I can think of two things that would bring people back to Hamilton Co. in a hurry: crushing gas prices and oppressive home interest rates, so that people could only afford cheaper houses and less driving. But of course there are better ways to slow sprawl, like excellent transit and a strong core. Both of which require a public mindset I'm not sure exists around here.
  2. mark, I'm not a purchaser but I've been watching the goings-on at the Graydon site for several months (I can see it out my office window). It's starting to look like they're down to the finish work. Am I right? I'd love to see what those places look like.
  3. Great article about a great trend. I'm jealous!

I saw that article too... I can't stand that guy. Most of the fuck-ups in human history are due to people who don't know the meaning of "happy medium."
  5. I'd like to see an interchange at MLK and I-71. It gets very congested on the streets of Corryville and Clifton with people from UC and the hospitals all trying to get on the highway from Taft.
  6. Wow, they are spending some serious money on that campus. They're just finishing up an expansion they started last year.
  7. It's not difficult to get uptown if you don't have to use the interstate to get there.
  8. sprawl-tastic!
  9. I agree with your historical analysis, Magyar. I think that history has worked its way into the subconscious of the population, which is unfortunate for transit.

More positive filming in Cincinnati is good news. The Mercantile Library is very cool inside. I also heard that an anti-smoking commercial was being filmed in the B/G restaurant on 9th and Main downtown a couple weeks ago.
  11. Cincinnati is one of the first cities in the country to have widely available powerline internet access. They did a trial in Hyde Park a year or two ago and are now starting to roll it out into other parts of town. I've heard about those promised speeds, too. Just curious, how much are they charging?
  12. Hmm, $95 one-way to Cleveland seems a little steep. Maybe they can find some funding to bring that down a bit. That said, I can't wait to have the option!
  13. Yeah, widening.... how about a healthy, balanced diet of widening and transit. I'm still stuck on a question posed a couple weeks ago by a forumer: "Why do we fund roads but subsidize transit? Roads are never expected to make a profit, so why is transit?"

I recently got married (Oct. 16th) and we went to San Francisco and Sonoma/Napa valleys on our honeymoon. Here are a few pictures (don't worry, it's all PG) :) Sorry, I didn't take that many pics. Chinatown: North Beach: Steep residential street: Alcatraz: North Beach/Nob Hill from Coit Tower: Nob Hill: Union Square (a lot like Fountain Square, except with better materials and no monolithic skyscraper overshadowing it): Downtown shopping area: Across the bay: Muir Woods: V. Sattui winery, Napa valley: Viansa winery, Sonoma valley: Scotland...or Point Reyes National Seashore?
  15. Holy IKEA fanaticism! IKEA is throw-away crap. Go to a real furniture store, like Abode in Covington. But I admit, it is cheap and allows you to stay abreast of trends without breaking the bank.
  16. Well this one just made a big leap back to the forefront. On the Channel 5 news this evening they had a nearly 3-4 minute "exclusive" look and announcement of the Millworks project, including an on-air look at the model above. The reporter claimed the developer hopes to have 45 acres of the project done by summer 2006. They also mentioned that the connector is still part of the plan. The reporter was hyping it up pretty good, saying it would "dwarf" the Levee and would bring lots of retail not found anywhere else in the area. The developer also said it wouldn't compete with Rookwood...
  17. I've been expecting an increase in bus fares for a while, considering they are quite low compared to similar cities/systems. Instead of $1 or $1.25, they should set the base fare to .80-90 (which is now the rush hour fare) and the rush hour fare to $1.

    I hate that guy.
  19. I wonder if this has been the case in New York, D.C., Chicago, Boston, Toronto, the Bay Area, or anywhere else with a good transit system? Or just the fear of xenophobic security moms and dads? I mean, the bus fare is cheaper than any light rail would be and those run all the way out to Mason, West Chester and everywhere in between. If it's actual crime they're worried about, the argument is complete BS. Who's going to rob a person, car, or whatever and then go wait for the bus/train for 10 minutes?? You gotta get away! But I know what they're really worried about is loitering, to which I have two replies: Who's going to pay $2 each way to loiter with absolutely no purpose?, and If you're worried about loitering at the mall, etc. there are other ways to address that if it becomes a problem (fights, obstructing store entrances, etc.) To block light rail for this reason is nonsensical.

Neither do I, but then again I don't get to the suburbs where most of the people susceptible to voting for Bush live. Long live the city.
  21. I view this as a great example of productive, appropriate infill in a city neighborhood. Can't wait to see how it looks!
  22. About time for some daring architecture in this town. If completed according to plan this could be a landmark on the national level.
  23. The views are there are pretty great. I don't think i'd get any work done if I had a window office.
  24. I guess Reagan highway wasn't enough.
