  3. ^ It was still pretty strong wasn't it. May Co was still open too and most storefronts on Euclid were full of national retailers like Woolworth, Bakers, Thom McAn, Radio Shack....etc. Though most of the storefronts looked pretty run down by then. Thanks for that interesting article, the future seemed bright then. And as I recall, Standard Oil purposely shunned tax abatements and help from the city, and built the building on their own. They were one of the city's best corp citizens back then.

I'll never see Monroe the same way again

I do wonder if a chunk of the nightlife/entertainment economy is going to be sucked into other states in border towns like Cincy, Toledo, Youngstown because of people going to party/bowl/bingo/...etc where they can smoke? Could it lead to higher drunk driving instances because of increased driving distance too? It didn't hurt NYC, but NYC is an island on it's own with a captive audience. I don't think Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and Akron would be that affected by it either.

Federated loses $3 million as it digests Field's, others By Sandra Jones, Tribune staff reporter. 7. I agree that Columbus is a great city for a quick weekend getaway. Everytime I go I have fun, despite the fact that there always seems to be a cheerleading convention going on. It's hard for the short north to feel like SoHo with all that pep and spirit.
  8. I always get cab drivers bitching when I go to NYC and am only going to Brooklyn. I always tell them where I am going before I get in the cab, and if I detect some attitude, I politely ask them if they'd like me to go back to the airport/city worker that directed me to his cab and ask for another cab, since it seems like he doesn't want to go there. They quickly shut up and change their tune since they are essentially forbidden from refusing to take you where you want to go. Aren't there city workers directing the cab queue at CLE? If so, part of their job is to ensure the cabs in queue are operating legally and ethically, and are licensed. Report it to the city worker right then and there and demand another cab the minute you a get negative attitude about a destination.
  9. I would imagine that Hopkins has a lot of business travelers on expense accounts that don't care about the cost of the cab and just want door to door service to their hotel. All of my friends that are or were in consulting with the big firms have all worked in Cleveland on projects. It seems with most people I know, they have only been there on business, and never leisure if they have been.

  11. Better yet, the city may allow you to pay your rent to them in escrow. You put the money in an account with the city while you dispute the landlord, that way you can't be evicted while your dispute is investigated.
  12. I am very excited that I happened on Great Lakes Burning River at my little neighborhood bodega tonight. They don't have a very big selection of distinctive regional beer at all, so I was shocked to see it. GLBC varieties are pretty easy to find here in Chicago at the larger stores and some bars on tap that specialize in good beer...but it really must be becoming a pretty big name if I can find it at this dumpy store by my house. Of course I'll have to get to a liquor superstore to get the seasonal one and try it...which I need to do after reading this thread!
  13. Just don't buy the canned fish from Mexico
  14. I know sometimes those premium denim stores are expensive, but I suggest that people splurge on one pair because they are worth it. I would say skip the blasted out young trendy ones and get a simple pair of raw denim dark wash skinny jeans. I bought cheap jeans for a long time, but under pressure from a friend I splurged on a $150 pair from A.P.C in SoHo NYC. They are my favorite jeans, the fit is incredible, and I can't believe the compliments I get all the time...on freaking jeans. One tip though, you should only wash them ocassionally, which can be hard if you wear them to smokey bars. I am now sold on spending a little more for something I truely like to wear.
  15. - I think it is cool that there is going to be a place to buy premium denim downtown since choices are limited to lame Gap and their skinny black pants. You guys should stop poo-pooing it before it even opens....Jeez...btw, that kind of attitude is part of what makes the midwest "conservative". Speaking of the Gap, this is hilarious... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VbClaPdPmA - The newstand/porn shop wasn't so bad, it was actually one of the few places that you could buy newspapers from other cities. When I was at RTA I ducked in there to buy a Washington Post, and my boss saw me coming out with a bag. - Nine of Clubs was a great place!
  16. ^True, it's easy to spot a Michigander because they are usually wearing a hat/sweatshirt/t-shirt etc that says 'Michigan'. They are a proud bunch. Seriously, if 99% of the time I wished I lived somewhere else, I would move there no matter what. Why don't you go back? Life is too short to wish you lived somewhere else 99% of the time.
  17. Aren't they allowed to say 'Stouffers'?
  18. I LO VE Philly...nice pics!
  19. ^ True, the dress shirts are baggy as hell for some reason. Strange since it is Euro. The colors and detail are great though. I used to have a really hard time finding skinny clothes too, but things are getting better at most stores. Zara is the best. Anyway, sorry to get off topic. I am not having any luck finding the program on WTTW or WYIN....PBS websites kinda suck to find anything quick.
  20. Oh yeah, and I want to catch this, it looks interesting...I hope I can find it on my local PBS affiliate. btw...Kuhlman is a cool store...is there one at TC?
  21. There was a men's store in the Old Arcade (Hyatt) that had some cool stuff. Not sure if it is still there
  22. I was told by a cab driver in Clevland that they were not allowed to stop (when being flagged) downtown except at an area designated for it and you can get a ticket for doing so. Also, most cabbies gave me thier card, and told me to call them when I was ready to go back to the hotel. I generally find them nice, and I have had some lady cab drivers there which is rare. The one thing I find strange are all the full size van/taxis. What is with that? It seems like everytime I take a cab there it is a giant van that is really junky. Also, how do you even know they are empty, it seems like the light stays on no matter what.
  23. Yeah, when I ride PT my main goal is not not to get from point A to point B....it's to go to Disneyland! Fuck getting to work on time.
  24. Things also become parking lots and freeway trenches...that was "change" for the last 5 centuries . If we were talking about New York City, then yes, less than stellar buildings need to come down to make way for new things(and actually the same fight for a notable modernist architect's building like this would probably happen there too) because there is no room and something's got to go. We are talking about a challenged business district pockmarked by parking lots and many more less notable buildings than this one. To be cavalier about tearing down a 29 story tower by a revered modernist architect just isn't right. I am glad that there is some concern, and backlash. This is not a decision to be taken lightly.
