  1. ^ well, yes, if the GOP is the "southern" party.
  2. ...Monroe is the interchange with those two big "flea markets", Traders World & Turtle Creek, so I think they are going to be be getting that bargain hunting crowd. A good example of this in Louisville is The Mall St Matthews, which was originally called just "The Mall". It was an early Rouse Corporation design, and it had some of the same design features and graphic identity as the Salem Mall in Dayton (though it opened earlier). This mall could have went the way of the Salem Mall, but it was located in the affluent "East End" of Louisville, so it kept getting added to and improved (to the point of adding parking structures to the site).
  3. Looks like slightly over half of the pollees agree (so far).

Well, the caption says "LA Locations", so I suspect in downtown LA.

Something by Coop Himmelblau/Wolf Prix in Frankfurt? It looks like a design feature by them and the Zeil is a big shopping street in Frankfurt.
  7. I think you have this confused with the Male Box, wich was in nearly the same location, but a block to the west on Ludlow. What makes Dayton interesting at this point in history is that it's about to go the way of Detroit. You can tour neighborhoods here that are somewhat intact and come back 5 or 10 years later and they will be gone.
  8. The Enquirer did come down against the anti-streetcar/rail crowd after all. Will their editorial carry any weight.
  9. ^ But wait, theres' more!: More development ahead for Monroe outlet mall While the new outlet mall in Monroe hasn’t even opened yet, its developer is already looking at additional growth for the center. Chelsea Property Group — developer of the Cincinnati Premium Outlets — owns another 20 acres of land around the center that it is looking to fill with a mix of users. Michele Rothstein, a spokesperson with Chelsea, said the center could be surrounded by hotels, sit-down restaurants, banks, complimentary retailers or even a movie theater as development at the center along Interstate 75 continues. ...
  10. The politics of what Brown is talking about is difficult. There will be the tendancy to spend the wealth to get votes for program, which is why you dont see well-funded "ultimate solution" demonstration programs that benefit just a few Congressional districts.
  11. The NS line between Cincy & Dayton was built in the 1870s as the "Short Line" as a quicker, more direct connection between the cities. so it would seem ideal for passenger travel just due to the inherent alignment. #### Oasis Line NIMBYs: suprised they havent hooked up with COAST yet on that charter amendment since it would put the kabosh on passenger rail through their neighborhoods.
  12. I recall the "eulogies"on the GOP after Watergate, too. Rumors of demise proved greatly exgerrated!. I think they will pick up seats during the midterms as that is usually the case. If 2006 and 2008 were housecleaning elections, essentially referendums on the GOP, the seats picked up by Dems are probably competitve once the reasons for GOP unpopularity went away.
  13. Its about parochialism too. The board seemed more "statewide" (or more interest in each others cities) back in 2004 and 2005. Now the interaction is more on common topics like politics or certain transportation issues. Of course back in 2004 and 2005 there was a smaller pool of content providers, so maybe more interaction. Now, it would be possible to break off an Urban Cincinnati and an Urban Cleveland & Vicinity and each board wouldn't notice the other one was missing.
  14. What he's talking about is counteracting the cascade of negative comments on urban affairs articles at newspaper comments sites. The idea is to provide a counterooffensive against anti-urban public opinion while also challenging factual inaccuracy and spin from the reporters.

Yes, but would they ride a train to Westchester, Middletown, or Dayton?
  16. I was just using polls as an example....those online opinion polls that are sometimes put up. Freepers used to vote en-mass to skew the results. The message board thing is probaby a better example. Im just saying that this is a tactic. A good one, actually. Think of it as sort of an on-line truth squad.
  17. Freeping. This started out with the conservative political site called Free Republic, where they would "Freep" opinion polls and even message boards to push their POV, if they didnt like the politics of the poll or message board. One could do this with newpaper comment boards, too. I think it would be a good idea but it would have to be timely.
  18. The police issue re budget cuts came up in Dayton, too, and was politicized. The reality is that personell costs are a big part of municiple budgets, especially public safety. These are the where you can achieve big savings if you want to cut.

I was thinking they could do something like that with suburban high-speed rail stations to connect them to edge-city developement.

Ok, its like what they have at DFW and Atlanta.

If one wanted to select a local airport that could be connected to 3-C rail it would be Middletown since its so close to one of the 3-C ROWs. Middletown could be upgraded to provide limited regional passenter air service, similar to Gary's airport up in Chicago.

I think the two airports situation is another sign of this becoming a major metro area. Examples would be the DC/Baltimore area with three airports, and LA, with four (LAX, Ontario, Burbank, and that airport in Orange County). Cin-Day would be more like Washington/Baltimore, but without the major long distance airport in Dulles. CVG is Washington National + international flights while Dayton = Baltimore-Washington

    What airport train is that?
  24. Some gloom and doom to contradict the positive media spin on the recent unemployment numbers. From "The Street"The Real Unemloyment Rate is 14.3% And this one makes me thing of Dmkrows comments about the economy locking into a higher rate of structural unemployment: (ok, I really dont understand the second one, but it looks good)
