I mean, really? I used to work at the bookstore across the street when I was in high chool. What a mess. Was this an "accident"? I believe that was a nationally registered landmark building.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Top 3 Ohio Bands: GBV/R. Pollard - far and away the best in my biased opinion Pere Ubu/Peter Laughner/Rocket From The Tombs/Mirrors/Electric Eels - pretty much the entire interrelated cleveland punk & art-punk scene. The Breeders There's tons of great Ohio bands! I would say Dayton and Cleveland have all the really top notch ones. Columbus and Cinci never had a band that really did it for me like the three above. Scott Walker also bodes a mention, a Hamilton native to boot. Devo is great. Tin Huey from Akron. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Gaunt, Scrawl from Columbus. Times New Viking is good. Too many to mention really.

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
Also had "Is She Ever" tacked on the end. Going to see GBV at the Grog Shop in Cleveland tonight! And the live version from a single b-side with a funny Bob Pollard intro.

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
jp340803 replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentSidebar in the Oregon District has not been paying it's employees for months. I have several friends who worked their until recently, and for months have bounced paychecks from the restaurant. A total shame because it was a great restaurant, great food and excellent service. The owner Brian Higgins, however, is a total crook in my opinion. He's also accusing a good friend of mine of stealing thousands of dollars, while he is the one not paying employees consistently. This has been stewing for months behind closed doors. Watch some of the videos below, particularly the Dayton Informer link: http://www.fox45now.com/shared/news/top-stories/stories/wrgt_vid_7919.shtml http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/news/local/current-former-employees-protest-oregon-district-r/nP592/ http://daytoninformer.com/?p=220430 So, don't go to Sidebar if your in Dayton, or the Columbus location for that matter.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Agreed. We should pick a GBV song for State Rock Song, like Oklahoma did with "Do You Realize" by the Flaming Lips. What to pick, what to pick... How's My Drinking? Weed King I am Scientist - a more serious suggestion

Favorite Music At The Moment?
July is Guided by Voices month in Dayton, OH: Here's the mayor (Gary Leitzell) introducing the band at a secret/private show at Dayton's Canal St. Tavern. Some profanity on this, so be aware if kids/coworkers are around. Guided By Voices Month Announcement People came from all over the country, as well as Norway, Sweden, U.K, Switzerland, and Australia. Fun time had by all! Still recovering!

Dayton: Historic Photos
Wonderful. I got the issues (some of them) when they were new. The ones from the 60's may have come through my aunt, who worked at the ad agency Oppenheim Herminghausen Clarke. She knew I loved this stuff and had a lot of sources. The Dragon's Lair used to be good for this, too. I'm glad he's still working. As soon as I can, I'll uncover my two missing Dayton USA's. I do have a nice bicentennial celebration issue, which was unusually colorful. Did he do that one? If you scan them, post or email them to me I could tell you almost immediately. He has a pretty distinct style. Not sure if he signed all of them or not, or if any signature would be cropped out. If they are signed it would W. Patterson or Patterson, and then usually the date like '53 or '61. He still signs and dates the same way; name then date.

Wow. I have a few vintage issues, and I even have the one which, amazingly, uses that very artwork ("Restless Horizons"). He did nice work! Thanks! Do you find the magazine online, or just pick them up wherever you find them? Bonnett's in the Oregon district might have some, but not the last time I checked. There is one issue hanging up in the Hastee Tastee pancake house on Linden which shows the wright brothers and some airplanes.. I was eating there one morning, looking at it and thought it was very familiar. The one on the record cover was the illustration from the first issue, and my uncle has the original hanging in his house. Ink and gauche it looks like. He's in his late 80's but still draws and paints, and works on projects for friends. He owned a graphics business in Dayton from the 50's to the late 90's. They had a big studio for a while, fun place to hang around as a kid. Lots of cameras, artwork and things to get into...

