  3. The same thing happened with 3CDC and oddly enough, it sounds like some of the very same people. All people who are now singing 3CDC praises and are off to look for the next villain.
  4. Great idea and funny that you say that. Last night, Holly and I were discussing having Paul Sturkey choose our wine list and promote the fact it was his selection. We were going to do that because Holly's family is close friends with the Sturkey's but I much prefer to bring in an OTR/Downtown store. Let me see what I can do.
  5. John had mentioned to me that there were hang ups on trying to place hiring requirements (which can't be done by the charrette), plus an ongoing crime discussion (which can't be solved by the charrette). You may be right that I am hearing info coming out of particular groups and not the whole. Never the less, he seemed frustrated at some who saw it more as an opportunity to debate whether there should or should not be a casino rather than moving towards offering specific ideas to help shape what is now inevitable.
  6. Any suggestions of some Best Of albums? My vending company has become a bit panicky over the fact they have next to none of these in stock and requested we throw in some Best Of's for 10 or 15 albums instead of repeating artist.
  7. That was a genuine question and a much discussed topic with us as one of our partners was formally with FRCH. What came out of the charrette or didn't come out of the charrette was largely due to some still having a hang up on their personal feelings against the casino. It was described to me, by several people now, that it was tough to keep the focus on what the charrette was meant to be focused on at times due to those wondering off onto subjects that the charrette was never meant to tackle. That is not the fault of the the developer, but those who could not get beyond their own distrust and ultimate disdain for the casino itself. Tune in today at 1:00 to 700 WLW as Dan MacDonald discusses with Bill Cunningham about the casino and OTR.
  8. Dan MacDonald will be on 700 WLW with the Bill Cunningham Show at 1:00 talking about NEONS and Over the Rhine. This will go into more depth about the channel 5 piece last night about Main Street and OTR as a whole being affected in a positive way by the nearby casino.
  9. I agree that the two clothing stores had nothing to do with the casino but its better to get the mention than not. John had contacted Holly to ask about the current sales at the Q and what if any new businesses had moved into Main other than Neons and Jack Potts. Aside from all that, NEONS and Jack Potts were closely watching the casino debate. We pulled the trigger about two weeks prior to the vote and the Fries brothers came in within days of the vote. We initially contacted John London after he covered some of the Pendleton's residence reaction to the proposed casino and wanted to give the other side to their argument that it would do nothing but bring negatives to the area. This is a follow up of that October story when we didn't even realize the Fries brothers were considering the J-Hall space.
  10. I am a humble man willing to let everyone else take the credit. (but we know the truth :wink2:)
  11. Area Near Casino Site Springing Back To Life Local entrepreneurs are already placing their bets on the new casino planned for Over-The-Rhine. http://www.wlwt.com/video/22650944/index.html I disagree. The "particular interest" in the charrette was the community. This was the community input to the developer, who can take that input or not. The quality of the input is in question from this charrette due to those giving due in large part to their own unresolved issues, not those receiving it.

  13. Tonight at 5:30 and 6:00, John London of Channel 5 will be doing a story about the casino, Gateway, NEONS and Jack Potts. It should be a very positive piece about OTR.

  15. It was to some extent, but it was his recognizing the tremendous progress of OTR.
  16. Do you think it will be GBBN or FRCH?
  17. wasn't it Borgman who did the "Graydon and I moved up to OTR from Indian Hill" cartoon?
  18. I just spoke to one of my partners who was a volunteer at the event. He felt that many were getting off onto tangents that was not design focussed, ie. putting hiring requirments on the casino and still debating the casinos affect on crime. I would not lay this at the feet of the developer as to whether the charrette was constructive or not. In some ways it sounds reminiscent of how 3CDC was talked about in certain circles when they first started in OTR.
  19. Not a silly stat at all. This points to what I said above, development combined with policing is what makes for an inhospitable environment for those looking to engage in criminal activity. Boarded up buildings and empty alley ways void of any person who would ever give information to the police, let alone call something in or stop it, made for the perfect cover for these criminals. That situation has changed and we went from 500 to 4 to 0 year over year. That is progress, not silliness. Republic was, just a few short years ago, the most dangerous street in OTR. If a shooting or murder happened it was most likely Republic, second Vine, third Green. Now we have a sold out building at 12th and Republic at Mottainai. Plus Dan MacDonald is now property manager over all of Models buildings and strictly enforces residency requirements which typically takes care of issues before it becomes a policing matter. Republic is also flanked by the development of 3CDC on its east side that puts additional pressure on those wishing to stay in the shadows. When was the last murder on Republic? In fact many did. When Vortex initially came in, they helped brake the back of the open air drug trade on Vine St. Others did move but few within OTR. Avondale and even the West Side has seen a spike overall in crime relative to OTR but this is due to a more complex issue than condo developement. I will not speak for Price Hill, but Laurel Homes however was in the West End and is now City West. Did the crime rate in the West End go up after the tearing down of Laurel Homes? Absolutely not. Nor has the crime rate done anything but drop in OTR after the beginning of the development by 3CDC. The numbers just do not support your arguments nor does any objective analysis of the realities on the ground here in OTR lend to anything but vast improvement on all fronts. I am on the ground...right now. My wife sits everyday at that corner of Vine in that very office, she is there this very minute. We live on Mulberry Street. We own Neons just off Main Street. I co-captain the Mulberry/Mcmicken/Main Street Safety Sector and one of our partners, Dan MacDonald, co-captains the Washington Park Partners (Safety Sector). We see daily those realities and are aware of the progress that still is to be made as well as mindful of the progress that has been done. We have perspective that goes back years and information that helps us look years forward. Be proud of OTR's progress. We know we are not yet where we ultimately want to be, but we are still way ahead of where we ever thought we would be by this point. Just look back at the frustration of those earlier in this thread. If someone would have told them that future would look like it does today, no one would have believed them...including me.
  20. The Diner has just been tagged again.
  21. and it generally flows in the path of least resistance. All throughout OTR that is all that they are facing, not just with the police, but with eyes in the windows and people on the streets all of which provides for a very unsafe area for someone trying to commit a crime.
  22. I disagree with that assessment. Crime has dropped all over OTR, from Central to Mulberry, from Broadway to Central Pkwy. Murder rates for one are at its lowest levels in years. The drug trade of Republic is way off of what it was prior to 3CDC. The whores have always been on Elm, always have been bad on McMicken but developement has not reached that area yet. It isn't that they have been pushed up there. We have one double digit decline in part 1 and 2 crime month after month now going on year after year. There is nothing but silver linings in this cloud of development that OTR is experiencing.

I have about 50 I heart OTR stickers done in a Neon font. If you pm your address to me, I will mail one to you.
  24. I don't think it was a mistake, I proudly live in the nolibs part of OTR.
