  1. This is a downer: NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Nov. 28, 2005 Construction Site Accident Causes One Fatality, One Injury An accident on the construction site of a Cleveland State University parking facility this morning claimed the life of one worker and injured another. Both men worked for Martin Excavating, a subcontractor of general contractor Thomarios of Akron that is responsible for the overall project. One man was pronounced dead at the scene; the other was taken to St. Vincent Charity Hospital. The accident is under investigation by the Cleveland Police Department, federal OSHA, and the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office. OSHA has cleared the site, allowing for work to progress. “This was a tragic accident,” said President Michael Schwartz. “Our hearts go out to the deceased, the injured and their families.” The accident occurred at the site of a five-story, 400-space parking garage at East 25th Street and Chester Avenue, just north of Mather Mansion
  2. plus, the more the community takes ownership, both in the community and in its own housing, the more the crime rate will drop.
  3. I love the idea of sharing this right-of-way...if the corridor is to have the potential for jobs and housing that it claims to posess, the more multimodal we are, the better! Anyone who's ever ridden the east-side rail lines has seen the route that these three lines run and how useless it is for a large part of that trip. It would be amazing to link up a realignment to this project. And if it could bring in more funding, that makes it even more attractive! One problem, though, is that there are already a few big capital projects in the works for stations on the Red Line along this route. Given that this project is about a decade off, this wouldn't be a total waste of money, but I'm curious to see what kind of effect this proposal would have on these investments.
  4. Wow, that's great! I'd never seen that site. Maybe it's because they spell Asbury Towers as Ashbury Towers. I'll assume that the latter is the correct one, since that's what the developer's website has! The development looks great from above, but I'd like to see more of the elevations, designs, etc. I would also like to amend my earlier statement about the desireability of this part of town... My only experience with Stockyards was in a part of the neighborhood that really represented the name...rendering plants and what not really gave it a putrid air...but the 'hood is a little more expansive than what I'd imagined and has more going for it than I'd previously understood! This should be a great asset and another example of a brownfield redevelopment in Cleveland adding up to a larger residential population and more home ownership!

  7. I drove by this site on I-90 this weekend en-route to Thanksgiving festivities...There's a big sign up on one of the older structures that announces the project and there's visible construction on some of the side streets. The main grouping of land and the watertower look to be next, but who knows when that will be in their 5-year phasing plan? Seriously...who knows? If anyone does, please share!

