  1. Subway redux. So, if the streetcar is cancelled these tracks will remain in place, correct? Like those subway tunnels?

...and there was that chicano rapper Kid Frost (at least I think he was chicano). Ice, Frost, all pretty chill, eh? @@@ Been thinking about Chicago a lot due to that gay marriage thing (and a new boyfriend who used to live in Chicago).... ....here's a link to hipsterism (sp?) in Chicago: What are Chicagos most Hipsteriffic Neighborhoods ...and this excellent Hipster Historical Geography of Chicago (picking up on the historical gensis of hipstersim, esp the artiste<--->hangers-on phenom, in various local bohemias): The Migration of the Hipster
  3. Is this tourism or is it people staying at hotels on an cross country drive on the interstate?
  4. #11 is a classic Chicago vernacular architecture building for the part of the city I grew up in....
  5. Yes, very nice indeed. btw, Nelson Algren called Chicago an "October City".....
  6. One of the good things about the link is that the author gives her methodology...which is admittedly a bit seat-of-the-pants. But fun to see Dayton show up on a positive list for once.
  7. Things are cooking here! Dayton named No. 4 most creative mid-sized city in U.S. The top 10 list (& i note 3 of these...Pasadena, Torrance, and Tempe, are suburbs and another 3...Eugene, Knoxville, & Ft Collins) are quasi-college towns: 1. Salt Lake City, UT 2. Pasadena, CA 3. Richmond, VA 4. Dayton, OH 5. Torrance, CA 6. Fort Collins, CO 7. Columbia, SC 8. Eugene, OR 9. Knoxville, TN 10. Tempe, AZ ...I think Richmond VA really does fly under radar from what I know of it (it's about the size of Louisville, I think, but doesnt get the same buzz). Columbia SC is , also, a "who knew"? pick for an arts town.
  8. So, any intel on the press conference?

How about making a scarf part of your outfit ...like that filmmaker character in Rent?

I am sort of disappointed in this due to AJ seemingly getting it about the decline out beyond the historic districts (and even whithin them, if you look at Hufffman). And Whaely talking about the partial demoltion of the Arcade...well!....>does best Jack Benny imitation<
  11. I think this is a bit of hyperbole. THere's a lot of progress in Cincy that has been happening without that streetcar. Sure the streetcar would have upped the game a lot, but things were moving forward in Cincy anyway.
  12. ...was Cranley running as a D but was really an R?

Pretty much a status quo election for Dayton....

Not necessarily per se, but more as popularizers of the hip hop musical style.
  15. (also posted in the mass transit subforum) Atlantic Cities features the streetcar-politics connection in Cincy: The Streetcar at the Heart of the Cincinnati Mayoral Race Of the many vital civic matters that might decide a local election, you wouldn't expect a streetcar to be at the top of the list. But that's exactly what's happening in Cincinnati, Ohio. Whether or not city residents vote for John Cranley and Roxanne Qualls — both very qualified candidates from the same party — may well come down to how they feel about the city's streetcar plan....

William Upski Wimsatt was a good example of this. I think Bomb the Suburbs came out in the early 1990s, so a bit later than the first appearance of the phenom as an 80s thing. I think for the 1980s Beastie Boys and similar acts where picking up on this trend. I find that whole "whigger" thing actually a bit more annoying than hipsterism.

Yeah...there is that hipster/yuppie/"urban pioneer" vote that Nan seems to be playing for, too. AJ seems to be running a "neighborhoods" campaign. Interestingly, Esrati was actually "winnowed in" during the primaries (instead of finishing behind the pack), so is actually running in the general election this time.

I figure she has an in with the public employee unions, and thats a motivated voting bloc. off-elections have low voter turnout, so candidates like Nan, with that kind of support, have the edge. In any case it would be interesting to see a precinct level map or vote summary to see if there are any patterns developing in political geography...

A move is afoot to make a southern connection btw the Great & Little Miami River bikeways.... First leg opens today...Medlar Bikeway Opens Today Since this is in that Austin Blvd area, the developer RG Properties features it in its marketing website (with more info/backgrounder stuff): work begins on Medlar Bikeway ....also at the link a graphic showing the route.

I thought there was a thread on this already. The title 'mayor' somewhat misleading since the Mayor is just one of the city commision. This is not a "strong mayor" form of government one finds in other cities. Dayton prepares to lick New Mayor ...the incumbent Gary Lietzell lost a three-way primary, and now the top two vote getters City Commissioner Nan Whaley vs County Auditor AJ Wagner face off for the title round. Former mayors Rhine McLin and MIke Turner (now congressman) have endorsed AJ Wagner. Interestingly McLin is a Democrat and Turner a Republican.
  22. How is Seelbach doing in this race?
  23. Has this happened elsewhere....a tranist project that was killed due to an election (this being a local streetcar or light rail plan).
  24. ...in otherwords, a growing urban prairie.

From Germany...the Bundeswehr has an internal study underway on the possible consequences of Peak Oil: Military Study Warns of a Potentially Drastic Oil Crisis ...nothing really new here, except that the concept is being considered seriously by the Germans. My guess is the DoD has similar studies, but they are not being reported on (or leaked).
