Some of the older folks here might be familiar with Stewart Brand, who was behind the Whole Earth Catalogue, Coevolution Quarterly, the WELL, etc. Sort of misunderstood as one of those crunchy granola back-to-the-land eco/green types, Brand is actually more interesting than all that, being a somewhat libertarian (I like to call it being self-reliant) technology buff. Whole Earth Catalogue was, after all, subtitled "access to tools". Here is weights in on behalf of nuclear power as a way of addressing shortage of fossil fuels/global warming Stewart Brand: Nuclear Power Could Save The World ...which is from his book Whole Earth Discipline.
  2. D'yall think that if Cranley wins and actually does cancel the streetcar, that this will garner some national media attention, or maybe just within urban affairs/urban policy circles?
  3. This article was linked and prominently featured at the planning/urban affairs website "Planetizen": Cleveland Caught betwee Dream of Revival and Reality of its Woes ...which sounds a lot like Cincinnatti and Dayton and even Chicago to some extent....
  4. It would be the Cincy Subway all over again...tho the subway was more of an heartbreaker since so much had been built before the cancellation.
  5. ^maybe they dont need to? Dayton is pretty desperate....
  6. I rode my bike to Springfield (actually to Buck Creek). Yay! Finally did that! And Springfield is different by bike. They have a nice new coffeshop in that big old market building...fairly busy too for midday.... https://www.facebook.com/unmundocafe ,...& this new business is fascinating....sort of a "Springfield Shop" downtown....cool stuff just from looking through the window (it was closed)..... https://www.facebook.com/ChampionCityGuideSupply ...so if you are in Springfield check them out!

Dayton CM riders will participate in a new Dayton thing...(2nd or 3rd one)...a Day of the Dead Parade: Ride of the Dead There is this concept of using group rides to promote places....the summers Tour De Dayton is probably a good example. Now suburban Kettering is doing something similar: Tour de Arts in Kettering...a 10 mile ride looking at creative things in Kettering...
  8. Here's the DDN article: http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/news/local/beavercreek-oks-fairfield-mall-bus-stops/nbNnd/
  9. Good....finally. Much pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth over this, no-doubt.
  10. You want to used the adjusted for inflation numbers for an accurate picture. The per capita gdp is also a better apples-to-apples comparison
  11. ^ ...or a beer at their new co-op brewpub.

Hilly! The city is built on hills, once you get out of that downtown area. Sort of like Dayton except the hills are steeper....
  13. ....esp one that was already used for housing. yay.
  14. Fairly detailed site plan and some promotional graphics are up for Cornerstone , the big new development going up @ Wilmington & Feedwire/Whipp, near the I-675/Wilmington Interchange Oberer Development Cornerstone Page ...looks like this will be power center, with a sort of shopping village attached, plus the usual outlot pads....
  15. Nice profile on the developer behind Austin Landing.... Randy Gunlock sees Austin Landing as meeting regional employment need As Gunlock, 58, sees the project, he is building not just another mixed-use development or “village.” He is building a magnet for employees living in Cincinnati or points south who might not otherwise consider working or living in the Dayton area. Bruce Langos, chief operating officer of Teradata, agreed. Austin Landing “is an attractive location for recruitment for companies in the area. Having the ability to acquire talent from the Cincinnati and Dayton corridor is attractive for both experienced people as well as college graduates from many of the region’s great colleges,” he said. ..and, behind the paywall: New Austin Landing plan coming....about how RG plans on finishing off the complex. He is developing on both the north and south side of Austin Blvd, and has a entertainment district zoning, permitting a cluster of liquor liscences...for more eating/drinking establishments. In the inverview, RG has this to say about the south side:
  16. What about closer parking?

Taking a walk last night with a Uriah Heep greatest hits album on. Man they suck. I can see how this stuff would have appealed to my long haired wannabe stoner junior high kid self...."wow, cool man, they're singing about wizards...." but ok Sweet Lorraine was ok. Otherwise, old cd of Jasper the Collossal. Paige Beller.....who is from Cincy (west side somewhere) but working out of Dayton....was the force behind this great postpunk project...

...truer than you think! (try Banalore, not Baghdad). @@@@@@ So this is the long-awaited building to fill that hole. Hmp. At least it has a a good sidwalk elevation....
  19. Here's a question. If I go this year, where do I park? Funny question because the last times Ive been i was in a hotel, so parking wasnt an issue. This time I want to drive in from Dayton and take a freind along, but said freind does not like to walk a lot (otherwise I would park near Findlay Market and walk in). Also, can I take the bus. Im thinking of parking in Northside and taking the Hamilton Avenue bus into downtown for Oktoberfest.
  20. Yeah, trying to figure out this connection? BTW, thread is from 2008. Ive been back to Oktoberfest with my parents. My ma loved it (she's German and is a big fan of festivals of any sort)....we stayed in I think Garfield Place that year.
  21. Vegas looks so built-up now. You really caught some good pix, caught the feel of the place (from what I recall)....esp Long Beach (some of those buildings look a bit Miami Beach) AND downtown LA...where you can see how the place has a no-kidding real downtown from way-back..."canyon streets" lined with old high rises, like Cincy and Chicago. Hollywood being the older neighborhood...good catch on the pix too ("Gaylord" building...classic...)
  22. Yet Bridgeport is like Springfield-by-the-Sea...dying old factory town, but with a port (from what I saw from the Metro North train). This must be a nice part of town.

The Rundgern connection is interesting. Wow! He was also freinds with or aquainted with Patti Smith, who knew him around the time, or just before the time, 'Runt' came out. She mentions him in that "Just Kids" memoir (turns out Patti Smith is older than I thought, more part of the 1960s era, when I saw her as more of a 1970s figure. I guess she became famous in the 1970s...
  24. Does it look 1890? The place looks a lot different in scale and material and form than the ones around it?
  25. A place I usually drive through fast on my way to Findlay Market.....looks like ink got out of the car and explored on foot taking pix.... @@@@ I wonder if the wood duplex is an example of the original or earliest housing in the neighborhood.....
