Critics Say Mallory Focused On Wrong Neighborhoods UPDATED: 6:19 pm EST February 19, 2009 CINCINNATI -- As jobs are lost, help is on the way. Mayor Mark Mallory will meet Friday with President Barack Obama to help direct billions of dollars from the stimulus package to the Tri-state area. Mallory said his meeting was vital for the local economy, but one of his critics said the mayor was placing a priority on the wrong projects. The mayor has said he'd like to spend money to help widen sidewalks and bury utility lines in Mount Adams, but neighborhoods such as Walnut Hills have been left off the drawing board. "We need the revitalization of Peebles Corner," said Chris Smitherman, local chapter president of the NAACP. "Mount Auburn needs resources desperately, Bond Hill, Evanston (and) Roselawn. These are communities that City Council and the mayor have been underinvesting in." Smitherman said it would be foolhardy to pursue $12 million for a streetcar proposal that could then be derailed in November by voters. But Mallory has so far declined to modify his wish list, and he said he knew what he would ask the president. "How is that money actually going to be allocated, how will it be prioritized and how will it move to the cities?" Mallory said he would ask. Sen. Sherrod Brown provided a possible answer to some of those questions, saying that the money would be allocated quickly – possibly within days. "There's already been a project in Missouri started," Brown said. "They're moving it as fast as the governors can get it moving." Officials hope to bring $300 million and 4,000 jobs to the Cincinnati area, but they warned that much could happen to change either number http://www.wlwt.com/money/18753338/detail.html

A nice story to share. A friend of my wife's came to Cincinnati from Germany with her new husband to stay for a week. He originally did not want to come to the U.S. and "waste his time here". His new wife insisted they go to NY and then cincinnati for their honeymoon. His buddy's in Germany said "your going where??? Cincinnati? why?? Anyway to make a long story short, I was happy to show him Over the Rhine and we drank alot of beer at Grammers, along with doing the usual everyday OTR routine, you know, Findlay Market, shadeau bread, Park and Vine etc. When I mentioned we might have streetcars linking the neighborhoods again he was totally blown away, he absolutley loved the basin area and the people here. He may try and make it to Oktoberfest next year. He uses the streetcar everyday in Bremen, and had nothing but good things to say about it.

jason haag's entire existance as a blogger is powered by coal. I wonder how much C02 is released from the burning of coal due to running his servers 24/7?? Luckily his site is only frequented by locals for a laugh. Hell... he just made me burn coal by logging on here to comment.. :x The more time he writes negativley about the city, the more mountains are hacked up. Keep up the good work!

Again, Biofuels are just a feel good measure. Biodiesel increases NOx emissions and leads to more smog, has a higher cost than regular diesel, the environmental costs of course or not included in the market place. Also it will compete(already is) with growing food on cropland, loss and degradation of biodiversity from crop plantations, and does not work in larger formulations during the cold months. Renewables are the answer. (to eventually power streetcar) Tht's awesome! I doubt even Jungle Jim would buy one of those! :-D

Forget that, Haag is anti-coal remember? My son and I were just watching some Japanese train videos. Sometimes I just feel like giving up on this city and moving back to a country that embraces rail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7CPiApzLJw

I listened to the Bearcat broadcast.. The first 15 minutes were a total waste of time. Haag was lecturing about where electricity comes from to an urban sustainabilty forum.. friggin hilarious.. Thanks for wasting our time! Good job Mr Schneider.

My son and I ride the bus all the time usually the #1,#4, or #27, it's not much fun but it gets us to where we need to go. One thing is for sure, Children(and some grown up kids) have a fascination with trains and anything on rails. Can you imagine all the kids that will nag their suburban-exburban parents to go downtown and ride the streetcar? Thomas the Train may recruit our children to one day get us on rails again.. More power to Thomas!

