Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
That headline in the Enquirer or Post the other day that characterized Ovation as a response to the Banks made me want to puke. That is most certainly not the motivation that Newport leaders have had in mind. They wanted to make better use of their prime riverfront parcel, that's all. I swear the fishwraps in this town read like second-rate tabloids some times.

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
An earlier article on this subject mentioned the new owners were looking at locating downtown. I hope that is still the case.

Cincinnati: Evanston: Development and News
I agree, if they have to build office space there, the new rendering does look a lot better than the original. At least now they are a little more vertical and not identical.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
I think the 200% increase in night and weekend cost is a bigger deal than others, apparently. Lawyers use a phrase called "de minimis." It means "so small it doesn't matter." $1 parking is de minimis. Someone considering going downtown is going to think nothing of paying that to park. $3 is not de minimis for most people. Besides, it's not a matter of affordability, it's a matter of whether someone subconsciously considers downtown parking cheap or expensive, which will influence their decision to come downtown for dinner or go to Rookwood, where they can park for free.

Newport, KY: Ovation
A 3,000-seat Vegas-style performance space? What on earth are they going to show there?

Cincinnati: Mt. Auburn: Development and News
Construction is complete and my brother in law and his wife moved in on Wed. Doug Spitz was the builder and the house turned out great. I took a few pictures of the house I was going to post, but my wife left for Vegas today with the camera before I could upload them. It looks awesome from the outside. I would be very interested to know what their construction cost per square foot was.

Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
The CAC is amazing and an incredible asset to Cincinnati. If you haven't been in the last few months, make a trip down there this weekend. The exhibits change every couple months.

If you live on Riddle Road down by McMicken, then you live in University Heights, the "U" in CUF.

Newport, KY: Ovation
I hope that is just a lame stock rendering of some kind. That plan is awful, just awful. Those ugly massive towers surrounded by no mans land, a circular shape that has no relationship to the site. I hope the final product looks nothing like this.

Information for Cincy Re-lo's
Cincinnati Sports League is alive and well. I would suggest picking up a free weekly and taking a look at the events calendar. Recurring events like One World Wednesday and the Bacchanalian Society are packed with single people 25-35.

Cincinnati: Urban Grocery Stores
I usually shop at the Corryville Kroger, which you could access on the #78 or #24 bus. But since the 17-18-19 run more frequently, that might be the better option for going to IGA. I occasionally use the Vine St. Kroger in OTR, but in addition to having to carry your groceries 6+ blocks, you have to run a gauntlet of (mostly harmless) bums and thugs for two of those blocks. But once inside, you should be able to find most of the basics, and it's quite a bit cheaper than IGA.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
If you look at the renderings that 3CDC provided, they show the screen fitting into the "notch" on the top of Macy's facade. Instead, the thing is raised up one more story with big gray steel supports. It looks small from the ground, I couldn't imagine trying to watch a sporting event on it.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
I wouldn't say that Newport has a suburban feel. The only reason it's not part of Cincinnati is that it's in another state. So while technically it's a suburb, it's disingenuous to say that you're "in the suburbs" when you're in Newport.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
Well, we have evening and weekend $1 parking now, in at least two garages and we used to have it at Fountain Square. Street parking can be very tight, especially with an event going on. My point is that $1 parking makes people who are on the fence about coming downtown (who are accustomed to paying $0 to park) think "wow, that's cheaper than I thought," whereas $3 parking does not.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
Did anybody notice the new Fountain Square garage parking rates? 1 hr - $1 2 hrs - $3 Nights and weekends - $3 flat rate. So much for cheap parking downtown.

Debt Collectors Out of Line
If the statements described in this article are true, then this NES company has committed blatant violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The debtors would be entitled to at least $1,000 damages plus their attorneys fees.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Yikes. These Christian zealots drive me nuts. Now the scientific community is dogmatic ("inclined to lay down principles as incontrovertibly true")? Wasn't Darwin ostracized for advancing a theory that controvened established Christian dogma? Research papers published in all reputable journals undergo rigorous peer review. The entire scientific research community is geared toward stamping out dogma. Ridiculous. And it's not that real scientists want to stifle discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of evolutionary theory, not at all. They just want to present the established consensus of the scientific community to school children. Just like in every other subject, we try to give our students a basic understanding of the current state of knowledge that they can build upon as they see fit. What the quote above really means is that scientists want to stifle discussion of "intelligent design." Which of course they do, at least in science class. To have creationism masquerading as real science in science class using a fancy veneer of circular logic hides the fact that the sole support for the "theory" comes from religious tracts. It is not science, so it does not belong in a science curriculum.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Party at the Point Photos Taken 8/23/06
Those are London Plane trees. They do get very large with age and appropriate soil conditions. You wouldn't see them in the forest, though, because they are actually a hybrid of the American sycamore and another species. You will find often find sycamores in forest stands, near rivers and lakes.

Cincinnati: Downtown - Government Square
There was actually a protester out for the open house the Friday before it opened. Her sign said something about using the money for schools instead. If you're going to stand out there, at least be informed. As you said, only $1.8 million was paid by the city. Not to mention that the school board and city are completely separate entities, and a billion is already being spent on a massive capital improvement project for the schools.
