Cleveland Metroparks: The Emerald Necklace
I always thought the Euclid creek reservation was cool....so close to all that Euclid Square Mall mess. What an oasis among not so pretty surroundings. Unfortunately I think the parkway is mostly used as a thouroughfare to get from I90 into Richmond Heights.

Cleveland taxi cab stuff
An interesting cab story from a driver in Cleveland...he was telling us how the real bread and butter was to get the people that have been partying all night and need a ride far away...to Akron, Toledo, Youngstown and even Detroit! He said that it's not that uncommon once a month to get someone that wants to go to a casino in Detroit at 2:00 am. He showed me the whole chart of flat fares they have to those places. I think Detroit was $800.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
A lot of the The Chicago "el" station bridges have signs on them that refer to it as rapid transit. I know for sure the Addison station near Wrigley still has a sign on the bridge that says "Rapid transit to the loop". It used to say 19 minutes, but they blocked that out long ago. A-freakin-men. Buses breakdown daily. I was in a cab the other day and the African cab driver was complaining about how bad traffic was in Chicago, and blamed it on how bad the cta sucks....and people are choosing to drive more. He pointed at one of the old buses and said "Back in my country, we have the same bus...and it's a 3rd world country!" Some of the buses literally have pieces falling off as they go down the road belching black smoke. We are once again in a doomsday scenerio, bus lines will be cut and possibly rail lines if they don't get state funding. Pretty sad for the 2nd largest transit system in the US.

Cleveland: Retail News
Last holiday season at Tower City, my brother and I were waiting outside a card shop for my mother to finish shopping, and within 2 minutes a security gaurd approached us and told us to move along. Made me feel like spending more time and money there. Hmmm....need I even say anything.

Montreal
Love Montreal! Club Super Sexe right across from the main entrance of Eaton Center....the giant downtown mall tourist area. And somehow crime is low and the children are fine.

Akron-Canton: Restaurant News & Info
The ribbon cutting was cool. Chrissie rode in on the back of a motorcycle with a group of others on motorcycles. Then she got off, took off her jacket and had on a waitress looking top with "Chrissie" stitched on it. She then proceeded to grab a tray of Hors Douvres from the new restaurant and walked around the crowd passing them out. The head of PETA was in from VA, and spoke about being vegetarian. The mayor of Akron also spoke. Then she sang a few songs and sounded great. The concert was also good. The only downside was a Christian rapper that was a little too religious and homophobic. I guess Chrissie wanted some diversity and added him at the last minute. A lot of people got up and walked out during the performance. I saw the head of PETA later at the interbelt, and told him about the rapper...he said Chrissie did not know and would not have approved of his views. He was going to let her know. She was amazing and just a downright cool person....what a great asset for Akron. While singing "My city was gone" she would occasionally insert commentary.... like she sang "The farms of Ohio, have been replaced by shopping malls" then stopped the song and said "Remember when the only thing in Montrose was the drive in theatre". She also sang an old jingle from O'Neils dept store. I also thought it was cool that she made Jerry Lee Lewis the headliner instead of herself.

Akron-Canton: Restaurant News & Info
^I've never seen it, I'll have to look for it....sounds interesting. I kinda remember a place Downtown called the Bank or the Vault maybe?? It was an old bank that I think was a punk club. Don't remember the Crypt though, must have been before my time. I see on Wikipedia that Devo played at the Crypt in 1976. I was way too young then.

Cleveland: Retail News
^That info must be really old. The last O'neil's store ever to be built would have been (I believe) Rolling Acres around 1976 or so. There weren't any in Cleveland, the closest would have been Summit. The commercials on TV used to say " At May Company and O'neil's". They were basically the same store, but I think May's carried higher end stuff.

The end of an era for Akron: Goodbye Quaker Square
Ink, was the hotel still looking pretty good, or have they started to let it go? I ask because I am going to see Chrissie Hynde in concert on Sept 15th and was thinking of staying there...but they are still charging a premium room rate (for Akron) of $130 or so. Too bad this leaves Akron with ONE downtown Hotel!! That's crazy, and the Radisson wants about $120. There must be a market for hotels Downtown if they are able to charge those kind of rates in Akron....esp when the Montrose mess and other suburban hotels are considerably under $100. Maybe someone will build a new hotel Downtown. Nice pics too btw....I too went there as a kid and was amazed. I take it the train layout is gone as well?

UncleRando's Trip from Cincinnati --> Atlanta
I see that same display at the travel plazas on the Indiana Toll Road 80/90 when I drive back to Ohio. I never understood why that had that stuff so far north.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
One idea I think is brilliant is the MTA in NYC has a policy that you can flag a bus down anywhere along it's route between the hours of 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM, and the bus driver will stop as long as they deem it safe. Now that is serving people and thinking outside the box.

Cleveland: Retail News
This was going to be exactly my advice. Young enough but business looking also, and fitted instead of baggy. Filene's and Nordstrom Rack have good suits for the budget minded. Also, try paulfredrick.com for shirts...I like them because they sell slim cut dress shirts. My other word of advice...No pleated pants! Oh yeah, and go up to Canada if you can. I always find better fitting clothes cheaper there (since everything in the US seems oversized). Zara, Sisley, La Maison Simon and Tristan & America are my favorites in Montreal. Toronto is not far from Cleveland though.

Cincinnati: Historic Photos
What was so bad about the 80's?? I counted 8 new DT office buildings built in Cincy during the 80's from SSP including P&G world HQ, plus a few more built 90-91 that were in the planning stages. Most of the skyline as it is today was built then. And weren't there like 5 department stores open, plus that Tower Place mall in it's heyday? Seems like it would have been an exciting place, with more going on than today?? Now if it is the architecture of the period, I agree that a some of it was less than inspiring.

Berea is old (Cleveland)
Berea is so scary! Hehe....remember that radio commercial with the Valley Girl voice for the haunted house? That popped into my head from nowhere when I read the thread title. Anyway, looks like a cool town, I had no idea. Thanks for the pics.

That's very cool looking...reminds me of the South Shore Metra line that runs down the middle of the street in Michigan City Indiana.

Downtown Columbus: EASTON!!!
^^ Those Ruehl No 925 stores must all try to look like that...a strip of rowhouses in Greenwich Village. It's A&F's top of the line brand, a much more overpriced Abercrombie. Bought a pair of sweat pants there once and still can't get the smell of the damn cologne out of them. It's just plain weird.

Akron: Art Museum
Dwell Magazine has a picture and short feature in this months July/Aug issue on the new Akron Art museum. Can't find it on the website though. Mentions that it's the firms(Coop Himmelb(l)au) first public building in the US, and they are well known in Europe for their "brazenly forward-looking architecture"....and "They may well earn the same reputaion in the American Heartland...." AND get this....no rust belt or back door blue collar jabs at all! Looks like Akron is getting some good national press. The interesting thing about the article is that it mentions the "Akron Art Museum" twice and gives the website but never specifies "Ohio" or Akron, Ohio. I would imagine that Akron is not well known enough to just stand on it's own, but maybe I'm wrong.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
After my recent visit to Cleveland, I only wish we had the nice buses you have. I have been on 3 old crappy cta buses this week that have broken down. One was on my way to work.... on Lakeshore drive at the time, and 70 people had to get off and wait for another one while 60 mph traffic zoomed by. Then that night on my way home, the bus just died and we had to get off and find another way home. That's twice in one day. I have been on other buses that have had to stop on the drive and pick people up that were stranded. RTA really has their shit together when it comes to replacing buses.