Seriously, Deech, you only need to spend a little time on this site to get a taste for the energy that is bubbling throughout Clevelanders right now. And the attitude you put forward is symptomatic of the attitude that far too many Clevelanders share with you. The constant pessimism and defeatist "loser" mentality are part of why the PD and others have started to invest in campaigns like "Believe in Cleveland." The other part is that there are truly countless reasons for us to believe in Cleveland. I've found people like the ones quoted in the above article in abundance since moving back to Cleveland (4 months ago). And when I shared my decision with my friends in New York (where I'd been living), there were many that expressed their own desire to do the same...move back home...to Cleveland, Minneapolis, Albany, etc. Sure, cities like NYC and Chicago have things that you'll never find in Cleveland. But the same is most definitely true in reverse. And it seems that there are more people every day realizing that this is one of Cleveland's strengths, not weaknesses. We are a unique city with a unique history and a unique set of circumstances and citizenry. That's why I came back here...to build on these things and to help make Cleveland the best version of itself that it can be!
  9. This is just the surface of this sort of finding as it relates to the FC site...their estimates should prove to be very low and the complexities of their site (shape, size, location) should add up to the current site being chosen...I seriously don't understand how FC's option has lasted this long!
  10. yeah, that's what I heard... I just forgot about the "Y" thing. It really covers some critical areas, but will be no simple feat!
  11. I have my contacts! It was just a casual conversation about what Stark was looking into. It may have just been something that was mentioned at a random point in time, but I think the theme is there...collaboration across the range of property owners towards a common vision and plan of action for development. If he's trying to acquire all this property, more power to him, but this may just take forever! I don't actually know which one would be easier...buying up all the property yourself or bringing all the various land owners and developers to the same table to talk about mutually beneficial development...
  12. Well, as positive as this makes local efforts sound, it does indicate yet another constraint that we have do deal with that is handed down from our friends in Columbus. I understand that codes such as these are in place for the protection of lives and the prevention of disaster, but as the article mentions, some of them are just ridiculous. It's a positive sign, though, that Joe Cimperman is working diligently at this in his own neighborhood...and that he's on board with Frank Jackson...
  13. oh, Stark has a lot of potential to make amends for that... I just hope he's not looked at by Downtown property owners and developers as too much of a "dreamer." From what I understand, the collaboration of all these people, from Forest City's Scranton Peninsula to the Port Authority, is what Stark is working towards. I don't think he's trying to acquire all the property or to be the sole developer. I think he's shooting for more of a development master plan from the private sector. These are my words, but this is generally what I'm hearing...
  14. This is going to hurt: Empty Charter One offices hit market By STAN BULLARD 6:00 am, November 21, 2005 The downtown Cleveland office market this week took its hit from the job cuts and office moves that resulted from Charter One Bank's merger with Citizens Bank. John Glasstetter, a CB Richard Ellis vice president, has started marketing for sublease a total of 182,569 square feet in the Erieview Plaza and IMG Center buildings. Much of the space was renovated since 2000 as the bank expanded. The move hikes by 44% the volume of sublease space available in the city center. From Tuesday's Crain's Cleveland Business on the Web

From Tuesday's Crain's Cleveland Business on the Web Ohio exports to China grow By BRANDON GLENN 8:31 am, November 22, 2005 Ohio’s exports to China grew by 50% last year, a far faster rate than the United States as a whole. Ohio companies sent $964 million of goods to China last year, up from $644 million in the previous year, according to data from the Department of Commerce. “It’s just having the right products for what China is requiring,” said Richard DeKaser, chief economist for National City Corp. China is continuing to expand its industrial manufacturing capacity, and many Ohio companies supply the goods the country needs to do that, he said.
  16. There are more units on the Detroit-Superior Bridge-side that are showing signs of life. It's exciting to see more lights on as I come home across this bridge at night! Still waiting for the same effect over at Pinnacle...
  17. You mean Pleurisy? "An inflammation of the pleura, usually occurring as a complication of a disease such as pneumonia, accompanied by accumulation of fluid in the pleural cavity, chills, fever, and painful breathing and coughing." I never heard about that! That would be a big problem if it proves to be an issue throughout the building!
  18. That would be my basic assumption too. It would be a much more substantial and impactful project if it incorporated a West 25th Street frontage, but I'm not sure how I feel about displacing those businesses, or how much more complicated this would make the project.

  20. Welcome to the forum! I think you'll find that most of us here share your enthusiasm and optimistic outlook for Cleveland. According to the two articles on Rosewood on this thread, the developer is North Coast Capital Partners LLC.

I was wondering when you'd get into the conversation! Yeah, "for lease," that's what I figured... As for what's going on there now versus what's planned, I can't figure out what money has been spent already and how this would relate to the master plan. My assumption is that the building is functional as it is, but that it is under-producing. So, they have this $70 million plan to rehab the building and reposition it as a mixed-use residential, industrial, commercial, retail development. As it is right now, it seems to be singular in use, or industrial/commercial at best. If this was paying all the bills, they'd probably just stick with this. I figure that there's probably a lot of vacancy in the buildings and that they're thinking they can create a more fruitful product by diversifying the uses. Let us know if you've got more info!

I swear I'll be more attentive once classes are over in four weeks! But maybe I'll need a tension breaker somewhere in there where I can turn to this for fun and relaxation!

Yeah, not sure where that name came from. I don't have any of the images from St. Clair-Superior, but I have photos from the site that I took in August. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to pilfer any of the plans that they brought!