Dean, I am probably as anti-coal (maybe more don't know??) than you. I am also a conservationist, preservationist and sustainabilty proponet. I have question. 1) If the streetcar were powered by (what %) renewables Today would you support it? Yes, we do get coal from mountaintop removal, we should all demand that Duke stops buying from coal companies that use this environmentally degrading method of coal removal or at least use full cost pricing when this type is used. http://www.ilovemountains.org/myconnection/show_connection.php?zip=45202 Cincinnati can lead the way in making a difference for the environment especially due to our close proximity to the coal industry. Supporting more environmentally friendly modes of transportation and energy will attract more people with this same mindset to our city and we can change our car culture here for good!

That was a large southbank bus. My wife, Son and I were almost run over at race & 6th a week earlier. The Bus had to back up after it went too fast around the corner to try and outrun us in the crosswalk.

I'm pretty sure a 100 million dollar streetcar system route would have priority and have it's own force for streetcleaning and snow removal than a typical bus route would.

If the cincinnati streetcar ever got stuck, I would gladly walk over to it and help shovel it out. I may even contibute some brine. I would never help out a bus like that. That's what is so great about streetcars, they are so lovable.

"We could run a bio-fuel trolley" <---from the beacons blog. The Dean needs a little education. Yea, that's a great idea.. Bio-diesel results in increased levels of harmful nitrogen oxide and other pollutants. What does he expect to run the "trolley" in the winter months? I was unable to run my biodiesel powered VW with concentrations of more than B-20 in the winter, and even that was pushing it. (80% diesel 20% biodiesel) Then you end up converting more land to produce soybeans and corn for ethanol which reduces forests, promotes monoculture and less diversity, and grain prices rise, food becomes more expensive in hungry nations, increased pollution from fertilizers. List goes on and on.

How is this different than Cunnigham? Quoted from the Deans website "Most frequently, those who search the internet become confused when they stumble upon The Dean of Cincinnati (or web pages that refer to The Dean). This character is an example of political performance art, and I publish articles as a hobby".

The so called Green Party is an absolute joke here. Eventually the streetcar could be powered by renewable resources such as Wind, biomass, hydro, or carbon credits could be used. Doesn't anybody think about long term? Haap is just a bill cunnigham in a plaid shirt.

City Council Goes Over Stimulus Wish List Projects Reported by: Bill Price Email: [email protected] City Creating 'Wish List' For Fed Stimulus Money Efforts are picking up steam to make sure Cincinnati and the entire Tri-State speak with a single voice on how billions of dollars in federal economic recovery money are used. Last month, Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory submitted over $332 million in spending requests to Ohio Senators and Representatives. The city's "wish list" as some are calling it shows how Cincinnati wants to spend its porton of the almost $9 billion in economic recovery money. Just before Noon on Monday, the Cincinnati City Council Rules and Governing Committee started going over the list to make sure it's the best possible list of job-creating and city improving projects possible. Council members heard from representatives of City Manager Milton Dohoney who told the committee that the manager's top priority is getting the list to congressional representatives and federal officials. Officials say that would make sure Cincinnati voices will be heard on how the economic stimulus money should be spent. Among the top priorities mentioned by some council members was bigger appropriations for a new Brent Spence Bridge. The proposed $1 billion replacement bridge for interstate 71 and 75 is considered a vital regional lifeline that would create jobs and help the region's economy. Council members also say more federal funding help for the proposed Cincinnati streetcar line from Downtown to Over-the-Rhine and Corryville, would be an good job generator with long-term benefits as well. Cincinnati Council Member Jeff Berding tells 9News, "That's one of the reasons I'm holding this hearing today. We've got to make sure this is a good list that follows the president's and congress' priorities. We need to work together to maximize the opportunity for Cincinnati to be included in the stimulus package." But this won't be the only meeting on a Tri-State wish list for an economic stimulus package. A Monday afternoon session is expected to bring together some city leaders with some of the Hamilton County Commissioners to hammer out regional priorities. The whole idea is that if the Tri-State can speak with a single voice on the most important projects, that could increase their chances of actually getting federal funding. http://www.wcpo.com/content/financialsurvival/yourlocalstories/story/City-Council-Goes-Over-Stimulus-Wish-List-Projects/CjZ_Ddvg6kCFXLMTw2ncFw.cspx