Thanks. I'm trying to find the "Dayton USA" magazine from 1964 which shows this. How did you find that out? The guest room ceilings and floors were Flexicore, if I'm not mistaken - probably resting on the slabs. My grandpa did a lot of the cover illustrations for Dayton USA magazine. Would like to track some of those down, but haven't had much luck so far. He probably has all the original illustrations somewhere still. This one was one of the magazine covers, and the people who put out this record used the illustration and didn't pay him for it. :) Found the record at Omega Music and bought it though. It is worth a pretty good amount, it's a collectable rare garage rock LP.

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
jp340803 replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentTrue about Ohio Coffee. I hope they can take advantage of this and build their clientele. I like the lunches and the coffee there. The Captian Picard, an Earl Grey tea Steamer, is good. I heard this closing was not all Dr. Irvin's doing. A big part of it was the owners of Paccia couldn't make the restaurant profitable, while the coffee shop was doing well. They wanted to put in something akin to a sports bar, which Dr. I didn't want, so he pulled the plug. It would suck to a have a ripoff BW3s in that space, but doesn't make it any easier for the employees that were laid off. And all the information I've gotten is 3rd hand, so we might be playing the telephone game here.

Dayton: Gem City Records to close
Sucks for Gem City. I did fill in some holes in my Bob Pollard vinyl collection at their sale, mostly stuff I got on CD over the years there. Only about 100+ vinyl pieces to go! Got some rare GBV/Bob records there over the years. I really liked the employees there, always very nice and helpful. Once they were bought out a few years ago, and all that crap merch filled the store I wondered how long they would be around. I know alot of vinyl collectors in Dayton, but I don't think we number enough to serve a niche business like a record store. Columbus, being larger and younger, has a several great records store.

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
jp340803 replied to New Orleans Lady's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI saw that and it was really disappointing. My friend works there; he's in a bad spot right now. Zero notice for a lay off? I read that it was the "savior" of downtown/Oregon Dr. Irvin who booted Paccia for a new tenant in what is his building since 2008. He was talking about an urban renaissance. WTF? By kicking out a seemingly bustling coffee shop? As always with Dayton, these deal are done behind closed doors and everyone else is left out in the cold. 3 businesses in the Oregon have closed recently. Gem City Records, Jazzy Java and now Paccia. Backsliding? I've heard Gem City and Paccia already have new tenants lined up though. If they put a Starbucks down there I'm going to be so pissed. I doubt that since Paccia had a liquor license, which is very valuable down there. The only bright spot is that it might benefit Ohio Coffee Company on 5th and Ludlow.

Statewide: Issue 2 - Livestock Care Standards
A friend of mine who is a strong animal rights activist posted on her Facebook to support Issue 2. I sent her some Humane Society links and she was pretty upset. Apparently she had gotten some information from PETA that said to support 2. Strange. Very interesting how this was marketed to the electorate. Maybe not complete misinformation, but packaged very well to appear pro-animal rights.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
The DDN is a lot better than its readers. The paper did an excellent series of articles this Sunday on the housing crisis here. The comments are probably representative of the type of people who live in the area (both city and suburbs) and the anti-urban negatvity expressed is probably why Dayton is an unusually sucky place for a city its size. I don't think it's entirely sucky, but I haven't lived many other places. Dayton is very frustrating at times, no doubt. I really hope this rail program gets off to a good start without to much local juggling and bickering. Those housing articles were good. Kudos to DDN there. I might borrow that term sometime.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Yeah, I hate those. Makes the city seem so trashy and full of morons (which may be true!!). I think alot of people that post anti-urban, at least on the DDN articles, are not from the city or Montgomery County. Gives a terrible impression of the city as a crime-ridden hell hole, which it's not. I really wish these were linked off the article page. I've argued with people on there, but there's no point. The DDN has turned into something of a rag.

I like the location for this. I hope the station they build fits the area. Should spur some development downtown as well. This is one block from The Arcade. Edit: It's two blocks from the Arcade block.
