desirable with few options for tenents.

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
Have you ever hung out around the base of the Sears Tower? Sounds like Washington DC or Central London.....

Cleveland: Downtown: Sherwin-Williams Headquarters
I agree with the comments that a 21 story building is fine. I'd much rather see a more filled in denser shorter skyline like Cincinnati, Philadelphia....etc than the 3 building skyline currently. I think a few more 20 floor or so buildings would accomplish that. Also, I remember reading that Cleveland has an issue with having to dig really far down to hit the bedrock that is needed for the footings of a tower taller than a certain height, unlike Chicago and other midwest cities. Taking that into account, this does make economical sense....but I am not an expert on this subject...I just seem remember it being an issue. As for Gensler, why not let them have a crack at it. It's still a big name...the interior will be nice for sure since that is what they do best and their architecture and urban planning are getting noticed. Maybe they will use this a chance to shine. They outsource the engineering to the pros anyway....so in reality your getting a SOM engineered building with Genslers name on it.

North Randall: Randall Park Mall
There really were a lot of those kinds of stores then...DeJaiz, Attivo, Cignal, Silverman's, Oak Tree, Bottom Half....and I faintly remember a jeans store with a frog as the logo called "Rivet". Those were just the men's stores...women had a ton! Maybe that's why so many malls are dying, there just aren't that many different companies left to fill a mall, and the ones that are left narrow down their focus to super high volume stores only.

North Randall: Randall Park Mall
I worked at RPM for many years while in college in the early to mid 90's, first at The Athlete's Foot and later at Dillard's. This was the period that it really started it's decline. The first blow I think was Horne's closing and Burlington Coat factory moving in. From that point it just went downhill. Stores like Gap closed, and it soon seemed like all that was left were athletic stores, fast food, jewelry and record stores. Middle and upper class black families started shopping elsewhere because the merchandise became very stereotypical urban, catering to only teenagers. Dubious bottom feeder "local" stores started filling in the vacancies with crappy fake merchandise, no customer service and non-existant return policies. Dillard's was the return center for Beachwood and Downtown. Buy something you can't afford to show off in front of your friends or the salesperson at Beachwood....then slink into RPM and return it later. I honestly don't think crime was any worse than any other mall that I had worked at. The thing I actually liked about working at RPM is that black folks actually come in...know what they want.... and buy it. The item was usually expensive too. The other stores in the district would get pissed at us because a lot of times they were forced to send us the new hot merchandise because we would sell out of it in a matter of hours while we sent the crappy sale junk to them....no black folks are going the club or school in last season's merchandise. The folks I worked with there were great and became good friends of mine. I also remember a big obvious tranny that used to shop there all the time, and nobody even cared or gave her/him trouble. I used to dread working at Parmatown where white folks tried on 20 different pairs of crappy sale shoes only to have you "hold" it for them. RPM was too big anyway, and these type of malls are going the way of the Dodo. I can't believe it held out this long, It's about time it was put out of it's misery.

^ Definitely try Hotwire....I always use it when staying in Cleveland, and usually get the Hyatt at the arcade...a 3.5 star for about $80. It's a great bargain.

Attempting to design a loft (in 3d)
Do you have a budget to work from? If not, these floors are really cool. Alumafloor....aluminum tiles that are engineered to fit together without grout joints. Pretty expensive, but really cool, and surprisingly quiet. Rem Koolhaas (sp) used them at the student center at IIT for the remodel. http://www.aluminumfloors.com/ Also, another good idea if you want to break up the space, but want to have it open sometimes too...an electronic privacy glass wall is clear and then goes opaque when turned on...we are using this for a big open penthouse space in one of our projects at work. http://www.switchlite.com/home.html These tiles are cool too: http://www.sensitile.com/index_splash.html

booming downtown austin
Austin has had it's setbacks too...the shell of the Intel office building downtown sat unfinished and abandoned for years before they recently tore it down...if that had happened in ANY ohio city, the negativity surrounding it would be HUGE! Imagine Eaton starting the new building and abandoning it in Downtown Cleveland. I used to travel to Austin a lot for work. The downtown is OK....and I never could understand why 6th st was one way with tarffic speeding down it, when the streetscape was so lively. I always got the vibe from Austin that it was a charming little city, but well on it's way to becoming the next Atlanta sprawl mess. They are building these huge hulking freeways all over the place with the highest flyover ramps I have ever seen. I stayed Downtown, but worked outside the cbd, and there were huge "for lease" signs on every office building I passed.
