In the city of Chicago and most inner suburbs, there are strict laws on spray paint and you can't buy it at most stores, and if they do have it, it is locked up and you have to be over a certain age or something. Not sure what the rule is to buy it, I haven't needed spray paint in a long time.
  2. They also have C.O. Bigelow, Henri Bendel and Intimissimi (though very small divisions), and are now opening "Pink" stores on their own outside of VS. I think the "Pink" stuff is doing better than VS...hence the expansion. I guess the gals love sweatpants with stuff written on the ass.

If you are traveling outside of Downtown, here's a tip on cabs....if you grab one from Downtown and like the driver, give him a decent tip...they almost always give you their card and offer to come get you later. It's good to have it as a backup in case there aren't any around. I haven't had a problem though and I always take cabs.
  4. Trust me, I love closet space too, about 100 sq ft of my 675 sq ft condo is closet space. I guess the point of my rant is because I get tired of Americans saying how much damn space they "need" as opposed to it being a "want". That family will have over 1,000 sq feet per person in that new house....and they make it sound like they are doing it all for their kids. Now, just for fun, let's say Valerie and Evan Astle are in a plane crash tomorrow, how did they really prepare the kids for the future...hopefully they haven't saddled them with a giant mound of debt with the big mortgage, 3 car payments and credit cards. Maybe they are independently wealthy(since she is a grade school teacher)....but the odds are in the US right now that they are living close or beyond their means. Some of these people need to step back and think about what is more important.....not to mention, they may want to think about their carbon footprint. I agree with Mayday....baking brownies is a private affair.
  5. Or maybe you have a bunch of crap that you probably don't use. Get that bigger house Valerie, then rush off to Wal-Mart and fill your SUV with more junk to put in your bigger house. Or the alternative, stay in the smaller house and put some limits on your kids. Teach them the value of money, and how to spend it wisely on quality not quantity. Teach them how to give back to the community by donating items they no longer really need or use. And unless you already have all 3 kids college tuition banked, put the money that you will spend on that big house and utilities toward something that will really help your kids....a solid future. I bet they are fat.
  6. ^^Well said. I remember "desirable" stores, and lots of them packed in that block. Seemed that crime was no worse than any other place that has a lot of drunks stumbling around in the wee hours. No comment
  7. Love it....and good for the Mayor for addressing the issue frankly and with a creative solution. A crematory is the only dissenting opinion the PD could find. Little bit of a stretch.
  8. I thought this section of High St was one of the best urban landscapes in Ohio before they tore it down for this. Mean Mr Mustard's, Purity, BW3....etc all stacked on top of each other with a 4 foot sidewalk that could barely hold all the people. This is too watered down.
  9. Great thread, nice examples of modernist style. I usually think of Columbus having the most of this type of architecture, but Dayton looks like it has some great examples. I can't think of anywhere around Cleveland that might have any....maybe Parma, Fairview Park or Rocky River? Other than that, Shaker Hts has some modern style mansions closer to the Beachwood border. The Fairlawn suburb of Akron has some too I believe. It would be nice to see the mid century modern craze really catch on in Ohio and see neighborhoods of these homes being renovated and commanding high prices.

  11. I think it already passed and is now being scrutinized. Ohio Senate OKs strip club restrictions Bill would limit hours, puts distance minimum between nude or semi-nude performers and customers. http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2007/04/17/ddn041807sexclubs.html
  12. I just don't understand why Ohio legislators are letting the extreme right dictate state policy :?

  15. Poop = Rat Food. I'd rather have the sign. Good for them, I hate people that don't pick up the poop. Don't get an f'ing dog if you can't pick up the poop. The best is when a snow pile melts into a sh*t pile...love that.
  16. ^ There is a Home Depot like that near me in Chicago(Lincoln Park)....entrance right off the sidewalk, 2 floors and a parking deck on top. They kinda miss the mark on the details ....they only have those little flimsy plastic bags, which a) everything they sell certainly does not fit in them and b) some of the things you buy poke right through them. Kinda sucks when you are walking or taking PT. Just goes to show that they don't know urban markets that well. Still better than a big box in a parking lot though. See a pic of the urban store here: http://westnorth.com/boxes/homedepot-tb.html
  17. Each month, I turn to the last page of Metropolis first! Good stuff.
  18. Maybe The Gateway District in Downtown Salt Lake City is more what you are looking for as a comparision: http://www.shopthegateway.com/

^ Yeah Halles was nice (though all, I remember barely was the ones at Belden Village and Summit Mall). Interestingly enough, Halle's was owned by Marshall Field's from 1970 - 1981, when many said it started to go downhill. I guess that is just the way things go with US corporations aquiring everything they can and answering to shareholders more than the customer.

Oscar De la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Liz Claiborne....Yawn. This is exactly why these dept stores have become boring and stogey. While these are great traditional brands, they aren't very exciting to anyone under 40. It seems like the safe way for the dept store to go is to stick with tired brand mainstays like Tommy, Nautica, Polo...etc. Fields on State would often feature hot new(or re-realeased) brands with a big splashy new section....FCUK, Penguin, Emanuel Ungaro, Lacoste, Le Tigre, Ben Sherman, Thomas Pink, Buffalo, Von Dutch, True Religion and Seven were some of the ones I have seen down there in the past five years or so featured. Not all of of those are "High End" per se, just new and hot at the time. What is the incentive to go into Macy's and check it out if it's always the same stuff....unless you need socks or underwear. I guess Federated leaves that realm for Bloomingdales only. And to me Bloomingdales does a poor job of creating any excitment. Higbee's, Lazarus and May Co used to be that way many years ago too. Now stores like Dillard's and Macy's are just a big giant bore.

I hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised if they downsized the floor space and closed some of the amentities like the restaurants and food courts and market. The Herald Square one seems to have more chain restaurants inside like Au Bon Pain and such rather than unique food stands. State St is more for Downtown loop workers, and with Carson Pirie Scott now closed, they are the only Dept store on State for Dept Store merchandise....cosmetics and stuff like that...Sears doesn't compete in that league. Water Tower is more for tourists and people that live on N Michigan. As a side note, Lord and Taylor is closing at Water Tower and American Girl Doll, or whatever it is called, is moving there. Anyone need a creepy overpriced Doll and want to wait in line for it?
  22. ^ I thought I smelled fish. EDNA, EDNA! :whip: I admit, I love it too.
  23. ^ Maybe that is where they taped this Wendy O'Williams classic?
  24. Found this old article and thought it was somewhat relevant to this thread. On a side note, I watched "The OH in Ohio" and during the scene when she is taping in Jacobs Field, the AT tower is the main building in the background. I was thinking that if it wasn't for that building, there wouldn't have been much there. http://www.metropolismag.com/cda/story.php?artid=756 Disposable Architecture Ignoring its Modernist lineage, Ikea seeks to dismantle a classic Marcel Breuer building. 25. I think you answered your own question from the Federated Dept Stores thread.....
